The classics are used because they've been out so long analysts have been able to pick it apart word by word, making them a great way to showcase literary devices, hidden meanings, and alternate interpretations. And they're not "terrible;" they were the cream of the crop back in the day. If they were terrible nobody would pay them any mind.

The problem is that the modern generations are a very different audience from those in their heyday, and what was great back then is unappealing to us. The AP course could do for some more modern novels.

Don't read Farewell to Arms. I have read fucking The Sun Also Rises which is also by Hemingway, and sat through all the monotony of the Scarlet Letter, and I could not get through Farewell.

It's a different sort of monotony than Scarlet Letter, where there are these really long (as in paragraph long) lists/sentences with all these random useless terms and descriptions separated by nothing but "and," with no commas whatsoever. This got to the point where in one instance two of these consecutive terms were "green branches and green leafy branches." Seriously, just the same thing again but with "leafy" stuck in there.

Of course I know that this writing style is the whole point since Hemingway was a nihilist and all that, but it certainly didn't make for a great novel. Once I was halfway through I had to just skip to the end, and suddenly everybody was hemorrhaging and then it was over. So here's the whole book for you: Many things happened but they weren't very interesting, World War I was horrible, and then everybody hemorrhaged and it ended.

If you ever get the chance, read Crime and Punishment, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, or All Quiet on the Western Front. Those are worth reading--Got to read all of those when I took AP English 4 and the class actually didn't suck as a result. Now that I actually have the time, I'm going to be reading The Brothers Karamazov at some point this summer and see if it's as good as I think it is.

I'd recommend Heart of Darkness, Hedda Gabler, and The Metamorphosis. Not only are they fairly short, but they are very easy to analyze once you start following a train of thought. Trust me, I had to work with nearly every one of those stories in my AP and college English classes, and those were the ones I enjoyed the most.

Though it could just be that I love nihilist works and Kafka is one of my favorite classic authors, but The Metamorphosis is really a wonderful piece. Hedda Gabler is also interesting, so I can guarantee you won't get bored. Finally, Heart of Darkness is a little tougher (or it was for me), but ANYTHING is better than the Scarlet Letter.

And as for The Awakening... That one's a gamble. It's very good, with plenty of areas for analysis, but I just could not stand reading it.

Haven't read any of those but as I have AP English III next year I can probably expect at least one of them on a summer or year reading list.

How could I have forgotten Dostoyevsky? Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov are great books, All Quiet on the Western Front is too.

Right now I'm reading A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving(English class required reading over the summer as usual)

I actually like it, though that might just be because of Owen Meany's character.

Oh Christ.

That story has no fucking plot until Chillingworth shows up. But I did pretend Dimsdale was that giant retard Dale Dim from Fairly Oddparents.

Chillingworth
Incidentally this guy is one of the most unintentionally (I think?) creepy characters I've ever read. He comes off like a serial rapist/murderer, pedophile, and the sort of guy who tortures people in his basement all at the same time.

I loved Chillingworth. But he was absolutely meant to be creepy as hell. He's constantly described in a way to make him compared to a leech and other parasites. He's as sketchy as they come.

Chillingworth doesn't sound like the name of a creepy fellow at all. I bet he's just a nice guy with a sense of humor that'll kill ya.

Chillingworth is one of only two characters in the book that I found at least somewhat interesting, the other being the bastard child Pearl. And Pearl's only interesting because she's a bit touched in the head.
