In Michigan, a young college student named George Rockwell left Ann Arbor as soon as the news of the "Beast" was announced. He and a few friends sneaked away and fled north, overland, to the wooded and sheltered areas of Michigan, and began recruiting other "sympaticos" to join with him. Their goal? To hole up until the shadow government was removed, and keep their heads low. They also began stock-piling weapons.

"We're losing a grip on the people of America," the Head of Human Resources stated plainly. "We need to do something quickly to make this venture of the New World Order we're pursuing work better to our advantage. Our demolition of Washington, D.C. has not had the uniting effect we expected against our... 'terrorist threat.' "

"I agree," replied the United States' new president and the head of the Goreprime Enterprises corporation. "We need to find a way to reconnect to Texas and the West Coast and get them to accept chipping under the Beast program. Get them to see that we are their friends and that we only have their utmost safety in mind." He steepled his chubby fingers together in thought, his shadowy gaze shifting towards his head of Research and Development. "Have you any input, doctor? Now would be the time."

"Yes I do, as a matter of a fact, Mr. Goreprime," the good doctor said as he stood up and took the figurative soap box. "The people fear us because they fear change. They do not understand the protocols that we have brought into effect over the nation. If we were to make them understand, they would be more accepting of the chipping regulations and our state of Martial Law. For many decades our society has been manipulating events to take us this far, occassionally experimenting with subliminal messages... I suggest we take this feature an extra step... play commercials about the dangers of terrorism throughout the nation while subliminally programming the people's minds. Perhaps we could also send that Maitreya fellow on nationwide tours and play around a bit with the lighting and sound a little."

"Like what Hitler did while making his speeches..." President Goreprime mused, stroking his chins. "Have it done, then. I want them reminded about why they need us!"

Governor Jonathan Myers sat alone in his office of the Chicago Federal Building. Flanked by sky-scrapers and surrounded by the towers of the city, the Federal Building seemed relatively low-key and plain. Its appearance however belied the events happening at near lightspeed in and around it.

Myers had been elected in a special election after the impeachment of Governor Blagojevich due to investigations of corruption in his government; running as the Democratic candidate and the only one without a history of corruption in the election, he had won the office and slowly united his state behind him over the past year and a half. Now, however, actions on the East Coast were threatening to dissolve everything he had worked for.

The intercom on his desk buzzed once, taking his attention away from the glass wall in front of him. "Governor Myers, we have confirmed that Governor Doyle of Wisconsin has been killed by United States Army Forces."

Myers leaned forward and held the call button. "Thank you, James- send in Colonel Andelus." A moment later, the door to his office opened and a sharp-looking Colonel came in withi his hat in hand. "Thank you for seeing me Colonel Andelus. What I'm asking of you will not be easy, nor may it be the right thing in the long run. But right now I need the support of the Illinois National Guard.

"Recent events in Wisconsin and the Pacific Coast have disturbed me greatly. More and more, the Federal Government is becoming exactly what I hoped it would not- a tyrannical, near fascist state of rule. There are not many Federal troops in the state, but they have been put on alert.

"What I am asking of you is to join me in the securing of Illinois as a neutral state in the coming conflicts. Indiana and Ohio are most likely going to do the same, and Kentucky's legislature is voting on such a measure as we speak. Will you help me preserve freedom in the Union?"

"Governor, it would be my pleasure. I grew up in Illinois and sure as hell don't want to see my home destroyed. I'll discuss this with my Federal counterpart and see what I can do to negotiating a pullout or incorporation, depending on what he thinks." Andelus saluted briefly. "Good luck, Governor."

Myers nodded in return. "And good luck to you, Colonel- Godspeed and may we yet live to draw another free breath."

Colonel Andelus was briefly glancing about the lobbey of his counterpart's office before being flagged in by the secretary. Inside the office, Major Hielfragg sat behind his desk with his hands steepled. He seemed to be in a teleconference with someone. "...I'll be sure to discuss that with him, General. Oh, here he comes in now...." The Major pressed a button on his telephone, and leaned back in his chair. "Have a seat, Colonel... I understand that you wish to discuss Illinois' neutrality in the seemingly growing conflict in our country."

"Yes, that's right, Major," Colonel Andelus replied. "We feel that if the conflict escalates any further, we would like Illinois' citizens to be safe from any possible harm."

