The Kathmandu Times The Republic of Greater Songhai held elections recently and President Melvin Freeman has been re-elected to another term. Freeman has served as Leader of the Republic since it's founding in 1972. No political party has secured a majority in the National Assembly. The Freemanites appear to hold the balance of power as neither the Commonwealth Party nor the Nationalist Party won the necessary 151 seats to secure a majority in the 300 member Assembly. The Freemanites, a group of Assemblymen loyal to the President, have held the balance of power during the past three Assembly Elections. In the early days of the Republic, the Freemanites were the Governing Party. Recently, they've been relegated to junior partner in a series of Governing Coalitions in Parliament. Nationalist Leader Edward Lumumba, whose Party won 144 seats, plans to be installed as Chancellor at the 1st meeting of the New Assembly. Commonwealth Leader Darius Thompson, Chancellor during the previous Parliament, has been courting Freemanite Assemblymen in an effort to be elected Chancellor for another two years. Miles Gordon, spokesman for the Freemanites, stated that his caucus would not be bound to vote for either of the leading candidates for Chancellor. |
