General Alak'os Dekul stood in the barracks. Behind him, soldiers went about their daily business, some stopping occasionally to look at the border with the other Stanistan, where enemy soldiers stood waiting for them to make their move. The phone rang.

"Polsë ré sak?" (What is it?)

"Mekæro da ré afolïn." (It's time, literally "the time is now".)

Those four words told him exactly what to do. He hung up the phone and called his assistant over to him, and repeated the words. Within minutes, all of the soldiers were outside. They stared at the soldiers on the opposing side, and they, back at them. General Dekul was in the midst of the soldiers, silent as death. The situation remained the same for a few minutes, which felt to him like several hours. Finally, he raised up two fingers. There was a bang, and the soldiers on both sides began to shoot at each other. The War of Vengeance had begun.

VPS News Report

The Very Pithy Stanistani army showed signs of strength in the first days of the war. The Pithian army, divided into 2 corps, made gains in both the other Stanistan and Anakolu. The two nations, ill-prepared for a war, struggled to combat the Pithians. However, the gains came at a high cost of life, with over 3,000 troops dying in the first few days. Also, the enemy nations, although they suffered losses on the battlefield, made use of their bomb stockpiles and began bombing several Pithian cities, including the city of Inderïn. Approximately 11,500 people died as a result of the bombings. The Governing Council is growing unpopular due to the high death toll so far, and protests have been a common sight. This is all for now.

OOC: A map is provided below. Orange represents enemy territory. Red represents Pithian gains. Green arrows represent movements of Pithian forces, while purple arrows represent movements of oppposition forces. Blue lines represent Pithian defense lines, and the gray line represents a mixed Neo-Macedonian/Norightsian defense line. Yellow X's represent sites of major battles. Major cities are also represented.

OOC: Who is this between?

OOC: It's between Very Pithy Stanistan and two countries I made up.

Also, why is the picture I attached showing up as a file to download?

IC: During the past few days, efforts of the Pithian soldiers have stalled somewhat. Most of the time was spent consolidating gains, moving defense lines, and the like. The discovery of a terrorist cell hiding in a bunker near the city of Revatonu was a major positive on November 26, helping to boost morale both on the battlefield and in Very Pithy Stanistan. Governing Council leader Palina Be'krela Gulendo hinted at the possibility that the troops may be going home soon, at the pace things were moving. She did not indicate whether Very Pithy Stanistan will seek to keep its territorial gains. That is all for now.

OOC: Right now this war is on hold. I haven't had as much time for this site as before, for a variety of reasons, so I guess you can just assume that the forces are holding their ground against insurgents who are trying to break through and regain land.

IC: Breaking News!

Suicide bombers have struck several shopping plazas in Areslé Zano today, a stunning break to the week and a half of relative peace in Very Pithy Stanistan. The 12 bombers, who appear to have planned the attack together beforehand, are of the Stan ethnic group, and attacked mainly Pithian sections of town. Official death toll estimates are not currently available, but emergency workers say the number could be several hundred. The bombings have sparked massive riots in the streets of several Very Pithy Stanistani cities. The police have had little success in quelling the riots. More reports will be made once available.

General Alak'os Dekul sat down in his chair. He was in his temporary office in the now-deserted city of Revatonu. Now he was getting ready to watch his favorite TV show, "Lufarë ré Gutol." His aide came in.

"Tir nala lusï eranæt!" (Look outside!)

He looked out the window. Outside, the scene was one of pure chaos. Windows were broken, cars were lit on fire, and looters were making off with various goods.

"Polsë ré watulese?" (What's happening?)

"Ma merka nit. Sak nala ungutol, dot." (I don't know. It looks bad, though.)

General Dekul ran outside. Immediately he and his aide were chained and put in the back of a truck. Where they were going, they did not know....

