Wonder which one I should pick for the third... as I can't find a torrent of Farewell to Arms... and I know what you're about to type, "TGG get off your lazy ass and just go to a library" but fuck that man I'm not going to be able to focus like that might go with the person changing into a roach story maybe |

Why in Azathoth's name is he a fucking bug anyway? It would've been more entertaining if he was a small bug and had to avoid being squished or eaten, like in The Fly. |

The author doesn't actually explain it at all up to the point I'm at. He just sort of wakes up as one. |

...you're...you're serious? That's... kind of retarded. 0/10 expected something more from a story that had its main character become a cockroach type of thing |

Him becoming a cockroach isn't the point of the story. It's how his family reacts to him being less than human. He lived his whole life as being less than human, never experiencing life for himself. He was a traveling salesman who was castigated by his family and forced to live his life for them. He never had any creature comforts, just his few pieces of furniture and his poster. He then desperately tries to hold onto what bits of humanity he has left. He tries to stop his mother and sister from taking his poster, but in doing so, he reveals himself to them and makes them believe he's a monster. In his attempt to remain human, he becomes a monster in the eyes of his family. He then ultimately loses this struggle to become human, losing himself and then being put out of his misery. Honestly, it's an amazingly powerful piece if you just read through it a second time. It's not meant to be an "entertaining" story. There's no big conflict or goal. It's a tragedy, a psychological work that makes you examine what really makes you human or not, and how people who supposedly love you would suddenly treat you if you became less than useful to them, or less than yourself. |

Doesn't change the fact that the premise of the story is boring and doesn't work if you don't feel sorry for a guy who randomly wakes up as an anthropomorphic roach or his family who only acts justifiably. That whole message is thrown way out there by the humanoid bug thing premise because it is such an extreme in that direction, it is only reasonable that a family would treat a roach-person-chimera like a monster, especially if they didn't like him as a human before that. It would've worked much better if he slowly descended into hardcore vice or compulsive homicide or some other bad habit that consumes you while not being stupid like magical bug curses for no reason. That book sounds more like a comedy than anything else. Besides, I don't know about you guys, but I could get the same thing out of reading some Nietzsche or Rand but it wouldn't be as boring or dumb in execution. I mean, killing him would be a merciful thing to do, since he couldn't function in normal human society without being ostracized or suffering extreme hardship throughout his life; he wouldn't know how to function as a roach-human and would scare people or be abducted by the government for science. ![]() Berfer, you're about to eat more shit than the last person in a human centipede if you don't stop talking like a retard like now. >boring >family acts justifiably Their sole source of support that lets the family live their lazy lives has suffered a horrible turn of fate, and they despise HIM for it. >don't feel sorry >premise is extreme in that direction It was an allegory for when Kafka was layed up in a hospital bed and his family didn't want to take care of him and he felt like he was treated less than human >dumb in execution You have some major testicular elephantitis saying that about Kafka where I can see it |

Calm the hell down, man. It's just a difference of opinion and if you feel differently then respectfully tell me why, you don't have to go and treat it like I was personally attacking you. If you called Ayn Rand a bitch or Andrew Jackson an arsehole then I wouldn't bat an eye and ask you why you think that. They despise him for spontaneously turning into a chimera-roach thing for no reason other than shenanigans, would you ostracize or be the least bit scared if your roommate turned into a goddamn animal thing one night that you have no idea about its state of mind or its motives? Honestly? The guy wasn't forced to support them, he chose to because he valued his family having a nice standard-of-living in exchange for his own time and labor, if he didn't then he would've told them to fuck off. The family acted reasonably in the face of an unfamiliar situation. As for the allegory thing, that doesn't matter in the context of the story and his family seems like they're arseholes. That whole thing is unfortunate, but it doesn't make the story better regardless of the hardships faced by the author due to circumstance. And yeah, I genuinely think that having a story about a roach-man transmorgified from a salesman is a bit dumb, you may think otherwise, but that's my opinion.
