Bunnie was knee deep in her studies. After the war she had taken up to reading and learning. Being a child of war and having to "grow up fast" didn't offer her much for what would come after the war: life. Rather than go to the university she decided to learn her own way- at home. The best way to learn was also to just do it. A good lesson even if clumsily taught. Her robotics were always an ongoing lesson in and of themselves. She'd given up on hair dressing- the southpaw (or the steelpaw as some would say) made her formerly nimble fingers thick and oily. Now she was trying to make the most of her mind. What she'd do when she "grew up" was still beyond her current knowledge. But for now atleast getting down math, science, and history seemed to make sense.

A glance at the clock on her desk told her it was almost 8. The doe smiled. She shut her book and headed for her kitchen. The kettle was put on for tea.

Bunnie knew Sally wore a thick crown these days. Maybe even more so than when they were younger. Now she had to maintain order rather than try and create. Bunnie felt a little guilty too- Sally and Sonic had gone on and done much for the world while she sat at home and did nothing. Her main hobby was painting when she wasn't sitting in a library or sitting at home reading.

Bunnie glanced at herself in the mirror. She frowned at the rabbot reflected: Droopy ears, hand imprint in the fur on her cheek, same belted purple bodysuit she had on earlier. "Well if it isn't miss spring chicken." She reached down and undid the belt, unzipped the back of her leotard and threw the material into the hamper. She ran the cold water faucet to wet a wash rag. Bunnie cringed a bit as the cold rag pressed on her belly and then around her body.

She threw on some shorts and a loose shirt. The doe quickly decluttered some of her living room; placing books back onto the shelves, stacking some of her paintings against the wall, throw pillows into the "Ah'm havin' company and don't wanna look messy" position. Bunnie lit a candle to make the room smell less like Bunnie and more like peaches.

Her living room was simple: Couch against a wall, love seat on the side, table placed neatly infront of each. Her bedroom was in the next room and the kitchen faced the living room. Her desk and bookshelf nearest the window by the kitchen. A simple apartment. Bunnie did miss her old bedroom though. She still had the big ruffled bed but the canopy was too large to fit in her current bedroom.

Bunnie glanced at the clock on her desk again: 8:07. "She's late. Musta been a hard meetin'."

She sat down on her love seat and tucked her legs up. Maybe it was time to get off her butt and do something. Sally seemed to need some help. "Guess we'll hit Sally up fer a job or position. Maybe time to take that "Lady in waiting" stuff seriously."

(( Sally's runnin' hella late, lol. Anyway, I wanted to wait until "Meeting" progressed a little more, but meh. Might as well get this moving. ))

8:07.

Oh, how she hated being late for anything! The Queen was used to being unnaturally occupied with multiple tasks, certainly more than one of royalty, let alone a single being, should handle by themselves, but that had never deterred her sense of time. She'd like that blame that factor on age, but she wasn't that old. It's just with the meeting and the incident that had occurred at the library... after such a long period of peace, such -what was the word...- unbalance sort of threw her off.

And that wasn't even including the peculiar dreams she's been having.

Walking briskly into the heart of the courtyard, it hadn't taken Sal long to reach the rabbot's humble home. A small, warm smile graced her beautiful countenance, a nostalgic feeling filling her chest. There was a time... when everyone used to live in normal huts such as these. And now, look at me. I live in the royal palace. Although, that was already destined. As a princess, she often lived amongst the normal citizens of her kingdom, but she couldn't elude her duties. Not that she ever do so knowingly. But absentmindedly...

She rapped a quick rhythm upon Bunnie's door, patiently awaiting her friend to respond. Yes, they were best friends, but she never felt comfortable simply barging into her friend's home. That was just rude! "Bunnie? Bunnie, are you there? I'm sorry that I'm late... things ran over, I'm afraid..."

A knock at the door. The rabbot was relieved that Sally actually came over. Deep down she really hadn't expected it. "Just a minute, Sug!"

