The Emperor announced today that elections would be held in one month (game time) to replace the Imperial Council. 100 new seats are being added to the Council which will now totalize 700 seats. The voting system in Paradise is fully proportionnal: parties get the share of seats corresponding to the share of votes received. Here was the repartition of seats between parties before the dissolution of the Council: Imperial Party 287 (47.8%) Ultra-Conservative Party 198 (33.0%) Moderate Conservative Party 54 (9.0%) Democratic Party 27 (4.5%) Free UAE 16 (2.7%) Yemen Union 7 (1.2%) Liberal-Democratic Party 6 (1.0%) Socialist Party 3 (0.5%) Not Affiliated 2 (0.3%) The following parties will compete for seats in the coming election: Imperial Party (IP): This party fully supports the Emperor. They are military interventionnists and support increased military spendings. They believe Paradise should act as the regional police and intervene in countries acting against paradisian interests. War is considered as a mean to achieve goals. They are mostly against civil spendings and believe corporations must not be taxed. They are somewhat socially conservatives but still, they consider social issues of second importance. They are against secularization. This party's electorate is essentially made of CEOs, wealthy or specialized citizens, officers and other war freaks. Ultra-Conservative Party (UCP): This is the second most important party in Paradise. They are also military interventionnists but for a different reason: they believe Paradise should act as Allah's will and convert/eradicate heretic countries. They did not support the invasion of UE, but would support a full scale invasion of christian/jewish/atheist countries. They despise the Holy League and the pope. They support increased spendings in religion and in defence. They are excessively moral and therefore, excessively socially conservatives. They look at big paradisian corporations with suspicion, but need them for work. They are fully against secularization. This party's electorate is made of poor people and low-rank soldiers. Moderate Conservative Party (MCP): This party was created from the Ultra-Conservative Party in a reaction against its extremism. They support increased spendings in religion, but less spendings in defence. They believe Paradise's foreign policy should be isolationnist. Heretic countries do not have to be attacked because Allah will punish them by Himself, either during life or death. They are more moderate in their social conservatism than the Ultra-Conservative Party sympathizers. They are against secularization. This party's electorate is made of middle-class citizens (they aren't very numerous in Paradise, you are either poor or rich) and high-rank soldiers. Democratic Party (DP): This party promotes a true democracy for Paradise. They see the current system as corrupt and oppressive. They support increased spendings in religion and less spendings in defence. They believe Paradise's foreign policy should be isolationnist. They are moderately social conservatives but favor secularization. They are pretty much a clone of the MCP except for their democratic and pro-secularization stances. This party's electorate is made of people from all horizons, but mostly from high and middle classes. Free UAE (FUAE): This party advocates the independence of the United Arab Emirates from Paradise. Since this party is a coalition from all the political spectrum, they do not have official positions on most issues. In 2003, they got 16 seats. This year, polls predict they will get no more than 10 seats. Yemen Union (YU): This party advocates more autonomy for the Yemen provinces of Paradise. Since this party is a coalition from all the political spectrum, they do not have official positions on most issues. The movement is quite marginal and can expect to get at most 5 seats this year. Liberal-Democratic Party (LDP): This is the only liberal party in Paradise. They, like the DP, promote a true democracy for Paradise. They support less spendings in defence and in religion, and more civil spendings in general. They believe Paradise's foreign policy should be isolationnist. Socially, they could be seen as centrists: people should have the right to choose what's good for them. They fully favor secularization. It is, in fact, the liberal version of the DP. They want more taxes for big corporations and less taxes for the low and middle classes. This party's electorate is made of intellectuals and other thinkers. It is quite marginal. Socialist Party (SP): This party promotes much more taxes on corporative profits, the abolition of religious spendings, a drastic reduction in defence spendings and more civil spendings in general. They believe Paradise's foreign policy should be isolationnist. Socially, they are centrists just like the LPD. They fully support secularization. They want more taxes for the wealthy class, a fiscal statu quo for the middle-class and less taxes for the low-class. This party's electorate is made of dreamers and idealists. It is very marginal. * * * The election will take place on March 21st (real-life time). |

I think I'll consider the poll results. A party getting more votes in the poll will get some extra more seats. That means, the IP may very well get a majority this time B) (Oh well, anyway, majority or not, the Imperial Council holds no real power. It's more like a consultative council. The legislative and executive powers all belong to a single man: the Emperor ^_^ ) |

O.O.C.: Censorship is a common practice in Paradise, but it doesn't apply here. Like many western democracies, there is a strong cleavage between the economic classes. If you're poor, you'll probably vote for the UCP. If you're rich, you'll probably vote for the IP. If you're from the middle-class, you'll probably go for the MCP. The people tends to follow this cleavage without considering the parties positions. Remember, they were born and raised in a very conservative muslim dictatorship. Most Paradisans don't care about democracy, they love their God, they love their Nation and they love their Emperor. |

Election Results Today, all paradisian men of 21 years old or higher had to vote to elect the new Imperical Council. Here are the official results, followed by a brief analysis (note: for the popular vote percentages, results were rounded to one decimal): Imperial Party (IP) 354 seats 50.6% of popular vote (+2.8%) Ultra-Conservative Party (UCP) 245 seats 35.0% of popular vote (+2.0%) Moderate Conservative Party (MCP) 42 seats 6.0% of popular vote (-3.0%) Democratic Party (DP) 41 seats 5.9% of popular vote (+1.4%) Liberal-Democratic Party (LDP) 12 seats 1.7% of popular vote (+0.7%) Free UAE (FUAE) 3 seats 0.4% of popular vote (-2.3%) Socialist Party (SP) 2 seats 0.3% of popular vote (-0.2%) Yemen Union (YU) 1 seat 0.1% of popular vote (-1.1%) * * * The Imperial Party will now form a small majority in the Imperial Council, holding 354 seats on the 700 total seats. Most of their gains were made from the popular vote collapse of the FUAE and the YU. Those two last parties are now more marginal than ever, getting in order 3 seats and 1 seat. The Ultra-Conservative Party also well performed, being the official opposition party with 245 seats. They slightly increased their popular vote percentage (+2.0%), increase that was mainly made at the expense of the MCP. The two democratc parties, the DP and the LDP, both increased their popular vote percentages, respectively by +1.4% and +0.7%. Now, 7.6% of Paradisians support a true democracy for Paradise, the best score ever. O.O.C.: Reminder: I must update my NS wiki page :P |
