I've seen worse. Still, kinda shitty that when they decide to continue on it after this long, this is what we get. Eh, what can you really do though? |

Copy-pasted from my Dopey Discord page. It has been waaay too long since this page has posted anything even pretending to be thoughtful, and I had just written up this anyway, so why the fudge not? Chances are a lot of you have seen commercials for the new Teen Titans Go! show. And chances are if you have, your reaction was somewhere between "This is the stupidest fucking thing I've seen since Johnny Test" to "stabbing myself in the eyes with a fork was probably an overreaction on my part ow ow ow." True to pattern, whenever a show or movie or book or whatever gets rebooted for a new audience, people always bitch about it. Then people complain about the people bitching, then the people who like the new thing starts throwing the phrase "nostalgia goggles" around like that alone is some insurmountable argument, it all gets messy, and everyone still goes to bed a virgin. But in this case, I think that people are justified when they complain about what happened with Teen Titans Go. I think that the problem was that the original run of Teen Titans had content, style, themes, and direction that made it clear the show wanted to treat its audience with respect. Sure, there were the goofier moments, but at its heart it was like all the DC Superhero shows that came out during our generation like Justice League and Batman. It was a cartoon that treated kids like they were smarter and more mature than many other cartoons would give them credit for. The first show had issues like dealing with abusive or cold and distant fathers (Raven and Beast Boy), self-identity and self validation as a person despite differences or handicaps (Cyborg), being a stranger in an unfamiliar culture and often being taken for granted or thought of as simple (Starfire), managing guilt and overcoming self-doubt (Robin), getting your heart broken (fucking everybody), statutory rape (Slade and Terra--read the comics), the love between a brain in a jar and a superintelligent gorilla (The Brain and Monsieur Mala--actually don't read the comics that shit is weird) and plenty more. Sure, it was all beneath the goofy jokes about Beast Boy's vegetarianism and Starfire's eccentricity and whatever the hell was the deal with Mad Mod, but the show had serious content. This show... Well... They say you can't judge a book by it's cover, but that's not true. The point of the cover is to give you an idea what the book is about. If you want to read a book about dragons and you see a book with dragons on the cover, you're likely going to take a closer look at it. Here's some commercials for the original show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0I_qWhUz5bw Now compare that to the commercial for the new show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLIydhwBUR4 Forget everything you ever knew about these two shows. From these alone, which show appeals to you more? The one that shows off action, comedy, all while giving an insight into their characters and personalities? Or the one with HUGE CAPS LETTERS SCREAMING THIS IS ROBIN THIS IS STARFIRE DON'T RUIN HER HAIR THIS IS BEASTBOY HE SHAPESHIFTS AND IS GOOFY RAVEN IS CREEPY WITH MAGIC POWERS CYBORG IS JUST THE BLACK GUY WHO SHOULD GET OUT MORE. One of them acts like it believes its audience can pick up on subtlety and nuances. The other one does the same thing, to quote JonTron, if you spell "subtly" like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OS-mcZwqTYQ The new show simply does not indicate that it has any intentions to treat its viewers like adults and respect their intelligence. I think at the end of the day it all comes down to wanting something better for the younger generations. It's too common to hear people say like "If these kids are our future, we're doomed" "No hope for the new generation" And so on. Every generation says that about the younger age, it's nothing new. We want the younger generation to be more like us. And to that, we want them to have the same experience as us, because cultures are defined by shared experiences. "If you didn't watch Dexter's Lab you didn't have a childhood" "Only 90's kids will remember Bill Clinton getting a blowjob" And it's not always justified. There are plenty of things kids have now that I wish I had growing up, and there were plenty of things I had when I was a kid I would have preferred not to have. But in this case, talking about Teen Titans, that was something that can be safely called a positive experience for us. And when the opportunity came for the next generation to have a similar experience, something that could be shared, instead they get FAT BLACK GUY EATING PIZZA SHOW. It's not about us having "our childhoods ruined". It's about us feeling upset that what was once taught us life lessons has turned into just... obnoxious dribble. On some level, it's almost a sense of the older kids standing up for the younger ones. We're afraid they're going to grow up being treated like idiots, and what will happen when they've grown up. I'm not trying to say that Teen Titans Go! is going to directly lead to the world of "Idiocracy" coming to life. But it's all tied to that base instinct of people wanting to leave behind a better world than what we had. And a big part of that is the media children are exposed to. tl;dr you're a pizza shit Edited by Steev, Apr 24 2013, 10:15:08 AM.

That dude's giving the original Teen Titans a bit too much credit though. It really wasn't as "deep" as they're describing it. |
