St. Sidibie I Square, outside the Urban IX Palace

Thousands had come to gather around the St. Sidibie I Square. For some unknown reason, the Church had set it up and this only happened at important occasions. At the sides, the Cardinals began to file out of the Palace and sit down in their seats. Next to them were foreign dignatries, quite clearly African.

The crowds began to exchange opinions as to what could be happening. Then, during these vigorous discussions, the Holy Father was carried out into the Square and placed down at the top of it. The crowds all dutifully knelt and bowed their heads.

Posted Image

There was silence. Everyone waited for the Holy Father to speak but he did not, he did not even offer a blessing. People were very confused as to what was happening. But then, from the front of the crowd and man emerged forward. He was unchallenged by the guards.

He was dressed in plain clothes and looked like every other ordinary man. He walked up to the Pope and bowed low, not kneeling. The Pope stood up and got out a golden cane.

"On your knees Jean!"

The Emperor went down on one knee, his head still bowed.

"On your KNEES Jean!"

The Emperor looked up but then did as he was told, kneeling on both knees. The Holy Father continued to speak.

"Jean, you ignored my commands, my teachings. You committed violence against your fellow Catholics, innocents you murdered. You put the souls of many of your people who died during the interdict in eternal peril. You directly disobeyed me!"

Jean bowed his head low.

"I am truely sorry for my wrong doings, Your Holiness. All I ask is that me and my people be forgiven, my excommunication and the interdict lifted. My penance is real and true. I will do what you will."

The Holy Father stood for a minute, in silence and contemplating.

"As Catholics we are called to forgive those who sin and trespass against us. You have proven your penance and I will absolve you of your sins. You nation is out of interdict, you are received back into communion with the Holy Mother Church."

Jean looked up.

"Thankyou Your Holiness."

"I have not finished yet! Syawla will pay $1 billion to the Church. And, as a sign of your humility and subserviance to me, you will kiss the papal ring, the ring of the Fisherman."

Emperor Jean looked fine with this, it was quite normal. The Pope took of his glove and what Jean saw horrified him. The Holy Fathers hand appeared to be covered in plague. He resisted but the Pope held his hand out, the crowd could not see why the Emperor resisted.

"Kiss the ring!"

Emperor Jean, prayed that he would not get infected (OOC: which doesn't have to happen) and kissed the ring. The Holy Father then whacked the face of Jean with the cane, blood trickled from the Emperor's face.

The Holy Father fell back on his chair, the crowd seemed alarmed at this. Guards came running over and took him immediately back into the palace.

OOC: Wicked!

IC: Emperor Jean left Genesis City for the local airport. While his aids were busy dealing with his nose-bleed, he instructed his allies in the Imperial Senate to put forward a bill to produce $1billion dollars for his country's reconciliation with the Catholic Church.

And so, Syawla, only weeks ago accredited with causing Schism, was reconciled to the Catholic Church.

Syawlans given tax break

Content with the national security situation, the Emperor has passed through the Imperial Senate a lowering the level of tax throughout Syawla. In a statement, he claimed that he wished to reward his people for their support during these difficult months by allowing them to keep their hard earned gains.

Nationalisation of corporation responsible for social housing

At the same time, concerned at the sorrowful nature of social housing, the Emperor has forcefully confiscated the assets of the construction company Edgeware PLC. The company, which was hired, during the years building up to the Zimbabwean civil war, to build housing for the government, has passed into public sector control, after its executives were arrested, headquarters stormed, profits seized and shareholders had their shares declared confiscate. The Emperor declared that the act would precipitate the dawn of a new era in prosperity for the Syawlan people, and social housing more in keeping with the 21st Century.

Emperor's popularity sours

According to an online source, Emperor Jean has reached a pinnacle in popularity with the Syawlan people. This is accredited not only to the attainment of victory in South Africa, but also to the stability provided by his rule following previous months of turmoil. 84% of those questioned stated that they believed he was a good leader for Syawlans with only 2% believing Jean was a tyrannical ruler.