She tried not to stampede to the door, and the metal did little to hide her footsteps. Once more she glanced into the mirror. "Alright." She was embarrised to present herself as if she was doing her laundry but she knew if she looked comfortable then Sally'd be comfortable. And since no one bothered Bunnie much then it'd hopefully hit home.

A very tired and worn out Sally-girl was waiting on the other side of the door. Without saying a word she hugged her friend. "So glad you came." She held for a second and then let go. "Well come on in, Sally. Ah been so lookin' forward ta seein' you."

She moved aside to let the chipmunk through. Just by glancing Bunnie could tell it'd be a long conversation or two tonight.

"Sit down, Sugah, Ah got some tea brewin' up, your favorite if Ah remember right. Dang it's been so long Ah sometimes plum forget mah head if it weren't screwed on just right." She tried to be joyful like old times but Sallys demeanor was telling her that tonight wouldn't end in laughter like the old days.

"Go on, have a seat. How's business doin' ya these days?"

A faint grin graced her lips as she heard those distinct metal steps make their way toward the door, already stepping back a little to allow room for the door to open. That soon widened to wide smile, the Queen instinctively embracing the rabbot as soon as she opened the threshold to her humble home. Admittedly, Bunnie did look rather relaxed - perhaps a casualty that was suited for her personal preference- in her current state, but Sally consciously appreciated it, whether it was purposeful or not. It provided her with a satisfying sense of comfortably and hospitality, of which only her best friend could provide to her in her own unique, desirable way.

Just as soon as they hugged, they separated, the chipmunk casting her a weary smile. She could only hope that her tiredness wasn't too evident. She rolled her eyes playfully at her comment, chuckling softly. "Of course I came," she murmured reassuringly. From her tone, she sounded like she expected her not to show up. This hurt her feelings a little. How could she even fathom such a thing? Yes, she harbored great responsibility as the presiding Queen of Portal, but she would always try to, especially when asked, make room for her friends! "I told you I was coming, didn't I? You know me, I would never go back on my word, Bunnie."

She nodded, stepping into her house just as the cyborg stepped aside. Immediately, she caught a whiff of the tea being brewed in the other room. My favorite, indeed. Smoothing out the slight creases in her purple dress, Sal took a seat on the couch against the wall, leaning back relaxed against the soft cushions. Cobalt eyes glistened with thought, she glanced briefly around the room, a nostalgic feeling swelling in her chest. Reminds me back when we all lived in Knothole. During that time, havoc still wrecked, thanks to Robotnik's tyrannical deeds, but the village still provided her with a relative abundance of fruitful and notable moments that was destined to last a lifetime.

...

Her expression faltered unfavorably at that thought. Oh jeez, I sound old...

Sally furrowed her brow, resorting back to her solemn mood, only emitting a deep sigh in response to Bunnie's inquiry. "Business is... good. For the past five years, the kingdom has been at peace, so I can't complain about that." Her gaze travelled to the full bookshelf standing against the opposite wall. "Although, today has complicated that sort of..."

"Complicated? If'n we're at peace how complicated could it get?" She stopped mid stride, "Sonic. Forgot about Sugah-hog. 'Course it'll get complicated if he's involved. He wouldn't be Sonic if it wasn't somethin' a messy goin' on. Is this about you're vacation he was goin' on about?"

Bunnie handed Sally her tea. "Now if'n you're hungry Ah do got a little nibble stuff hidden away but Ah'm watchin' mah figure. Just cause the legs can lift a ton don't mean they should be attach to heafty Bunnie." She laughed nervously. Her figure was still a bit of a sore subject deep down.

The cyborg flopped down as easily as she could into a chair. Again, she was conscious about the last chair she broke when all of her weighty cybernetics tore the fabric and bottomed out her favorite chair.

"Well Ah don't wanna poke mah nose in where it don't belong but then like we evah followed them kinda rules. Spill it. Whats the gossip. AND YOU HAVE TO TELL ME! Tha best Ah get these days ain't even worthy ta call gossip. Ah need somethin' Ah can atleast hold onto for a few minutes. Besides, ain't like there are-a that many people Ah could share with these days." Bunnie pointed to her books, "them's mah friends now." She tapped her brow a few times, "Finally started doin' what y'all been sayin' Ah should do and gettin' some book smarts."