"That's very noble of your state government," the Major said. "We would like the same for Illinois and the rest of the country. Unfortunately, the terrorist leaders of the Pacific Coast don't seem to want to see it that way. They want to destroy America."

Colonel Andelus lifted a brow at the speech, but things seemed to running smoothly for the meeting. "So what can we do, Major?"

"Well, Colonel, the federal government is willing to grant the state of Illinois complete amnesty from any military action taken against it provided everyone accepts the chips. They're harmless, don't hurt much when placed in, and are far more convenient than credit cards. They're simply quite amazing... have we got a deal Colonel?"

He arrived at Rockwell's camp a few miles from Traverse City. He was tired, but he knew he was safe here.

"OK, you've made it. Welcome to our camp," said Rockwell, looking at the battered and tired young man in camo fatigues.

"Thank you, I, I just didn't know where to go."

"Wait!" and a man in green fatigues grabbed the new recruit's right hand. "Give me a knife."

He took a large hunting knife and sliced open the young man's wrist, while he screamed in pain, then he dug it out!

"A goddam chip. He's going to lead the bastards right here!"

"Let's get moving," said Rockwell. "Now, no time to lose." As they were panically grabbing everything in sight, they could hear helocopters in the distance. "Underground, everyone, and to the caves, and then out of here. We can rondezvous at point 7."

Everyone scrambled, while the man in green fatugues crushed the chip under his boot. He then took out his pistol and put a bullet through the head of the refugee that came to them. In a twinkling, everyone else was gone.

Riots broke out in Los Angeles when the Governor refused to secede. Secret Service agents were called into Sacramento to defend him. Back in LA, a photographer captured a federal agent shooting a black man through the back of the head as he ran away. It was like a second Rodney King beating. The riots became more violent and looting and burning occured. 30 soldiers in a patrol down the Pacific Coast Highway were ambushed by paramilitaries and slaughtered. The Governor declared a state of national emergency. And in Phoenix, order was degenerating into chaos as well...

OOC:

I am copying this post from my thread from about a year ago when I expanded into Alaska, prior to the establishment of any of the new region. I'm not sure if it fits with the current happenings, but perhaps one of you could help me revise my old story a bit to fit the current one?

IC:

To the sound of sporadic thunder, with lightning illuminating the skies of the Alaskan night, God's Holy Army set foot on Alaskan soil. As in Asia, word had been sent to the natives beforehand, and none had dared protest. In fact, they had been quite supportive. Not a finger was raised to stop Sakha's Chosen as they launched their invasion of one of the Great United States of America.

In Juneau and Washington, Sakhan emmissaries casually delivered identical notes to the American government. One one side of the note was a demand that American forces vacate Alaskan soil. On the other was the image of a Sakhan battleship.

The United States of America were certainly a powerful nation, but they had long since lost their status of one sole superpower. Greater Sakha was also a strong military nation, and furthermore, would call upon some of the powerful nations of Asia to join her in this crusade. The Federal and Alaskan State governments entered paniced dipomatic frenzy, deciding how to respond to this threat.

Alaskan defenses were not as strong as they should have been. Not strong enough to stand up to the fanatical army of God's Annointed. The people of Alaska stood on the side of the invaders, forcing Juneau to reveal her empty hand.

Finally, the United States decided that it was in their best interests to tolerate this aggression. The constituencies of the lower forty-eight were not willing to fight for what they saw as a slab of tundra. The Alaskan representatives argued to no avail; the President had been elected on the promised of peace, and his party were willing to sacrifice Alaskan votes for those of the peace-favorers in other states. As the Alaskan government accepted payment for the western third of the state, the American Dream began to crack.

The United States and Greater Sakha officially signed a peace recognizing the new borders. Holdouts were either captured and sent to Alaska, or if they would not surrender, slaughtered. Greater Sakha now had two wings, on either side of the Beiring Strait, glaring at the world like a beautiful but deadly bird of prey.

The Great Sakhan Expansion was over. The lust for conquest had been sated, in a relatively peaceful fashion. Greater Sakha could sleep again. The world had appeased her. Would they do so the next time?

Well, 1. Washington got nuked hella hard, so no notes were delivered there. And 2. the current President of the United States is the Shadow Government "emergency" President and was not elected. Plus, he most certainly has never promised peace. Remove these two aspects and you should do fine revising the story. Sakha was more than likely never opposed because of all the insanity taking place in the mainland United States.

