Yes, going to college is important nowadays because there's a good chance that even the somewhat decent careers require going to college arbitrarily; which I also think is bullshite. If one needs special training or specialized knowledge to build a house or be an electrician, it would take them a year-year and a half tops. Doctors and theoretical physicists are a bit different, requiring lots of information for an knowledge-based field; but for the most part, it simply is unnecessary. The reason for all of the jobs requiring college nowadays is the fact that college degrees are like any other kind of commodity: when there's more of them and almost everybody can go, the value goes down and it is required more due to the low value. Most jobs arbitrarily requiring college is plain ol' bullshite that unfortunately seems to be accepted. Cost of living rising higher than wages is mostly inflation due to the government printing money and fractional-reserve banking, and is not going to be fixed by getting a shiny piece of paper that you spend four years of your life to get. As for the work-study and internship stuff: you don't really need to do that for most jobs, it just isn't and should not be required in most fields. This relates to my earlier point that if you're going to be a doctor or something then sure, go ahead, but if you're going to do something that could be done with less just as well, then it is a gratuitous waste. I think someone should go to college for any or all of these three reasons, and not because they think they should or are pressured into using four years of their life for something they may not truly want: 1. The person loves learning, and wants to be exposed to new ideas and debate ones they disagree with. 2. The person loves drinking booze and socializing, which is a big part of college and growing-up. 3. A person needs special training or extensive knowledge for a job they absolutely are sure of, and even then it depends on the job for how long they're there. The "better" colleges essentially teach the same information no matter how much money you throw at it. The "reasonable" class sizes you mention are more of a personal preference than anything else, and the teachers being professors in their field doesn't mean that they're smarter or that they teach better, it means that they studied for longer. I do not know what "strong student community" is, so if you would be kind enough to define that for me, I would appreciate it. Your last point in this paragraph is addressed above. I'm glad that you agree that not everybody has to go to college, but you do so for different reasons than I do. People are pressured way too much to go to college and treat it as the be all, end all factor in their happiness and success in achieving their own values, when it is not. College doesn't guarantee intelligence, nor success; and people such as Nikola Tesla, Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington didn't go to/finish college. The college system itself is fucked-up in numerous ways, and these are some. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUDAxWlNrQ4&feature=relmfu Edited by lordberfer00, May 7 2012, 08:34:35 PM.

If anything professors are worse because they almost always have tenure and then they turn into dicks because they know they can't be fired. Sure, the younger professors can be cool, but when you've taught retarded boozed up college kids for forty years, you probably start plotting on how to make their life miserable. |

being accepted by a college means shit if you don't have money if I don't get the scholarship I'm aiming for then I probably won't even go unless my family somehow pays for it either way, I'm probably going to be under a bridge like Berfer but the difference is I'm going to be constantly writing shitty stories and trying to get them published. Though there's the chance I actually might get published, but me becoming a bestseller author? PSHAW! meaning my house will most likely be a cardboard box in either route I'll make a writing desk out of tin cans the royalties will buy me soup, beans, paper, and pens. |

I'll be right there writing shitey stories too, mang. Maybe not too many novels, but other stuff. Nowhere to go, nothing to do. Born in the gutter, live in the gutter, die in the gutter. Oh well. |

You guys have no ambition. At least try to die under a decently sized bridge if you're stuck on the bridge. |