She was good at reading Sally. She looked older than she remembered. Yeah, she WAS older, but back in their hay-day they atleast looked (or she recalled them looking) their age. She couldn't be a day or two younger than Bunnie was. But she looked like she was gettin' gray uptop a little or atleast starting to turn. Her posture was still rigid, royal, elegant. A look down at her own said she was still a bit of a country girl.

"Quite complicated, actually," Sally replied, shaking her head slowly. She chuckled slightly at her mention of Sonic, resisting the urge to roll her eyes just at the thought of him. "Oh, believe me, I know. He's practically part of the definition. And..." She sighed, poking her tongue in her cheek, as if in thought. "He just brought the idea up out of the blue-- no pun intended. And, really, I shouldn't be surprised. I mean, he's never been predictable. Although, while I have been pondering the thought, that isn't what's been bothering me."

Graciously, the Queen took the tea offered to her, stating her thanks before sipping it with precision. "You always did make the best hazelnut tea. Not that the tea they serve in the palace is bad, but nobody could ever top yours." She smiled warmly, watching as her friend flopped - albeit somewhat awkwardly - into her favorite chair. Sal was aware of the rabbot's sensitivity when it came to her figure, especially in regards to the weight of her cybernetics.

She cast her friend a reassuring look, retaining her genial expression. "Your figure is fine, Bunnie, don't worry about it! You've never been one to pig out on food deliriously anyway... that was always Sonic's job." Another chuckle emitted from her lips, this one more hearty than the last. Always the nosy one, she was! Of course, it was regulation to speak of the matters she dealt with outside of the qualified personnel... but this was Bunnie, after all. The whole "I-have-to-follow-protocol-thing" wouldn't fly with her, and she knew it. "Gossip? Hardly." She shook her head once more, shrugging. "Did you hear about what happened in the library this evening. There was a break-in, according to NICOLE and Geoffrey. It was unclear what their purpose were, but it resulted in a dead girl and a ruined book. Try piecing those together."

"Thanks, Sal. Ah know Ah don't pig out or nuthin' but Ah got what you'd call a gross tonnage. Sometimes it can't be helped." She laughed a little. This was what she'd been missing out on. Someone who she could joke with and someone who could joke back.
Then came the "news", "Sweet lord, Sal. That's horrible!" She looked astonished. "How did she die?" The doe shook her head. "That's just plum awful. Is y'alls Geoffrey gonna figure out who killed the girl or does Nicole already have them undahwraps?"

The idea of someone dyin' on Sal's and Sonic's watch was disturbing. "Ah thought this was a nice neighborhood these days, sheesh- kids dyin' now?" One quick look would say thats what was eatin' Sally. "Thats got y'all a little upset, don't it?"

She stood up, "Alright. Ah got just the thing to ease you back a little then." The rabbit did a little sping step into the kitchen. There was some clanking noises and then a thump. Bunnie came out holding a lightly tinted bottle of greenish clear fluid. "Now Ah know we ain't supposed to be drinkin' but a little white ain't gonna hurt none." She smiled. "But it's already seemin' like one of them kinda nights."

The alcohol had a bit of an effect on her nervous system: if she consumed too much she would lose function in her robotic parts. However splitting half a bottle with her best friend wouldn't hurt her in the least. Bunnie presented Sally with a new coffee mug. "Sorry bout the stemware or lack thereof." She poured the mug about half full. Then she poured herself a half full mug. Again she awkwardly flopped down into her chair.

"Heres to bettah days, lord knows we thought these would be them." Bunnie declared aloud, holding up her mug towards the chipmunk. Bunnie took a sip of the wine. "Alright then. Thinkin' on y'alls little problem- y'all got you a dead girl, a ruined book, and our skunk hunk doesn't have any idea as to whats going on? Hate to say but it sounds like either y'all are missin' a clue or two or you'll just have to wait and see what happens later on."

