As you may or may not know, I am a junior in high school. Which means one thing specifically: I had to take the ACT. My parents have pounded the fact that this test is going to be one of, if not the most important tests I'll ever take in my life. If I flubbed on this, then I could kiss my chances of getting into a good college good-bye. This is the results of my less-than-active studying before the ACT. Spoiler: click to toggle In case the above picture wasn't obvious enough: Spoiler: click to toggle Life goals: -Do good on the ACT:

![]() I went through a similar scenario last year, though with less worrying. Very little studying, go in, take test, score 30+ around the board (except the essay). |

All the SAT and ACT do is help predict if you are likely to drop out or not; as such, I do not know why people these days put so much stress on their kids/selves about college when the education in two places is apt to be the same relative thing, save for the name on the tag. It's like buying expensive jeans from one of those "classy" places instead of just wearing whatever. It's bullshite. Anyway, nice score + minimal effort= good in my book. |

Actually, if the ACT scores are high the more likely the colleges I'm hoping to get into will accept me. So I'm probably going to end up taking it twice, though in all reality I actually am not even required to take it once but hey |

Yes, exactly. The "good" colleges, that are actually just the same shite as the other places but with a better reputation, don't want many dropouts, so they want people with high ACT or SAT scores because that is what those tests quantify, basically. |

Regardless, I'm trying to get into college any method other than having my family pay out of their ass to get me in. So obviously the ACT is one of the things I need to do... |

One reason for all the college pressure is that without a college education it's difficult to get a job that can adequately support you without a degree. With the cost of living rising higher than wages, most jobs that yield a comfortable income require a degree. There's also the fact that you can get involved in work-study or internship programs to not only get some early experience and even make money, but it gives her a higher likelihood that that company will hire you once you finish your education. You can't get that kind of deal with a high school education. And the places with a better reputation do have reasons for it, namely teachers who are professors in their field, reasonable class sizes (as in under 30 students per class), and a strong student community. And you're not just taking all those core courses for the fifteenth or something time; you start doing intensive studies in your desired field that become more specialized as the years go by. However, I will agree that the price tag on a college education is bullshit, as is the notion that "everybody has to go to college". Some people just aren't fit for it or just don't care if they live in the poorhouse for all their life. |