NMN: Neo-Macedonia News

Queen Chloe of Neo-Macedonia sends her heart felt apologise the the governing council of Very Pithy Stanistan for the lack of support for Neo-Macedonia in the past months as this war has raged on. She is deeply sorry that the civil war kept her from helping her ally and that while in power, the General did nothing to help them either. She assure the Governing Council that now that she has regain power, Neo-Macedonia will help where help is needed and do all that they can.

Yesterday, a mutiny occured within Pithian forces in Revatonu. The forces have taken General Alak'os Dekul hostage, and are holding him at an undisclosed location. It is not known where he is at this time. In response, the troops attacking the other Stanistan, in the south, have changed their aims to looking for the rebellious troops. The cause of the mutiny is unknown at this time as well.

The northern nation of Anakolu has announced its surrender to Very Pithy Stanistan. Under the terms of the peace treaty that was signed, Very Pithy Stanistan will absorb Anakolu, and the two nations will become one. Anakolan representatives are meeting today in Areslé Zano with the Governing Council to discuss the integration of Anakolu into Very Pithy Stanistan.

An estimated death toll for the suicide bombings in Areslé Zano has been set at 1,652. Rescuers are still recovering bodies from the sites, however, and the death toll may nudge higher. The rioting all over Very Pithy Stanistan has subsided somewhat, due to CENTO aid to Very Pithy Stanistan. An estimated 890 people were killed in the riots so far.

In a press conference today, members of the Governing Council thanked foreign nations for their help so far, notably Great Denizistan, Norightsia, and Neo-Macedonia. Leader Palina Be'krela Gulendo also expressed sympathy for Queen Chloe, saying that the Council understands their situation. Things look to become very interesting in Very Pithy Stanistan in the coming days, and as usual, we will keep you up to date with the latest news.

Negotiations have begun on the proposed annexation of Anakolu by Very Pithy Stanistan. The negotiators have so far been very secretive about the goings-on behind the doors of the Governing Council headquarters, but we have been able to garner information about the topics being discussed. Some of the prominent issues that will be resolved at this meeting include:

The Name: There is a great debate going on about what the name of the new nation will be. Pithians tend to favor keeping the name "Very Pithy Stanistan," but this seems unlikely, given that Anakolans are their own ethnic group, and will become prominent in the new nation.

The Government: At this point, it seems unlikely that the members of the Governing Council will keep their jobs after the merger. According the the leading proposal, the government would be led by a President. The structure of the rest of the current Very Pithy Stanistani government would be left intact, although there will of course be new elections. The members of the Governing Council are currently lobbying to be automatically admitted into the new Senate.

The Religion: One of the most contoversial subjects at this meeting is the debate over the future role of Catholicism. Most of the Pithian negotiators favor keeping Catholicism as the official religion of the nation. However, this seems unlikely, since most of the Governing Council, including leader Palina Be'krela Gulendo, favor turning the nation into a secular state. Others, primarily chief Anakolan negotiator Sawaan Myukyi, favor changing the official religion to Stanish Orthodoxy, which is projected to become the top religion in the nation after the merger.

The United Nations: Traditionally, both Very Pithy Stanistan and Anakolu have been skeptical of international organizations. (Very Pithy Stanistan's membersjip in CENTO being a notable exception) After the merger of nations, however, many people feel that Very Pithy Stanistan/Anakolu should take a greater role in world affairs, including membership of the United Nations. Right now it is almost certain that the new nation will apply for UN membership.

Negotiations complete!

In Areslé Zano, the negotiations have ended, and a solution has been found. A treaty detailing the agreement between the two nations was read today in front of the Governing Council headquarters. Some of the major points of the treaty include:

-The name of the new nation will be Mwanza Jamhuri. Its capital will be Maisha, a new city built on the northern shore of Lake Victoria between the two nations. The Very Pithy Stanistani flag will be retained.

-The new government will be headed by a President. His/her Cabinet will be elected from the Senate. All other aspects of Pithian government will be kept. Elections will be held in the last week of January; until then, Palina Be'krela Gulendo will be Interim President and the rest of the Governing Council will make up her Cabinet. The Senate of Very Pithy Stanistan will keep their jobs until the election.