So Greater Sakha threatened Alaska, which was left pretty much to its own. Without help from the Shadow government, which was preoccupied with the continental U.S., Alaska was left to fend for itself, and chose to sacrifice land for peace. Eventually, after the U.S.A. was gone for good, the rest of Alaska was gobbled up by the Sakhans. Furthermore, the imposition of martial law and the installation of the chips had soured the Alaskans, who were thus willing to turn to the Sakhans over America.

Does that sound about right?

Colonel Andelus took in Major Hielfragg for a moment, leaning back in this chair. "Well, I can't speak for the Governor, Major. The deal certainly is tempting and makes sense. I'll see what I can do to talk to him about it."

"You do that, sir." Major Hielfragg responded, nodding as if praising a school child. He saluted Andelus as he stood and the Colonel left the room. Outside, Major Welsh, Chief of Staff for the Colonel, nodded to the secretary on his way out and falling into step with Andelus.

As the two walked outside into the early afternoon sun of Chicago, Andelus nodded with a quick twitch of his head to his counterpart, and put on his BDU hat. Helmets would come later.

"I take it the meeting went well with Major Hielfragg?" Major Welsh asked in hushed tones, even out in the streets of the city.

"As well as one can go," Andelus responded quietly. "I'll fill you in with the Governor when we get there." The two military officers walked in silence for the rest of the trip back to the Federal Building, one of the few certain places that those loyal to the Governor could discuss events freely. Entering the building and passing through security in a few minutes, Colonel Clark Andelus and Major Andrew Welsh strode to the door of Governor Myers' office. Andelus knocked quietly before the Governor yelled for him to enter.

"Governor Rollings, the entire state of Wisconsin has been put under martial law and will soon have the entire state under surveillance; that hardly sounds like freedom to me...Yes, Governor...Thank you, Jim- this means a lot. Best of luck with that vote." Governor Myers hung up the phone and glanced up at the two military officers. "Governor Rollings of Ohio- He's going to try and push through the vote at the state legislature to join Illinois in neutrality for the duration of the conflict. Governor Isaac of Kentucky has agreed and passed the legislation, but barely."

"What about Governor Tiffens?" Colonel Andelus asked of the Indiana Governor.

"Andrea's a little busy at the moment. Her legislature is behind her, but there are more Federal troops in the state than any of the others, except for Kentucky. You have news for me, Colonel?"

"Governor, Major Hielfragg, the Federal Commander of the Illinois Military District offered the entire state of Illinois neutrality and amnesty- however, every person in the state would have to accept an implanting of chips into their bodies."

"Unacceptable," Myers replied, shaking his head. "I can cite more rights than Hielfragg has probably heard of against it."

"Well, sir...then I think it's time we start looking at other options."

"I know Colonel," Myers stood up and began to pace the distance of his windows. "There's no chance Hielfragg would pull out of the state?"

"Doubtful, sir. He's reporting to Lt. General Sykes of Midwest Command, a noted hard-liner. If we had more time, I might have been able to pull some strings at the Pentagon..."

"But not any more." Myers sighed. "Are we really thinking about this? Secession?"

"I'm not comfortable with it either, Governor," Colonel Andelus replied. "My ancestors fought for Illinois in the Civil War though- that was some nasty stuff. Brother against brother, father against son. I don't want that to happen to Illinois- neutrality's best, but if we can't, then I'd prefer not to be forced into fighting or giving up our freedoms. The most important thing we can do now, sir, is make sure that the other governors of the region are with us."

"Ohio is with us, and so is Kentucky, though tenuously. Indiana might be a bit harder."

"I'll discuss things with Hielfragg again later this evening, let him know that his deal doesn't seem that appealing. However," Andelus paused. "I'm going to assign you several guards from 2nd Battalion. They're not exactly Secret Service, but they are better than the current security guards we have for the time being."

"Is that necessary, Colonel?"

"Right now, Governor, a little more security can never hurt."

"I suppose...what about news from the 101st Airborne or 10th Cavalry?"

"The 101st is at its base of Fort Cambell, Kentucky with no apparent orders to activate yet. I'm trying to get ahold of a few of the commanders down there and I might be able to sway them to neutrality at least. The 10th Cavalry will be easier, though they are part of the Federal contigent in Indiana. I think I'm going to be meeting with the Commanding Officer in the next day or so to discuss this."