In celebration of his impending marriage, the Emperor has called fresh elections to the Imperial Senate, the first since the Revolution some seven months ago. The Emperor declared that "the time has come for the Empire to move from an agenda geared towards war and security towards one grounded firmly in modernisation and prosperity." The elections are scheduled for the week after the imperial wedding on October 11th. Though many of the leading politicians from Syawla perished under the Le Bon rule, a number of young thoroughbreds are emerging as potential statesmen.

The following political parties, banned under the regimes of Le Bon and Ruling Council have been permitted to stand for election, alongside any independent candidates:

The Christian Democrat Party for Prudential Government (Centre-Right) led by former preacher Antione Dubers,
Syawlan Social Democrat Party (Centre-Left) led by Patrice Delacroix,
The Christian Coalition (Far Right) led by Marie Rochefauld-Foucauld

The Emperor in a simultaneous move has created a second chamber made up of some 19 judges, who will have a role similar to the American Supreme Court, who will each be appointed for life by the Emperor himself. The Emperor retains the ultimate veto on legislation, however agreed to the dissolution of the Ruling Council which was set up in the Le Bon regime, and replacing it with a cabinet drawn from the majority party in the senate. The post of Imperial Chancellor has also been created and is to be bestowed upon the leader of this party. The Emperor said that October 11th would mark a great day in the history of Africa.

Elections for the Imperial Senate have begun in earnest with polling stations across Syawla opening today, with the expectation of massive interest. To clarify, the party with the most seats will gain a proportionate leadership of the senate, which will decide on most matters domestically. This same party will gain an equally proportionate majority on the Imperial Council, which will advise the Emperor who retains a veto on legislation and retains all powers to do with foreign policy and defence. The leader of the main party will be named Imperial Chancellor, and will lead the Senate, while at the same time sitting on the Imperial Council.

The three main parties are:

The Christian Democrat Party for Prudential Government (Centre-Right) led by former preacher Antione Dubers,

Syawlan Social Democrat Party (Centre-Left) led by Patrice Delacroix,

The Christian Coalition (Far Right) led by Marie Rochefauld-Foucauld, who, despite being arrested during the Schism, has once again declared loyalty to the Emperor.

The Christian Coalition (Far Right) led by Marie Rochefauld-Foucauld, who, despite being arrested during the Schism, has once again declared loyalty to the Emperor.

Polling stations have now closed and the votes are being counted. All three parties are claiming victory:

CDPPG Leader Antoine Dupers declared that if elected he will not seek to change the system, only to loosen out its irregularities with a hold on tax increases, making no promises on tax cuts and at the same time decentralising the bureaucracy to give greater freedom to public sector workers, teachers and doctors. On foreign policy, he stated that he would not try to convince the Emperor to withdraw from the Holy League, as he believed that Catholic nations should stick together, but stated that he would attempt to convince the Emperor of the need to change some of the Catholic Church's more extreme and intolerant doctrines from the inside.

SSDP Leader Patrice Delacroix declared that if elected he would increase taxes, and provide more money for public services, which would be tighter regulated in order to ensure the quality of service given by the public sector and its employees. He also declared that he would attempt to curb the powers of the Emperor. Diplomacy wise, he declared that he would endeavour to close off borders with South Africa. He stated that he would seek to expel the former Neo-Macedonian Queen Chloe and would seek closer relations with the government of General Hadrianus.

CC Chairman and Leader Marie Rochefauld-Foucauld stated that he would seek to cut taxes significantly and would fund the public sector by imposing fines on "schismatics, dissenters and heretics". He also declared he would remove all foreign workers and would permanently close off the nation's borders. He declared his chief concern in foreign policy would be greater alignment with papal doctrine and the organisation of a crusade on behalf of Queen Chloe against Hadrianus. He also stated that he would declare CENTO and all of its members to be permanent enemies of the "State and Holy Church" and would endeavour to destroy the said alliance.

Final results are not expected for a good 48 hours.

