The civil war was into its first month with only a few hints at an end in sight. The sounds of heavy artillery could be heard in the strongest militia stronghold, Boosaaso, which was under the control of Imam Mohammed Abdullah. From the Grand Mosque within the city, the spiritual and military leader of the United Northeastern Front (a conglomeration of several tribes in the Horn of Africa) planned his next move. The United Northeastern Front's military looked like the following: Land: 40,000 Militiamen (armed with AK-47s, 40mm mortars, RPG-7ms, 57mm anti-tank guns and stinger missiles) 3,000 Mechanized Infantrymen (armed with AK-47s, 82mm mortars, RPG-7ms, 88mm anti-aircraft guns, M101A1 105mm Light Howitzers and M3A3 Bradley Light Tanks) 155 Challanger-II MBTs Air: 25 civilian prop-driven aircraft (converted for military survellience) Sea: 150 gunboats (equipped with 12.7mm machine guns and 90mm recoiless rifles) 1 Flower-class Corvette The Imam reviewed the map of the Cape Horn as the shelling got closer and the radio chatter became more and more erratic. He hadn't deployed his tanks, not without a steady supply of fuel. His best shot for success would be to keep the enemy artillery off of his lines with his own artillery and draw the enemy into an ambush along the main highway into town. With the mechanized infantry's 88mm antiaircraft guns, they could thin out the enemy's armor and approach his infantry lines without major problems. The other tribes weren't as mechanized as his forces, but they were more fortunate when it came to finding working tanks. However, seeing as their petrol predicament was the same as his, the Imam knew they could only deploy so much armor at a time. The Imam issued his orders to his lieutenants and then went to the top of the Mosque's remaining minaret (the other three destroyed by two close calls with enemy artillery) to survey the city and try and see for himself where the fighting was taking place. As night fell, the flashes from both sides' artillery grew brighter and brighter. Abdullah hoped that aid would soon arrive. |

"We require no help from infidels to secure our true and proper lands!" Imam Abdullah said in a radio address to the UNF. "The CNNP can aid our enemies and await the retribution of our one and true God!" "We accept the aid, if only to crush our enemies," Warlord Ahmed Aidid replied to the news of incoming CNNP aid. "We are severely disappointed that we did not receive aid, especially since we are in a position to win this war," Representative Mahmoud Abbas of the Western Alliance replied. "We will demonstrate our disapproval of the CNNP at a time and date of our chosing." |

The People's Republic of The CNNP has renounced support for the Imam's cause and has since then shifted support for the Western Alliance and Southeastern Front. This comes as The CNNP promises them all of Somalia and if they relenguish their goals of wanting the port of Djbouti. This comes as our nation desires peace and stability in the Horn of Africa; Secretariat-General João Café said "we will not permit an extremist heretical swine to cause problems in the Horn." This comes as Egyria showed concern for a potential escalation of the conflict. To which Berlusconi said, "the sheik does have any need for worry, although we understand his concern. Our concern is that this is a neighboring country and we must preserve the domestic security of our people. A faction showed signs of threatening that peace and stability." |

As the Prince of Sistan promised, Sistani supplies began to arrive by air the day after the UNF delegate returned from Iranshahr. At first, it wasn't much. A thousand barrels of diesel on one plane, several hundred crates of assorted ammunition in another. One of the planes carried equipment for setting up mobile field hospitals, while still another contained parts for SAM emplacements. Meanwhile, planes well suited for harsh conditions like poor fuel, crude runways, and close ground support made their way to Asherton. They were radial piston powered aircraft based at NAS Chabahar, the new B2K1 attacker/bomber, and the improved A1K2. They would be able to halt, or at least slow, any advancement on UNF holdings. As Sistani equipment and engineers flooded into UNF territory, forces began to prepare to mobilize at home. The heavy cruiser Sistan was armed, fueled, and recrewed after her first anual overhaul. Likewise, other ships in thr Sistani navy made the same preparations. Most importantly, perhaps, were the troop ships and supply ships being loaded at Chabahar. Though the Prince had told Lt. Ibrahim that they would not be ready for at least a week, it was a very conservative estimate. In reality, the bulk of the supplies, the naval support, and the ground forces would most probably be ready to leave by the next morning. Several miles down the naval facility's waterfront were the two mothballed Alvand class frigates and the four old Kilo class subs. They were also being refitted, and would be delivered as soon as they were ready. Public Broadcast, Sistani Television "The Principality of Sistan will not allow the CNNP or her allies to interfere in Asherton's internal affairs. Any breach of Ashertonian soverignty by a Catholic party will result in an immediate declaration of war. Consider yourselves warned." |

