327 AD.
Gaul.

Dear Captain Hilaris of the Roman Navy,

I hope you and my daughter, Miranda, have been doing well. I send you both my best. I have a favor to ask of you, Hilaris.

You may or may not know this, but the Welsh bastards here in Gaul-they're rebelling. My Legionaires have had quiete a difficult time dispatching of these rebels. They've taken naval positions and are causing quite a headache.

I'd like to request that you bring a few of your ships in to help me deal with this threat, Hilaris. I would be eternally greatful.

-Governor of Gaul, Paul Quaon

OOC: This is about 200 years before the establishment of the nation of Quaon by Shilom and Chiom Quaon.

Note also that the subdivisions of the Prefectures, that is the Dioceses, are further divided into individual provinces. I know a decent bit about the period and would offer help to anybody who needs it.

Ok, thanks. And I refer of course to modern day Britain when I say Gaul.

Well, that would be generally referred to as Britannia, i.e. Britain, though all Celtic people are Gauls, Britons would be a more specific reference.

Well, honestly, I think you've complicated it, because most people think "France" when they hear the word Gaul. Also, Wales is derived from a Germanic word used to refer to the Romanized non-Germanic inhabitants of various places, cognate Wallachia, Walloon in other parts of Europe.

Oh, whatever, I like the name Gaul better, and also, English is a germanic language. Let me just refer to it as Whales, it's easier.

OOC:
Sure refer to it as you like. But though English is a Germanic language, that would still be a non-Roman reference.

EDIT: Really sorry for taking this thread off topic; if you want I can remove all this. Any further etymnological discussion can take place in pm or another thread.

OOC: Heh, technically the Welsh are in Britannia, right? I lived not that far from Wales lol. The story still works with Gaul, bit since its the Welsh, lets assume Q meant Britannia.
IC:

Kydonia, Crete

Captain Vicius Hilaris of the Imperial Navy left the Ampitheatre somewhat disapppointed. The Fights had certainly not been much. He was a tough, hard-bitten career sailor of twenty-five. He had the close-cropped hair of a soldier, and always wore his leather cuirass, even on hot Mediterranean days like this. He hadn't seen as much combat as one might expect, but then again, there weren't any threats on the Mediterranean. Emperor Constantine owned the Mediterranean.

But, like always, he was on assignment. A close friend of the Emperor's, Paul Quaon, had been given the Governorship of Britannia. Of course, the druids were spreading their ever popular revolt around at the time, and the Governor had decided that his daughter Miranda, of marrying age, and his son, not yet of age, should be sent somewhere safe until he was ready to send for them. And being the Emperor's confidant, that was easily arranged. The Emperor had accomodated the two with one of his residences, a Villa in Crete, and being the only Cretan military officer in Rome at the time, Constantine had personally chosen Captain Hilaris to safeguard them.
The assignment was tedious, but it was duty, and it allowed him a sort of home leave. Kydonia was home for Hilaris, the only home he knew save the sea.

After a brief prayer in the Temple of Neptune, Hilaris found the chariot that had been put at his disposal, and headed for the villa. He arrived to find two official looking scrolls placed on the marble tabletop in the courtyard. Miranda was nowhere to be found. He picked the scrolls up and went into the Quaon boy's room. The boy had taken a bit ill, and was consigned to bed rest. He explained that his sister had gone out into the town "to the baths or some such thing" and taken the two house slaves with her.

Hilaris wasn't really worried at all. There was of course no need for a bodyguard in Kydonia. There was no dissent like in Britannia, and no criminals like in Rome. It was a clean, simple town. But the boy didn't know from whence the scrolls came. Hilaris decided they must be for him and opened them up. One was a letter from Governor Quaon, asking for aid from his fleet. The second had been sent straight from Byzantium, where the Emperor was over-seeing the construction of New Rome.

Captain Hilaris

The Welsh rebellion has been contained to a single stonghold. It is nearly over and would be easy to dispatch, but the enemy has fortified its positions and acquired a navy of sorts. None of Governor Quaon's Legions are equipped to deal with the threat. You shall take your fleet to Britannia and break the stronghold by destroying the ships.

You may wonder why you have been given this assignment. The truth is that I need the Villa back, and I believe Britannia safe enough for you to bring Quaon's children there. As their safeguard, you are the obvious choice. Do not disappoint.

Your Emperor
