Who here watches the show Avatar: Last Airbender? Is it not an excellent, excellent show? I totally condemn anyone who says it is not.

An overly obvious pun on the show:

"Avatar: The last Forumbender"

It's a cartoon about an extremely powerful kid who saves the world and fights villains using a system of martial arts. There are lots of very interesting backdrop locations and settings, which I find to be one of the best parts of the show, besides the storyline and animation quality. The new episodes are getting better and better.

I saw an episode, and I watched a second one on one of the other Nick channels I get (Digital Cable FTW!) while I was falling asleep, but i fell asleep far faster than usual and slept for about 16 hours.

I've watched a few episodes here and there, I actually like it (just odn't have the time to follow it properly). I think the animation is first rate espeically since I am in no way a fan of that CG crap a lot of animations are moving towards. The story itself, I think it has originality, good structure and simply fine writting. The kind of writting that keeps you interested and wating more with each passing episode. I think their use of Asian culture is perfect for the enviroment they have created and all in all I would suggest to anyone to at least watch an episode or two.

My only problem is their idiotic names for the nations. The Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom, for God's sake!

They found peace in it's simplicity though you know perhaps a little more thought would have been nice in that area.

Lol I hope it wasn't the show that put you to sleep. The best way to watch the show is to start from the begginning and watch all the episodes in order because the character development is quite fascinating over the course of the season.

I actually like their names for the nations, the names are simple and accessible!

And I agree with NRE, the setting of the setting is one of the best parts of the show, the way they made this mishmash of Asian cultures is totally entertaining and fascinating.

TC: No, it wasn't the show that put me asleep. The episode I watched earlier was very good. I fell asleep because the previous night I had been up till about 4:30 doing math homework, and then slept from 5:30-8:00. I wasn't able to nap during the day, so as a result by that evening/night, I was exhausted. I wanted to sleep but also wanted to watch the show, so I tried to watch it as I was falling asleep, which usually works for me since I tend to take a while to fall asleep. That night, it was different.

After a long hiatus from the show I finally got around to watching the final episodes that I hadn't watched yet, including the epic 4-part broadcast finale. What a majestic world and worldview that the creators of Avatar have distilled for our viewing pleasure!

Wow this is old.

I actually caught a couple of episodes of Avatar last time I was State-side. Not that we don't get it here, I just don't get Nick Toons (well... I don't on the Sky or the Freeview... maybe it's on mum's cable...).

For a kids cartoon it seemed ok. He was fighting a firebender (or whatever the equivalent is for fire) and it was reasonably entertaining.

While the show is obviously different to Dragonball Z, I feel that they're close enough to make a comparison.

Avatar is [this generation's/the poor man's] Dragonball Z.
Much as old Battlestar Gallactica was the poor man's StarTrek.

The two shows are different, so it's not a totally fair comparison, but they're not so different to make a comparison invalid.

This, of course, being my impression from two episodes and a theme park ride some time ago.

I was never able to get into Dragon Ball Z, Cowboy Bebop, etc. The difference imo is that DBZ and other such shows are made by Japanese people while Avatar was made by Americans so Avatar was easier for an American television viewer like myself to relate to.

I dunno, Bebop was basically cowboys in space so it wasn't that bad to get into of course I can never catch the series from beginning to end so the show for me has always been one random episode after another but still entertaining enough.

But since we're on the topic of animated television do today's cartoons bother anyone else besides myself? Maybe I've just gone from child to adult and now see what my parents saw in Ren and Stimpy that I did not but today's animation for children just seem dry, un-evolved and lacking almost completely of any great depth of story not to mention greatly bordering what I personally would consider appropriate for youth.

Grant it I don't image that most kids animated shows should be Shakespeare but it just seems like when I was a kid the TV shows I watched were more appropriate for me, had better stories, and allow me to remain a kid for as long as that lasts. Certainly seemed better than what my niece and nephew are watching now.

You've got to be kidding, right? I mean, the PC police have made it all but impossible to put ANYTHING on TV for children because it might warp their little minds! Yet I grew up on Bugs Bunny (the good ones) and Tom and Jerry and Woody Woodpecker, and "Moose and Squirrel" and Beany and Cicil (a classic) and Tom Terrific (very spooky) and the Real Three Stooges, not the stupid cartoon! We had violence, war, fights, things blowing up that they wouldn't dare show in your generation! Yes, we are training the next generation to be more wimpy than your generation, if that is possible!

- Anime
- Countries bearing elemental names
- Ninjas
- Elemental powers (?)

Definitely, it seems more similar to Naruto than DragonBall Z... Has someone seen both shows?
