This afternoon Emperor Jacob I died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family and government officials attending to him at the St. Mark Imperial Hospital in Adowa, South Africa. The Emperor was admitted to the emergncy room 4 days ago due to pneumonia symptoms. After intensive treatments were administered, doctors initially were optimistic about his condition, but the Emperor suddenly and unexpectedly took a turn for the worse about 30 hours ago, before finally passing away. The Emperor was aged 71. A state funeral is planned but has been postponed indefinitely due to a succession dispute that has arisen, and his body is currently stored in a temporary mausoleum in the Imperial Palace. Emperor Jacob has left a profound legacy on his nation during his long and mostly peaceful reign. He has overseen the rebuilding process after a generation of warfare and strife, and contributed much to improving race relations between the white and black portions of the popuilation. --- No new Emperor has been designated yet and Interior Minister Kwadjo Osegan has been appointed temporary Regent with a regency oversight board consisting of the royal family and other ministers. The delay in the succession is caused by certain cryptic remarks made by the bedridden Jacob, who endorsed his disenfranchised elder son John as his proper heir, and not the current Crown Prince, George. Thus death of this Emperor has called into controversy the legitimate succession - whether John, a Catholic European Cardinal, or George, should succeed into the IMperial throne. John, although not having stepped foot on the African continent in 2 decades, has sympathy from conservative Latin Catholics, and the poor, both black and white, discontent with the economic exploitation under "robber baron capitalism". George has support from nonLatin Catholics and the middle class that sees its new prosperity as a legacy of Emperor Jacob's economic liberalization policies. The politics are increasinly polarizing and no good resolution appears in sight. Armed conflict seems possible but all sides are wishing to avert such an outcome. |

Our government herein expresses its deep sadness at the passing of Emperor Jacob. A wise man who was always a friend to Syawla will be much missed. On the succession, our government deigns to comment but to say that we hope peace will continue to prevail whatever the outcome. ---Antoine Dupers, Imperial Chancellor to the Syawlan Empire--- |

Catholic Europe will support the legitimate eldest male heir of Emperor Jacob, his son Cardinal Crown Prince John. I will crown him as Emperor as soon as is possible and ask that Prince George renounce any claims that he may think he has on the throne. Pope John XXV |

Neo-Macedonia sends no messages of mourning for the passing of Emperor Jacob I. Though he may have done great things in his reign as Emperor of South Africa, his continued dispute over the rightful claim that Neo-Macedonia has over the occupied zone put a deep stain on him in the eyes of Neo-Macedonians everywhere. We support Cardinal Crown Prince John and hope that his rightful claim to the throne of South Africa won't be denied. We look forward to working with him and hope to bring an end to the dispute which has plagued our two nations for so many years. -Queen Chloe of Neo-Macedonia |

The Imperial Chancellor condemns the claims made by the Pope in relation to the succession question in South Africa. The succession to the South African imperial Crown is a domestic issue, for South Africa alone, and neither Pope, Neo-Macedonian nor European Cleric should play any part in deciding the issue. The Imperial Chancellor demands that all outside parties withdraw from interfering in this issue and that South Africa be, for once, left in peace to decide its own future. ---Foreign Office of the Syawlan Empire--- |

In a surprise announcement, the Office of the Regent has revealed that a compromise has been reached, thus settling the question of the imperial succession. It has been determined that Cardinal John and Prince George both have a right to the imperial succession. However, these two sovereigns and brothers spoke privately to each other, and reached a personal compromise, sparing the nation of further conflict. Cardinal John will be crowned sole Emperor, but the infant son of Prince George, Isaiah, has been designated as the sole legitimate heir to the Cardinal-Emperor; the Cardinal-Emperor would be barred from fathering children due to his vows anyways. Prince George will be appointed Imperial Chancellor. The announcement is widely acclaimed by all the peoples of South Africa, who are overjoyed that the dispute has been settled so quickly and peacefully to the satisfaction of all sides, and without the violence characteristic of the nation in the past. The proper state funeral of Emperor Jacob will be held soon in the capital, Adowa. |

Our government is delighted that the issue has been settled and congratulate the new South African Emperor on his accession. This proves the correctness of our previous communique which determined that South Africa could and should be left to deal with such issues itself. ---Antoine Dupers, Imperial Chancellor of the Syawlan Empire--- |

Neo-Macedonia is greatly pleased to see that God's will has been fulfilled. We look forward to working with the new Emperor in ending the occupied zone situation. As to the Syawlan comments made, we feel they are nothing more than slander and misinformed remarks. Neither Neo-Macedonia nor Catholic Europe put forth any actions which would dictate the out come of the succession of the South African Emperor. We did, merely express our opinion as to whom had the rightful claim to the thrown. So if the Syawlan nation is now looking to oppress and void nation's and dare I say people's right to freedom of speech, then I truly pray for Syawlan souls. -Queen Chloe of Neo-Macedonia |

It is good to see such a potentially caustic situation resolved peacefully and diplomatically. I praise both Princes on their maturity and level-headedness. I am sure however, that my Emperor prefered Prince John, and so i share is joy in John's ascension. May peace and God be with South Africa and its new Emperor. --Governor Werner VonEpstein |

Private and Confidential To: Cardinal-Emperor John of South Africa From: His Holiness, Pope John XXV My Emperor, my I first offer my sincerest congratulations in securing the South African throne for yourself. God truly willed you your birthright, despite the threat which hung over it. However, I am most concerned that, upon your death, the heir, Prince Isaiah, will not be as true to the Faith as you are. I urge you to send him to Catholic Europe to ensure that he receives the proper training and instructioning in the Church as is fit for a true Catholic Emperor. May God truly bless your reign. |