Presidential Address: These military forces are strictly to aid in training the Southeastern Front and Western Alliance. If the Western alliance choses not to pursue Djbouti City; they can retain those forces we have provided and the funds allocated. If not, we will withdraw and pursue further options. The Horn of Africa is vital for stability and being a member nation of that region ask Principality of Sistan not to interfere with a regional problem. |

OOC: Technically, from the Middle East map's point of view, the city of Djibouti falls on my side of the Gulf of Tadjoura. Looking at the Africa map, its too close to tell really. I'd need a second and third neutral party opinion on this. |

OCC: I don't know about that...it looks like it stops just after the Gulf of Tadjoura. All I know is, when my country was set up I was given Ethiopia and Djbouti (the countries). I would be willing to negotiate some sort of treaty recongnizing partial claim to the city of Djbouti. It could be like East and West Berlin...North Djbouti City and South Djbouti City. This doesn't have to be a big deal, but it does need to be addressed. |

OOC: Well going directly off of the map, I'm inclined to agree with Sistan. Who were you added by CNNP? If you were added by TC we can just talk it out and decide what he had intended. If you were added by Patrua before he left I'm not yet sure what I'll do. If this issue could be resolved IC that would be great too. |

That was my bad then, from the maps on the forums it looked like I had claim to the other side of Djbouti as well. I could build a city my own Djbouti City on my side of the claim. To Al Araam: To answer your question it was TC, when I was moved to the Horn I requested Djbouti (because of my navy) and Ethiopia. You still might want to ask TC what he had intended about Djbouti. But it was hard to tell from the view point I had. OCC: Sistan, how did you do that to the map? That is neat. |

I used Photoshop to blow up the African map 1000x, cropped out the area in question, repeated the process on the Middle Eastern map, pasted the ME map section to the cropped African map, and set the ME portion's transparancy to 50%. |

OCC: That explains why I couldn't do it, I don't have Photoshop. Executive Order 67: No troops of The CNNP may engage the enemy, they are strictly to help in training the Western Alliance and Southeastern Front forces. We will provide 25 billion francs for the said parties. Again, no CNNP troops are to engage...strictly train and supply. Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Carlos Menem has proposed a bill in the Senate to override the executive order and withdraw all aid and troops from Asherton. |