"So, Sal. Ah gotta ask, girl to girl. What do y'all think of ol' Antione? He's gonna be helpin' me a little get some book smarts. Y'all can think about this later on, but Ah know that as queen an' all that stuff y'all need advisors an' people that can help out. He's gonna be helpin' me learn a little so ah can apply for a position in y'alls what-evah-you-call-it. Ah ain't tryin' to sound presumptuous or nothin'. Ah ain't beggin' niether. Just tellin' y'all what mah li'l ol' idea is and more importantly- about Antione." Bunnie gulped down some more wine, "He an' Ah had a little swim today, he said he'd help me become more of a lady- well, it kinda hit me that he's kinda, well, cute."

A little light-hearted humor never did any harm. Sally supposed that she could allot more time for such pleasantries. Certainly, the throne didn't call for stoic, monotone behavior. Not that she had ever reached that state (at least, she didn't think so), but... she could abide to the rules and have some fun, too. ... Right?

Of course! The world was at peace, for goodness sake.

The chipmunk chuckled slightly, in a faint sheepish manner. It scared her to think that... she might take after her late father more than she would like to believe. Sure, the previous King, before Elias of course, was a formidable ruler and definitely respected and beloved throughout the kingdom, but there certain aspects of his character and reign that Sally just did not agree with. Disagreements that were deeper than the typical "father-daughter" conflicts. 'Demanding' and 'irascible' certainly didn't fit Sal's being, but, she did have the notorious habit of delving too deep into her position-- rather, she always took things too seriously. Too seriously. Way seriously.

It was different back when Robotnik was running amok. Now, however...

Sally frowned, her expression downcast. "We're... not for sure." She shook her head too. "The investigation regarding the matter is currently underway. Geoffrey or NICOLE will be getting to me with their results as soon as possible." Raising her head a little, she exhaled a deep sigh, furrowing her brow as she glanced back to Bunnie. "It's definitely bothering me. I'm not for sure if the girl died here or not... either way it's disturbing. The prospect of murder occurring right under our noses is completely unacceptable." Another sigh. "Nevertheless, we can't afford to lose our cool. Something tells me that that incident is a prelude to a series of future explicit events." Yet another sigh. "And now there's this vacation, and the meeting hardly went as I intended ..."

"Alright. Ah got just the thing to ease you back a little then."

The rabbot stood up, heading to her humble kitchen with a little spring step. Sal sat up some, a relief from her somewhat melancholic position. Once again, she couldn't help but grin a little at the lively, rambunctious noises emerging from the kitchen. What was she up to now?

Cobalt eyes widened in bemusement at the sight of the greenish clear liquid in her friend's grasp, shaking her head already in protest. "Alcohol? Oh, no, no, Bunnie! I couldn't...!" She pursed her lips in uncertainty, reluctantly taking the new coffee mug presented to her.

Come now, Sally. Don't be such a prude.

Shrugging off her doubts, the Queen dismissed her apology, holding her half-full mug in her hand. "There's no need to apologize, Bunnie, you know that," she stated, smiling amiably. Upon her declaration, Sally too rose her mug, taking a slight sip of the wine. "Indeed." She had already said all that needed to say regarding that.

Idly pushing a few loose strands of hair back underneath her crown, the chipmunk listened intently to her best friend, her grin becoming much more... knowing. Taking another quick sip of her wine, Sally shook her head, leaning her cheek onto her palm. "You mean our Cabinet? Or the Council?" She chuckled. "Why, Bunnie, I think that's a wonderful idea! Although, if you wanted a position in the palace, you know you could have easily asked Sonic or I. We would have gladly granted you a formidable position. Regardless, I respect your intentions. I'm sure Antoine will help you in your endeavor-- even if you are quite the Southern Belle, already." She paused to giggle a little before continuing, her expression now coy. "Speaking of Antoine, Bunnie, what's with the sudden interest? If I recall, I remember you saying that he wasn't your type."

I'm sure Antoine will help you in your endeavor-- even if you are quite the Southern Belle, already."

