Yes I know, I know I really put the grave digging boots on when I dug this topic up, but (to quote the professor):

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE.

Spore, which could possibly become the greatest game of all time, will be purchasable 9-7-2008

Until then, enjoy these fine links

Played the Creature Creator Trial today. It was pretty sweet. The initial body shape, your creature's width or girth or whatever, is randomly generated, but you can keep regenerating it to get something you like. At first, this was pissing me off. You can add and subtract spinal length though, which solves most of the problem, but not all of it. Still, that's pretty much my only qualm with it. And the more I think about it, the less it seems to matter. This game is gonna be so damn amazing. It's hard to find anything at all wrong with it, except that I don't have it yet.

Oh yeah. I saw this in Walmart a few days ago. Looked silly so I didn't take much of a look at it, but it perked my interests enough to be like "wtf is with these creatures?" After reading this thread I'm a bit interested.

Sorry to disagree, but I look at Medieval II: Total War as the best game of all time, though upcoming Empire: Total War will probably outdo it. :P I'm too much of a historical type...

Medieval II for all its new features and improved graphics, was a less interesting game than Medieval I.

In some ways I agree. You can't select different periods of time in the new one, civil wars NEVER happen, factions do not re-emerge, nor are there emergent factions (like the Swiss and Burgundy). Aside from that, I prefer Med II. My dad is addictively playing it in the room next to me. He's been hooked on it for over a year now, and before that it was Med I. All my fault. Can never get him to play a good FPS, RPG, or anything else. He's simply waiting for Empire: Total War.

This game will be epic fail unless they remove SecuROM from it.

Can you say "hardware malfunction?"

SecuROM disables ALL your CD burners. It's DRM software EA's been using a lot lately.

Not really a problem with Mass Effect. They say it's only good up to three computers, but not true. It's good for registering up to three computers (so if you want extra content and patches, you're out of luck beyond that). Otherwise, the game starts and runs without the disk and you can install it on as many systems as you want.

Maybe EA missed that one. ^^

SecuROM is the devil.

Regarding Total War: Medieval 2 couldn't hold my attention nearly as long as Medieval 1. Rome, with the new setting, held my attention longer than M2 but not as long as Medieval. I didn't play Shogun. One thing that was an immediate turnoff was the M2 map, though I don't remember the one in the first game very well (and I didn't know my medieval history as well when I played the first game ) I'm not going to go into every detail, but, for example, why does Venice have Crete in 1080? Medieval 2 did entertain me for some time, but I lost interest more quickly.

I really liked games like Europa Universalis and Heartsof Iron, but I definitely the Total Wars sery is the best .
The saddest thing about Medieval Total War II is its historical inexactitude : in 1080 Kiev was still the powerful capital of Russia ( and not novgorod ), Venice didn't possess Crete, the Byzantinian Empire had Duras etc ...

I enjoyed playing Medieval I, never played the second one. I am strongly considering using the game for my students to play when we get to the Medieval Unit later in the year...by April and May.

I thought that the RTS aspect of M2 needed some tweaking. The overworld map was a lot of fun though. I really had a good time with it, and loved being able to control things like the papacy and being able to pump out princesses for, you know, diplomacy... right... diplomacy.

The Kingdoms expansion gave it a lot of extra life. I can't say how much I enjoyed running down 3000 peasants with 60 Ritterbruder. And finally being able to play Ireland was the best! Only unrealistic thing there is Ireland could never have fielded armies that large with that professional of units. They do have the best units in the game though.

EDIT- By the way, certain mods for Med 2 are absolutely great. Broken Crescent for example:

Kingdoms was pretty cool. My favorite was the Crusades campaign. In general I would prefer hyperaccuracy to the concessions they make for mainstream popularity (I know there are mods to make the games more realistic ;) ) The most egregious offense was the design of the Egyptian army in Rome:Total War, where they used the popular image of earlier Pharaonic Egypt instead of the Hellenistic army that the Ptolemies would have used.
