Edward Kumumba, leader of the Nationalist Party in Parliament, was elected Prime Minister with a bare majority of the vote. Kumumba's Nationalist Party only won 144 of the 300 seats, but recent developments caused Lumumba to secure a number of crossover votes. "The President has authorized a treaty between our fair country and the outlaw organization of Esmarelda Villalobos," Kumumba said. "I respect what President Freeman did over 30 years ago, but his judgment is failing him in his old age." Just days ago, Admiral Claude Nero and a representative of The Black Hand, Villalobos' organization, signed the Treaty of Santo Domingo. A former leader of the resistance, Villalobos and her organization were given virtual free reign over Western Songhai. When asked about his decision, President Freeman didn't mince words. "I remember when we were fighting for Independence," Freeman said. "There were people in the halls of Parliaments in Europe who saw us as terrorists. Should we view the Westerners as terrorists in the same way, or should we welcome them into the fold wholeheartedly? I chose an unconditional welcome that will end up profitable for both sides." Kumumba disagreed. "If our President continues to lead in this manner, it may be time for a showdown," Kumumba said. "The Santo Domingo agreement will not stand." |