Our Government supports the Syawlan Social Democrat Party and its leader Patrice Delacroix. We hope that the SSDP can form the new government of Syawla, a government with whom we would undoubtedly enjoy more cordial relations than the previous one. However, we are ready to enjoy healthy relations with Syawla unless the far-right wins which would certainly not help ease the existing tensions.

Erman Oymen, Foreign Minister of Great Denizistan

The Emperor states that he does not believe such Denizistani comments to be helpful and in the spirit of relations between democracies.

Our Government precisely concurs with the Emperor in his views that democracies do not interfere in one another's affairs.
Precisely, Syawla is NOT a democracy, so that answers our question. Besides, we are supporting all moves that would strengthen the democratic processes in Syawla and we believe the SSDP seems the most viable option in that matter but as we said we are ready to work with any of those parties, albeit not the far-right party.

Erman Oymen, Foreign Minister of Great Denizistan

OOC: Erm, I think according to the UN, I am, so screw you!

IC: The Emperor does not appreciate Denizistani lectures on democracy, especially considering Denizistani history regarding self-determination in Maratanica and Akam De. The Emperor is pleased however to note a more co-operative tone to Denizistani relations, rather than their usual self-righteous belligerent overtures towards ourselves.

In a landslide victory the Christian Democrat Party for Prudential Government has claimed leadership of the Imperial Senate following the Syawlan senatorial elections. Leader Antoine Dupers was formally invited to form a government as Imperial Chancellor in the Imperial Palace this morning, in the aftermath of his party's attainment of 62% of votes in the election. After a formal meeting with the Emperor, Dupers led celebrations at his party headquarters with a speech to the party followers. He declared "This is a great day for Syawla. But the work does not end here. Today we must begin to take Syawla forward." Following victory he led the party in a recital of the national anthem and Imperial Oath before heading for a private thanksgiving mass and rest. His 13 fellow Imperial Council members (out of the total 20, not including the Emperor) have been named.

The victory has been accredited to relative Syawlan prosperity which many felt the SSD' promises of tax rises threatened. CDPPG alignment and support with the popular foreign policy of the Emperor has also been linked to the party's victory. With such a huge landslide, decentralisation of the bureaucracy and legislation linked to supporting married couples is expected to be passed within th next few weeks. While promising to support the important role of the Catholic Church in Syawla, at the same time, Dupers has promised to protect the rights of non-Catholics, something which he has been stringently attacked by the Christian Coalition.

The CDPPG trounced their nearest rivals; the Syawlan Social Democrats, who managed to accumulate only some 25% of the votes.
The Christian Coalition tolled some 7% leading the minor parties into third. The future of the respective party leaderships has yet to be announced, though they are expected to take up some of their party's seats in the Imperial Council, if they can survive as leaders of their parties.

Our Government wants to be the first one in congratulating the new leadership in Syawla. We renew our call for talks between both our nations on issues of common interest in the next few weeks. We believe such talks can and will be in the interest of both parties and of all everyone else as well.

Erman Oymen, Foreign Minister of Great Denizistan

The Emperor has agreed with the Imperial Chancellor that open, honest but cordial talks with Denizistan are desirable; if such talks are co-operative and based on the assertion that both sides views will be heard and understood. If such talks are, however, going to revert to the same old form of Denizistani self-righteousness, lecturing and intransigence, then the Empire has not the time to entertain such trivialities.

The most senior Syawlan medical experts and doctors have been rushed to the Imperial Palace this evening as the beginning of the Empress Lisa's labour has arrived. The Emperor himself has returned to the Imperial Palace where he is at the Empress' side. His executive powers have temporarily passed into the hands of the Imperial Chancellor Antoine Dupers. Despite stringent checks, the gender of the impending child still eludes doctors and so, with its birth imminent, the Syawlan people are about to discover everything about their future ruler.

The Imperial Chancellor has called upon all good Catholics to pray for the well-being of the fair Empress, the child she carries and for Syawla. He said that the Emperor and Empress's final orders before they withdrew, was for Syawlan troops to aid Queen Chloe in removing General Hadrianus from power once and for all.
