Chabahar, Sistan
At three in the morning, it was dark. Most people in the city were asleep. A cool wind blew north from the Gulf of Oman as Captain Shahrdad Sadiqi stepped onto the heavy cruiser Paloon Gardan's open flying bridge that was situated on the roof of the enclosed main bridge. Steam lazily erupted from the ceramic mug he held while he surveyed his surroundings. To port, directly across the pier from Paloon Gardan was the heavy cruiser Koloon Bastak. To starboard was the light cruiser Shah Alborz, and beyond her were Khashechal, Khersan, and Chaloon. Each of the five ships, Paloon Gardan included, was buzzing with activity. Dark shapes moved quickly about the decks as men went about their work. Lines were detatched from their bollards and men walked up the gangways as the ships came to life. A several hundred yards aft, a series of red lights traveled across the dark sky as the destroyers of DesRon 07 began to leave the harbor. By the time Captain Sadiqi finished his coffee, DesRon 08 was making it's way into the open sea as well. The Captain adjusted his hat and stroked his moustache one last time before heading down the stairs to the main bridge.

"Captain, we're ready to depart." reported one of Sadiqi's lieutenants. He responded only with a nod before taking his seat on the bridge. "Helm, take us out."

Slowly and gently, Paloon Gardan and the other cruisers of CruRon 04 backed out of their berths and took to the sea. It wasn't long before they met back up with the two destroyer squadrons that departed earlier and the aircraft carrier Tempest. As a group, the three squadrons made their way west, towards the Strait of Hormuz, escorted by a pack of submarines below the water and an AWACS high in the sky. At a fast 32 knots, it would take nearly ten hours for the ships to reach their destination. Shortly after lunch, the faint scream of jet engines could clearly be heard. In the air well behind the ships, many dozens of white contrails contrasted against the clear blue sky. At the head of them was a formation of massive aircraft. On the horizon to the west of the ships, Qeshm Island slowly came into view. As the island came closer, the aircraft quickly overtook the small fleet. As they began to fly over the island, hundreds of paratroopers were dropped. After several passes, some three thousand paratroopers had been dropped onto the large island. Totally without armor or artillery, the paratroopers would have to rely on the big guns of the Navy to provide support should they run into any trouble. Almost immedietly, they began to move towards the island's largest town, Qeshm.

Over the next several days, transport ships would begin to arrive at the island with the tanks, artillery, and infantry that would be required to occupy the entire landmass.

Government Press Release
"As of today, February 12th, Sistani forces have occupied the unincorporated island of Qeshm in the Strait of Hormuz.

With the growing tension in the region and large quantities of new oil being put onto the market, we feel that control of the island in the center of one of the largest oil chokepoints in the world is necessary for regional stability. Without control of the island, shipping through the strait would be under constant threat from terrorists, pirates, and any other groups that could attempt to destroy the environmental and economic integrity of the region.

Shipping through the strait should not be affected by the occupying forces."

"Al Araam will not oppose the annexation of Qeshm Island by Sistan so long as the passage of Araamenian shipping into and out of the Strait of Hormuz isn't obstructed in any way. Al Araam will continue to ship 800,000 barrels of petroleum products to Sistan daily so long as our security or our economic well being are not threatened. Shipments can and will be cut off if Sistan attempts to control the flow of goods to or from Al Araam."

Is there any particular reason why I can't have a dog in this race besides Sistan want's to ignore me? It seems particularly obnoxious that because he doesn't like me, I can't RP in this theater.

Mods??

"Sistan will not make any move to hinder shipping through the Strait. In fact, Destroyer Squadrons Nine and Ten have been deployed to escort Al Araamian tankers in case any outside parties would try to jeopardize the shipments of new oil into the world market."

--Prince Cyrus Mansur

In the days after the paratroopers landed on the island, the three thousand men quickly linked up and marched into the town of Qeshm all but unopposed. Since the fall of Iran, the people had lived without a government and the dilapidated town showed it. Roads were cratered with potholes or washed out in countless places. Buildings crumbled with neglect, and water was out throughout most of the town. Upon seizure of the town from the lawless bandits that had declared themselves kings upon the fall of the previous governments, the people could once again feel safe at home. When the town's small port was under control and quick repairs were made to the docks, supply ships full of troops, armor, and artillery flooded onto the island. Perhaps the most important shipments, however, were the food and engineers.

Over several weeks, engineers worked hard to get the town and surrounding area up and running. Rusted out water mains were dug up and replaced. Roads were rebuilt. Unsafe buildings were razed and rebuilt, and life returned to Qeshm. To the south, the rest of the bandits and pirates that made themselves at home on the island were easily routed and exterminated. Villages across the island were revitalized under the Sistani flag. Eventually, the engineers would rebuild the roads throughout the island, and even build fast new passenger trains to connect the towns. There was even talk of a high speed maglev being built to connect Qeshm to Sistan via Spartaoi and an underground tunnel.

As Qeshm returned to life, still more Sistani engineers were at work on the island. Construction of a naval base was under way along with an airfield. Perhaps even more importantly, they were searching for oil.

As new roads and rails snaked across the island and the towns blossomed into activity once again, the Sistani engineers found what they were looking for. It was no secret that Qeshm was sitting on a very large oilfield, but even the engineers were surprised with just how much. Along with the oil, they also found drilling teams from Spartaoi doing the same job. In exchange for a large naval base just across the water from the north shore of the island, just west of Bandar-e Abbas, the Spartaoian government was allowed to lease a fair sized lot on the island for oil drilling. In additon, a deal was reached that would allow Sistan to build a large railway from the island to Chabahar via Spartaoi. It would have a number of freight rails and two high speed passenger rails that were to cross the water west of Bandar-e Abbas and hug the coast with stops at most of the towns along the way including the Spartaoian capital of Jask. Accompanying the railway would be a large oil pipeline along the same route. In addition, Spartaoi would recieve a license to produce the Sundew class destroyer escort*.

To safeguard the island, the Sistani government ordered the construction of large shore batteries ranging from 305mm to 610mm at several points on the island. SAM sites would also be constructed, as well as AAA placements and cruise missile silos.