"Excellent," Myers sat down again, sounding less enthusiastic than his word choice. "Thank you, Colonel- everything gets more messy from here."

"Yes, sir- but at least we know where we stand." Andelus saluted and left with Welsh in tow to grab some materials before making the return trip to meet with Major Hielfragg.

Quebec City was a mess. Guerilla combat had taken its toil, surprisingly, with the strong Canadian gun laws. However, Allen Kownnen has been smuggling in a few discrete shipments of weapons from his brother, who was a CEO of a munitions company in the US. The brother was currently offshore in Menhad.

Kownnen had united the former socialists in Quebec under the flag of libertarianism: they had seen the ineffectiveness of their socialist Prime Minister, Steven Harper (whose attempt at diplomacy had failed spectacularly when the US demanded that Quebec citizens be Beast chipped as well).

Kownnen planned to call Quebec Durick Veta after this was all over. He didn’t know why: it was a cool name and sounded vaguely Greek of Latin, although of course it meant absolutely nothing. The only similarities he could see with other names was that there is a town called La Veta in the US.

Kownnen was himself personally leading a squad of three in a guerilla attack through this city. As they passed by the Château Frontenac, it became apparent that the US was using this as a base.

“This is one of their command posts,” Allen said. “We don’t have the manpower here to attack this. Claude (OOC: Yes, Paradise, that may well be you), get on the radio. We need to wait it out here-we move too far and they might spot us.”

“Compris, monsieur, (understood sir)” said Claude, picking up his radio. “Merde d'Oh, ils nous ont repèrés! (Oh shit, they spotted us!)”

The American soldiers opened fire. Claude and Allen managed to evade the gunfire, while the other squadman was shot and killed. Claude took his RPG and shoot a grenade at the US soldiers.

Allen took the radio. “We’re under attack-we’re under atta-“

Suddenly the gunfire stopped. Kownnen looked up. The US soldier had their hands in the air. “Uh…sir, can you understand us?” one of them shouted.

“Yes, I sure as hell can,” Allen replied.

“We’ve just got word from Command here-we don’t want any part of this. The Shadow Government-everyone here hates them. We’ve got no reason to fight any longer-we’re surrendering.”

“Perfect. Soldier, do you have family under Shadow jurisdiction?”

“Yes, sadly I do.”

“Then help us here, and you’re family will be safe.”

“Ok. That’s what commands telling us now. We’re supposed to recognize the leader of the Canadian resistance as our chief commander now.”

“I am he. Soldier, what’s your name?”

“Lance Corporal Alex Washington.”

“Lance Corporal, welcome to Durick Veta.”

On the one month anniversary of the "terror attack" on D.C., all Hell broke loose in Sacramento. Men who had no business fighting a war, all types of working men, joined in the fight. A mob some three milion strong moved up from the south, with the people of Sacramento joining in. Although a good many of them were without weapons, they stormed the capitol building.

The Secret Service Agents did the best they could to fight the mob off. But there were simply too few of them. Even though they were armed with SMGs, the distance was inevitably closed, and they were simply beat to death by the rioters. Governor Villarigosa was dragged into the street and shot dead. Th US Flag was pulled down, and the Bear Flag rose in its place. The old Federal flag was doused in petroleum and burned. The Bear Flag Republic was reborn...

The Colonel was once again in that uncomfortable office of Major Hielfragg's. He had told Hielfragg what the governor of Illinois had decided on and the Major's reaction was somewhat disquieting. His eyes grew very small and slitted, and his lips incredibly thin. Colonel Andelus frankly didn't know if his Federal counterpart was going to explode or not. What happened next unnerved him even more.

"Well I'm sorry to hear that, Colonel," the Major said in a very easily calm and smooth voice. "I really was hoping Illinois would cooperate... even put in a good word for you with the rest of the Federal command structure. But since your governor has turned us down, I'm afraid there's nothing I can do." He steepled his fingers together. "My hands are tied, Sir. You know what the General is like. He won't take this refusal to comply to chipping sitting down." He closed his eyes and sighed.

"I'm sorry, Colonel... I will have to report this." He stood up and saluted Colonel Andelus. "You may go, Sir."

Colonel Andelus returned the salute, then left the Major's office, feeling incredibly dead inside.