"Excellent, I'm very pleased with you Ibrahim," Abdullah said as he reviewed the conditions of the agreement between Sistan and the UNF. "We have the support we need to win this war, and then get ourselves back on track." "I am overjoyed to hear that, Imam," Ibrahim replied, thankful that he had not abused his power as a lieutenant of the UNF and getting on the Imam's bad side. "I am also glad our forces held out in my absence." "Not just that, but I want to show you something," Abdullah said. "We have word from our recon planes that the Western Alliance is sending an armored column against our positions. I want you to see what Allah inspired me with last night." The two men got into a car bound for the frontline, where their troops were concealed amongst the rolling hills and sand dunes around a major road. Enemy shelling had stopped, probably so that their advance would not be disrupted by their own shelling, or they might have run short of ammunition. In any case, the 88mm anti-aircraft guns were ready to attack, the anti-tank mines were in place, and the tank traps had been dug. As soon as the Imam and his Lieutenant had taken up a position on a hilltop to overlook the battlefield, the Western Alliance began its advance. "Cease artillery fire and await my order for AT fire!" The Imam called to his artillerymen, who were exhausted from an entire night of counter-battery fire. The enemy Challenger IIs rolled down the road in single file, infantry crawling over the hills in support of the armor. Men clenched their teeth and readied their weapons as the tanks got closer. 150m... 100m... 50m... 25m... The 88mm AA crews watched as the tanks began to emerge from behind a hill blocking the road from their view. They zeroed in on the vulnerable side armor and fired, knocking out the third tank in the column as the first two began to turret their guns to attack. As their guns readied to fire, they were hit from the opposite direction with PG-7VRs (RPG-7 variants for use against composite armor). Machine gunners began strifing the enemy infantry as the artillery restarted their bombardment on the approaching armored column and infantry brigades making their move towards the UNF defensive line. Tanks began to leave the road to engage their attackers, but fell into deep pits or ran over anti-tank mines. Tank after tank was now becoming unservicable, destroyed, or abandoned as the wholesale slaughter of Western Alliance troops continued. "Allah wu'akbar! Allah is great!" The Imam yelled as the Western Alliance began to flee, trying to cover their retreat with a half-assed artillery barrage that landed short, further adding to the pain inflicted on the tank crews as they tried to flee back to their lines. The Imam turned to Ibrahim. "While Allah smiles upon us, you shall proceed south with your infantry brigades and armor and attack the Southeastern Front. I want that bastard Aidid's head on a silver platter and I want his forces under my control... Don't destroy them, try and capture as much as you can. If they are true believers in the power of Allah, they will follow you." "May Allah continue to grant us the gift of victory," Ibrahim said as he got on the radio to call up his troops. It was the beginning of the Counter-Offensive, and a glorious day for the UNF. |

As expected, the Sistani military had been ready well before the one week estimate. It had been only a few days since the UNF delegate met with the Prince, but the navy was already on scene. Subs prowled the Arabian Sea and the coast along the horn like cats. A large flotilla of sixteen cruisers and thirty six destroyers, lead by the three Cascade class heavy cruisers Sistan, Zard Kuh, and Taftan. In the port of Bender Cassim, the fleet oilers Seychelles and Maldives were docked, unloading tens of thousands of barrels of fuel for the UNF and Sistani forces. A few piers down were the ammunition ship Kergulen and the hospital ship Mascarene. Countless other Sistani ships, mostly merchant vessels hired by the government to ferry troops, equipment, and supplies to Asherton. As soon as they were offloaded from their ships, Sistani ground forces moved to support their Ashertonian counterparts. Four ton trucks, nearly identicle to the ones used by the Allies in the second world war, flooded Asherton's road systems by the hundreds. They were packed with infantry and supplies bound for the front lines in both the south and west. Joining them were hundreds of tanks and armored personel carriers. The tanks were lead by Japanese Type 90s, but their ranks were filled by older Soviet models. The APCs were almost entirely Soviet BMP-1s. Though vulnerable to anti-armor weapons, they would hold off most small arms and small explosives. Capping off the triumvirate of Sistani support were the planes flying constant sorties over Asherton. Because it was assumed that enemy aircraft would not likely be encountered, most of the Sistani planes were cheap prop driven fighters and bombers that would excel in a close ground support role. The most numerous were the A1K2 Okikazes, an improved version of the A1K1 with two 30mm cannons and six 20mm guns that would shred anything that wandered into the pilot's crosshairs. Topping off the plane's offensive capability were four hardpoints on the wings that could each carry a 250lb bomb, and twelve rocket rails. After the Okikazes were the B2K1 Tigers, attack bombers based on the Okikaze with four 20mm cannons, a hard point on the fuselage for a single bomb or torpedo up to 3000lbs, and eight wing hardpoints that could each carry a 500lb bomb. Though they excelled at ground attack, the carrier based planes were capable fighters as well. Just in case enemy aircraft were encountered, a number of cutting edge A2M2 Talon fighters were also deployed to Asherton. Patrolling the skies with help from an E1M1 Sky Eye AWACS craft, the Talons would make sure that the Okikazes and Tigers could do their job of supporting the ground forces. |