-Both African Catholicism and Stanish Orthodoxy will be the official religions of Mwanza Jamhuri.

-Mwanza Jamhuri will seek membership in the United Nations.

In other news, Pithian troops looking for the mutineers have found them in a large cave only 75 miles from Stan City. A battle ensued, and neither side won a clear victory. However, General Ratan Mapalë, leader of the loyal forces, has been taken hostage by the rebels. None of the other hostages have been found as of yet.

January Reforms Announced

Interim President Palina Be'krela Gulendo of Mwanza Jamhuri has today announced the institution of the January Reforms. This set of laws, which is expected to pass the Senate by a large margin, heavily loosens the federal government's grip on the regions of the nation, leaving most matters to the 5 states. This will allow each state to choose its own official languages, religions, and form of government, as long as it is democratic. Only matters of foreign policy would remain with the federal government. It also imposes new regulations on industry, in order to better take care of the environment.

In other news, the search for the mutinous soldiers still remains unfruitful. There is a growing sentiment among citizens to give up and withdraw troops, but the government staunchly opposes this. Some intelligence sources say that the troops are in Stan City, but nearly no one dares to go into the war-torn city.

Also, the official list of presidential candidates has been drawn up and will be released to the public later this week. The date for the election has been set for Thursday, January 26. As always, we will keep you updated.

It is my unfortunate duty to announce that Norightsian soldiers can no longer take part in the manhunt in Very Pithy Stanistan. They are needed elsewhere, and can no longer be leased to the Stanish government.

"It is all right. We sincerely thank you for the help you have given us."

-Interim President Palina Be'krela Gulendo

Stan City, Stanistan

It was the dead of night. The streets of the abandoned city were silent except for the sounds of raindrops falling onto the streets and the drudging steps of soldiers through the mud. In a vacant building nearby, General Alak'os Dekul looked outside at the barren landscape. Behind him, the other hostages huddled around the coal stove, the only source of warmth in the room. Two guards stood at the door outside, preventing any movement in or out. "Oh God," he thought, "what did I ever do to deserve this?"

Meanwhile, a few miles away, just outside the city limits, the Pithian army was planning their assault. A scout was sent into the city to check where the enemy was located. He did not return. Impatient, the army began to march in. They did not know that a group of elite guerilla soldiers was waiting at the city gates, ready to ambush them.

To be continued hopefully soon...

The Pithian army didn't see what was coming until it was too late. The moment they entered the city, the mutinous soldiers came out in scores. From his veritable prison cell, Alak'os Dekul could almost hear the shock of the Pithian army. Before the army could respond, several of their number lay dead. More and more enemy soldiers popped out from the buildings and the alleys. The two guards at the door bolted, presumably to go fight with the rest of them. General Dekul waited to make sure they were gone, and then he and the rest of the hostages went out.

Taking an alternate route, away from the enemy forces, they soon got lost. After a few minutes of randomly turning corners, a band of five opposition soldiers burst out in front of them. Thinking quickly, he pulled out his rifle, and he and his fellow soldiers shot all of them, but not before he himself was shot in the leg. Undeterred, they struggled onward. After a few more minutes, Alak'os collapsed onto the ground. He could not move anymore.

Meanwhile, the Pithian forces, while greatly outnumbering the opposition, was struggling. The enemy proved skillful, and would not go down without a long, protracted battle. The band of former hostages, without General Dekul, found its way over to the site of the battle. They told Field Marshal Martesi Nerari about the situation, and a small group went off to find the fallen general.

They came over to the spot where Alak'os Dekul lay. He was still conscious, but only barely. They picked him up on a stretcher and led him to the battle. The enemy forces fought well, but the Pithians simply had the advantage of numbers. By then, the sun was rising. The streets were red with blood. General Dekul could not count the number of bodies that lay strewn across the gateway. For a moment, he forgot about the immense pain in his leg. He could only think that the nightmare of the past two months was finally over. Oklum da El'fërina had ended.