"Sal, Ah ain't sure what a cabinet or a council even is. See?" She tapped her skull, "y'all know Ah wasn't exactly the bookworm you always were. Besides, you know askin' for a handout ain't exactly mah, how would you say, style?" She wasn't shy about her own cup of wine and gulped a little down. "But if y'all got somethin' for your best friend that won't get y'all in trouble then Ah won't turn it down. Ah just don't want y'all to get backed into a corner lookin' like y'all are grantin' favors for friends- y'all got the same issues with appearances as Ah do."

"Speaking of Antoine, Bunnie, what's with the sudden interest? If I recall, I remember you saying that he wasn't your type."

Bunnie almost snorted as she took in more from her cup. "Ah seem to recall y'all sayin' the same about ol' Sonic." She put a finger to her cheek, "Let me see. What was it now? "Bunnie I don't know how that dumb ol' hedgehog is still alive and if he is I will kill him!" Ring a bell?" She stared right at Sally, "Antione though, Ah do feel like Ah gotta come clean. He's different. Saw him at the pool earlier. He's different. And Ah ain't gettin' any younger. An' if ain't as if there are that many single guys around these days. What, we got Rotor, Tails, Geoffery, and thats about it, huh?" She paused for a moment, "Oh Antione- If he's interested in the goods then Ah'll see where it goes. That is if he likes girls like me. Ah couldn't really get a feel for it, y'know. He chased after you for so long it's felt kinda weird havin' the attention on me. Lord knows if he an Ah do start datin' or doin' more our kids would have the worst accents around!"

Bunnie reached for the bottle and poured herself more. "How about you and Sonic, eh? When do Ah get to be an aunt? Or is that what this get away of yours is gonna be about? We never really ever did talk about it. Guess it was 'cause we were kids ourselves but y'all do wanna be a mom, right?"

Bunnie couldn't help herself. "Ah've always had a few... esteem issues what with the accident all them years ago. Sure it came in handy. But Ah don't know if Ah wait much longer Ah'll have a good enough shot at startin' mah own little life up. Hate to say it but it gets lonely a little just sittin' here studyin' on mah own. Maybe Antione will help me make those nights not so long. If he's not interested... well Ah don't really wanna think about that."

A small frown formed upon the rabbot's response, shaking her head lightly before taking a small sip of her wine. Yes, Bunnie was her best friend, but she would never just give her a position. That would be an insult to both her and the kingdom. While she harbored some (unneeded) self-doubt toward herself, she still possessed an admirable integrity about her.

"Well, we wouldn't be just 'handing' you a position, Bunnie," Sally retorted, speaking in a genial, matter-of-fact tone. "I'd have to check, but if there was something available that suited you, then I wouldn't hesitate to give it to you. Give yourself some credit. The palace is aware of your abilities and what you have to offer." The queen leaned over, placing a comforting hand over hers. "Most importantly, Sonic and I trust you. And if the Council opposes us, then we'll argue on your behalf. You're worth it."

Retracting her hand, Sal leaned back against her chair, casting the rabbot a playful sour look, cheek in tongue. Nevertheless, she rolled her eyes, emitting a quiet sigh. "A bell that's all too familiar..." The queen murmured, grinning somewhat nostalgically. She was grateful for Bunnie continuing on about Antoine before she allowed herself to get lost down memory lane. Her cheeky expresssion gradually dissolved into an admirable, genial as she watched her best friend talk, noting the genuine feeling in her eyes. "You really are falling for him, aren't you?" Sally inquired, softly. She giggled. "I can see it all in your eyes, Bunnie. You--

Her amiable response was skewed by what the cyborg said next, jaw nearly dropping to the ground in blatant shock. Nearly. "Hardly. We're getting away for a well-deserved break." She paused for a moment, bowing her head slightly so that her voluptuous, auburn curls shrouded her contemplative face, pursing her lips. "Besides, we haven't really discussed... that. ... I haven't given really given it much thought." They have certainly aged from their rebellious teenaged selves, yet such talk of having children still had yet to surface in their conversation. Eventually, Sally acknowledged, she would have to conceive and bear a child as heir to the throne. However, that issue was for a totally different occassion.

