Cardinal von Ehrfuhrt of Saxe-Coburg addresses the Council:

His Holiness Pope Christiano VII has made a valid point. Catholicism has reached a crossroads. With many nations of the world still hostile towards our faith due to the War of the Dawnsian Succession, Catholicism must become more close-knit. We need to pull together to make our religion, the true religion, strong and able to overcome any obstacles in its way. I see only one solution to this. The Holy Mother Church must return to more traditional ways. The College of Cardinals must be reestablished. The very idea that the Papacy, a position whose occupant must remain celebate, is hereditary, has shown itself to be outdated. God did not invest the ability to serve as Pope in one family. We need to elect our Popes. The Cardinals must choose who is to be Pope. God will give us the ability to choose the right man to become Pope. Let those who are in communion with God choose who is to become Pope.

Cardinal Tigatsu Machiru from the distant Orient land of Kiru Tao stood to address the Council.

"I concur with Saxe-Coburg's most wise and humble Cardinal von Ehrfuhrt. The College of Cardinals needs to rebuilt. By this act, we will show the world that our religion can adapt past any complexity that God deems fit to test us with. The Cardinals must be allowed to elect the Pope as once we always had. This tradition must be reinstated."

OOC: My only objection to re-instating the college of Cardinals is that it will take too long to elect a Pope.

I don't wish to change my one day equals a year for the Popes because that is how I've always ahd it (and I'm quite resistant to change in general). If we did do the college of Cardinals I would end up making a unilateral decision as to who the next Pope will be and the outcome of the conclave. Because, don't forget, the Pope is not just a spiritual leader, he is also a temporal Emperor.

I wouldn't be against you deciding your own Pope, CE, after all, it is your nation. Perhaps when deciding, you could take into consideration the posts referring to the various Cardinals and their opinions.

The Pope isn't just 'related' to my nation, he is also the spiritual ruler of the regions Catholics and, in some cases, what he says takes precedence over their own rulers.

However, I'm liking the idea of me choosing from Cardinals. Perhaps we could have a 'Cardinals' thread, where people could post prospective Cardinals and their opinions etc.

*The scene if of a very large and grand hall. The roof is decorated, completely, with extravagant and detailed paintings of Saints, martyrs and angels in the Baroque style. Each picture is outlined by ornate wood covered in gold.

The walls too show pictures of Saints on either side, with statues of various martyrs flush against the wall. At one end is a huge wooden set of doors, encrusted in gold with various writings in Latin, all alling on specific Saints for their prayers. At the other end the wall is completely covered in one fresco of the crucified Christ draped in his mothers arms. It dominates the whole wall.

Inside the hall are rows upon rows of seats, each one taken by Cardinals, Bishops, Priests, monks and a few nuns, situated at the back. They all sit chatting until a large gong is sounded and out walks the Pope.*

My Cardinals, Bishops, Priests and religious brothers and sisters, may the Holy Spirit always be with you and protect you. May the Blessed Virgin, Queen of Heaven, continue to look after and pray for you, your flocks and the Holy Mother Church.

You may be wondering why I have called this meeting. Well, the third Catholic Council has been in session, with sporadic meetings, for a number of years now debating various teaching but, most of all, debating the question of the Papal Succession.

With my death will come a succession crisis if a solutionis not found for, under the teaching of Pope Cristiano V, a distant relative of mine, all those who succeed to the throne of St. Peter must be of the Blood Royal. Well, the time has come that God has willed for a change for once I die the Blood Royal will die with me and will be no more. Thus, under Pope Benedict XVII, this council was set up with the primary aim to find a solution.

After visiting many of the Council meetings I have come to my conclusion. I have spent many hours in devotion, prayer, pilgrimage and penance in hope of being given the correct choice by the Holy Spirit. My prayer was answered yesterday.

The ancient system of a conclave, abandoned a long time ago and last used for the election of Pope Urban X, is hereby restored. The princes of the Church, the Cardinals, will on my death and the death of every subsequent Pope, come together, here in Genesis City, where they will elect a new Pope from one of themselves.

Only those Cardinals in attendance may be elected Pope and only Cardinals under the age of 60 may be eligible for election. The successor of St. Peter will now be one who is chosen by the Cardinals instead of Gods complete will.

May the Holy Spirit in these conclaves fill each and every Cardinal with the correct choice and ensure that sede vacantism does not rule, instead allowing them to swiftly and quickly chose a strong, devoted and truly Catholic Pope so that the rule of my family will be carried on in all its splendour and Catholicity.

May the all the Saints, Holy Martyrs and Angels pray for you and myself.
