Out of Work...

I didn't have work today, and won't in the forseeable future. New Jersey's Governer, and the Speaker of the Assembly (one of the houses of our legislature) have a dispute over the budget, which means we missed our July 1st deadline, and the Governer shut down the government, except for essential employees (police, child services, etc.).

Interns aren't considered essential, so there goes my job until they manage to fix things up :(

Fiscal irresponsibility...

Yeah thanks.
Well, I'll have my job again whenever the government resumes operation, but they're nowhere close to agreeing.

Basically, the Governer wants to raise the sales tax from 6% to 7% in order to cover a budget shortfall. All appropriations bills must begin in the General Assembly (as opposed to the Senate, where the Governer has more support). The Speaker of the General Assembly refuses to post any bill that uses a sales tax increase for balancing the budget (he will only allow it for property tax relief). The Governer has promised to veto any budget bill that doesn't increase the sales tax. So there is no room for compromise, and both are too stubborn to give up.

Of course, the Republicans should get something good out of this. The Governer is a Democrat, as are the majority in both houses of the legislature. The Republicans should make a killing in the next set of elections.

Yeah. All I can is re-iterate that this sucks.

LOL, wasn't that the plot of the movie "Hair"??

I hear the casinos in Atlantic City are closed too. That should increase the shortfall!. What a bunch of bozos - the one thing they are supposed to do, they can't, but, oh, they can ban gay marriages, can't they!!

If the shortfall is 5%, why can't they just cut everyone's budget by 5%? Well, we know why, but it would be anti-PC for me to say why!

That's why you don't elect Republicans (not the good republicans who are sane, I mean Bush republicans). No matter what the reason for the tax, they'll oppose it.
"We need to have more tax?"

"No, we don't! Tax is evil!"

"But we need to pay for your war.

NH: Actually, I think my state is relatively pro-Gay Marriage. When I had my job, since I work in the State House Annex where the legislators work, somebody had posted some poll figures on the subject, and most people in our state are against such an amendment.

Quaon: Well the Democrats control all of the NJ government, so there's no blaming the Republicanas here. The only states in the country who have worse fiscal crises are the states damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Its utterly absurd. But more taxes really aren't the answer. The state is already fed up with their high taxes as it is, but doesn't have the stomach to cut spending on any government programs. That's where the problems come from.

Ahh, I see...how do I not know that? Seriously, I should know the politics of New Jersey if I live so close...God, I really need to brush up.

Huh? What? Huh?

They shut down the government?!? WTF!!!

You're seriously telling me that in the states, when the local government goes over budget they shut down?!?

That's... unthinkable.

That is honest to god, a totally alien concept.

That's something I'd expect of a third world country.

You're honestly telling me that your local goverment went over budget and all non-essentail workers have been suspended without pay?

That's totally mind boggling.

I can't get my head arround it.

They just stopped paying you?

I must be missing something.

You're a government employee - an intern.
You had a budget problem.
The governer shut down the goverment.

He shut down the goverment?

What?

What?!?

You're telling me, that all non-essentail staff just stopped having a job?

What about benifits?

What about contracts?

And it's the job of the government to give a damn.

That's the point of a government - to give money to the populace at a loss. That's what a goverment is! Government = money making machine!

The goverment can print money for heaven's sake!

Actually, I think that the regular, yearly employees, will get back pay once a budget is adopted. But I'm an hourly employee, so there's no contract, no benefits, no union. I either work or don't get paid.

Well, yeah, there isn't really anything anybody can do about this. I can just hope my government will actually do its job. :(

Folks, please. Government in the united states has to live within it's means, like any other corporation, and when the legislature refuses to cut outragious spending, well, you run out of money. If you don't have money, you can't pay people. What can the state do? Recall the governor, tho he actually has a plan. Recall the state house? Yes, but that takes time. Threaten to vote all the bastards out if they don't solve this by wednesday? Better.

New York City once went bankrupt! It can happen. When liberal tax and spend types over-estimate their revenues, then you get this type of crisis. What they need to do is cut the budget dramatically, but in order to do that, they need to cut entitlements, and you know who gets entitlements?? Minorities. Cut them, and you are racist, predjudice, and a hitler. No one in the New Jersey Government has the guts to do what needs to be done, so they just let everything shut down until the moneys balance out, then they start up everything again, but if you are a mother on welfare, or a cripple in need of help, well, you are screwed.

Even the federal government has shut down in the past because of a budget impasse. It's all because of cowards!

There's a beautiful word in the United Kingdom - "credit".
Here's another "loans".
Here's a third "central government".

There's nothing wrong with a little inflation - just look at post war Germany, hyper inflation didn't hurt them none in the long run (or is Germany suddenly no longer the third greastest economic power?)

Governments are the ultimate money lenders. Lend a couple of million to local government, print a couple of million to lower the value of your currency to make repayment easier. Raping the system, it's a beautiful thing. World Bank < A Nations Government.

We're talking about the US government, Nag. They aren't smart enough to do that.