"Never mind me, Bunnie, this is about you," the chipmunk shook her head slolwly, dismissing her previous faltering. "I'm not sure what his 'type' is either, but who's to say that you don't fit it? Spend more time with him to ensure your feelings for him. I'm sure that he'll be willing to help you; you know that he's quite the gentleman. And, maybe, a certain passion will blossom between you two." She added with a passive, confident grin, "I believe in you."

She was quite happy with the prospect of being a adviser of types or what-have you for Sally. "Swear to the gods, Sal Ah've been goin' plum crazy just sittin' here readin'. Ah know its fer mah own goodbut still. ah'm ready to get out." She didn't mind the wait or having to be approved to help out Sally and Sonic. Her level of trust in their abilities was beyond words. She still felt a debt of sorts to the both of them for saving and helping her rehabilitation. Sally was the only one who knew how bad it was back then when it happened. Every time she woke up sobbing in the middle of the night or accidently destroyed something Sally was there for her. Every time she gave up trying to function Sally forced her back to her feet. Every time the pain was too much Sally was there to help her get through it. Bunnie knew if Sally said something would happen then it would and that was all there was to that.

"You really are falling for him, aren't you?" Sally inquired, softly. She giggled. "I can see it all in your eyes, Bunnie. You--

"Ta be honest Ah think so." She nodded a little. "Ah can see him doin' a few of the same ticks that he used to do when he got flustered real hard aroun' you." Her eyes darted down, "You know that, er----um... I'm not exactly confident when it comes to... certain things, uh, Sally." Bunnie pushed herself deep into her chair trying to hide some of herself.

The conversation continued on- She saw Sally cringe a little when she brought up starting their own family.

"Hardly. We're getting away for a well-deserved break. Besides, we haven't really discussed... that. ... I haven't given really given it much thought."

Bunnie reached over and poured Sally more wine. "Oh come on Sally. Y'all can't tell me that stuff about you an' Sonic gettin' married for public relations and the good of the people. If all y'all wanted was to start up a government then the titles wouldn't mattah. He's still Sonic. Ah'm impressed y'all got him to slow down long enough to put one of his gold rings on your finger." Bunnie lay back into her chair.

She took a quick glance over Sally, again, to size her up. "Oh it's okay if y'all go off on a "well deserved vacation" and fool around. Sally! You're married! It's okay now! If you don't think you're ready for a family then you're not but that don't mean you two still can't fool around."

"Thanks. Ah've always trusted in that if anyone could trust in me it was you." She again looked down at her over sized metal feet. "I'm really hopin' that we'll be more than friends though. Its time by mah watch to either settle down or... well I don't exactly know what."

She now had a low tone, the same tone she would take when things got serious. Her thick accent faltered into a thoughtful but soft voice. "Privately I've always never thought of myself as desirable. I know what I have, er- the normal parts- is desirable but... well... you know. My confidence isn't what it should be for a girl like me. The idea that the possibility exists that he'd be willing to look past that. Well. It excites me and terrifies me at the same time. Ah used to sit there and watch our little Knothole love birds flutter around the place. I wouldn't call it spyin' or anything but there were a few nights you left the lights on and I could see you and Sonic foolin' aroun'. I was so envious of that." She clasped her hands together and placed them in her lap. "It's so... excitin' to think that this guy may be fallin' for me for whatever reason. It's a good workout too that he'd help get me ready for a real job-job kinda thing. But it's so scary to think that he may forget that Ah'm not normal. Will he be okay that Ah leak oil? Will he be okay that Ah weight almost three times what he does? Will it be okay if we got married? Ah don't even know if Ah'm really all there or not. We didn't have a real doctor-doctor back then. Hell the only two people to ever see me naked are you and Rotor as mah mechanic. Ah'm terrified to go to a doctor even now."

She looked up at her friend. "It's an awful lot to take in, y'know?" She took a deep breath. She suddenly looked terrified. "Oh mah stars. Sal! Ah am so sorry ta be dumpin' this on you. Y'all were the one Ah figured needed some talk and here Ah am just diggin' my own grave.
