Hershey sat watching the clock. 3...2...1... Explosions rocked through the compound as another mission was checked off as complete. She radioed into Tower her coordinates as an Overlander modified Apache flew over dropping down a ladder for the cat to grab onto. She watched the base burn as the helicopter gained altitude and started flying west. She would have to push back her thoughts as to the casualties left behind. It was for the sake of protecting Mobians right? It was for the sake of the Kingdom. She had a debt to the House of Acorn, a debt that needed to be paid. She would do whatever it took to do that. She climbed the ladder and buckled herself in putting in the earphones of her MP4 player letting the music drown out the horrors below. |

He hated having to have two sides on this one. He knew intimate relationships were hard in war but it was even worse when you ranked much higher than your spouse. "Okay Hershey, we have target confirmation on destruction. Return to base and report to your field supervisor immediately for debriefing." He waited for her confirmation but one never came. She was still obviously mad at him. "Radio silence is no way to score points with your air traffic controller," he sang playfully into the headset. The only confirmation he had that she was still there was a small blip on a computer screen. Still nothing came over the radio. The skunk frowned. |

She heard the faint familiar voice of Geoffrey over the headset, as she was jabbed in the leg by one of the other GUN operatives. "You gotta call cat." He said gruffly. She took out the headphones. "Sorry sir, I am on my way back to base now." She said quickly, before cutting the call short. The pilot had to make a quick evasive maneuver to avoid a barrage of anti-aircraft missiles shot up from some obscure location in the foothills. Hershey was blinded for a second by the bright explosions, and the helicopter rocked violently tilting dangerously from the shockwaves. She hung on, knowing full well the possibility of bailing out into enemy gunfire. The pilot was able to bring the helicopter around, and evade the attack, at least that's what they thought.... Hershey glanced over her shoulder to see a single missile heading straight for them. The pilot tried to evade it, but he miscalculated the trajectory, and the missile made contact with the back propellor. Hershey was thrown out of the exploding vehicle and found herself tumbling madly through the air surrounded by debris of the helicopter. She wasn't alone the other ops managed to escape, at least the ones that survived the explosion. She free fell before snapping open the parachute strapped to her back and using the tethers guided herself away from the wreckage and into the forested valley floor below. Her chute snagged on a tree and ripped as she fell. She swung grasping for anything that would give her a handhold, securing a branch she sunk her claws in and clung on. Then, she pulled herself atop the branch. She released the chute leaving the remains fluttering in the tree branches above her. She looked around. It wasn't too far to the ground, but she had no real idea as to where she was. She needed to regain her bearings and get in touch with HQ. She tried her radio, but the signal was dead. She tried her communicator, but still nothing. She even tried the long range walkee talkee, but still, nothing. Frowning, she looked around. She was in a forest. Possibly part of the Great Forest. She just was not sure exactly what part of the forest she was in. It took her a good fifteen minutes to make her way down the tree, then landing softly on the ground she used the compass on her watch to find magnetic north. She knew GUN HQ was west, or was it east? "No, it must be east." She thought to herself. "It was by the sea." |

The commander hated this shift. He hated being the watch commander. He liked field work. He belonged out there and being in the fight. But now they were short staffed so he also had to double up as a sergent or gunny rank would be assigned to do- radarscope. The tea kettle started to simmer and whistled to Geoffrey to come and fix his tea. The radar showed the multiple target blips on the screen racing towards the helicopter contact. A small roll of steam wisped its way across the cup and milk was poured on top to bring in the flavor. There was a small red flashing light on his console. The siren that would accompany it had been taken for some other part due to cutbacks. The selection of biscuits was limited. He favored raspberry or a tart pastry but the only thing that managed to catch his attention after a few minutes was a butter cookie. The flurries of blips faded from the view screen. Geoffrey put his cup down and the plate with his snack on it, looked at the screen seeing nothing, and replaced his head set. "Okay, what ever it was I did I'm sorry but you don't have to dip below the radar just to ignore me." He waited for a response. The red light was still flashing, "This is Commander St. John to GUN carrier, please respond." Still no response. His gut told him to request a spy plane. "Gun flight, this is control command, please respond." |

She would start heading east. Keeping an eye on the sky, she was not sure how far out she was, or how deep into enemy territory she had landed. She ran on through the forest, she had to stay on her toes as she had no idea what traps could lay in wait. Perhaps she should have been faster, but it was too late when the string snapped. She heard the swift rush of wind as something very heavy seemed to swing through the air. She turned just in time to see a huge log littered with steel spikes come swinging from the tree canopy towards her. She threw herself onto the ground seconds before the massive thing soared past her. She waited a moment for it to swing back, which it did, but the force of the swing caused the chain to break and it fell onto the ground behind her, and started rolling towards her. She jumped up and started running, the entire time looking for an escape. She skidded to a halt as the ground gave way to a deep copse, lined with rocks, and broken trees, a small waterfall tumbled down it sending a fine mist up the ravine. She turned to see the spiked log had lodged itself between two medium sized trees. She took a moment to gather her wits, as a dull groan and splintering of wood alerted her to the imminent danger behind her. She took a chance and jumped out of the way hanging onto a tree limb as she watched the log crash into the rubble below. Hershey scrambled and checked her compass. She was still traveling east. Before her was what appeared to be a series of hills. Perhaps if she could get to the top of one, she could signal for help. She started her ascent, the whole time avoiding the main path but taking alternative routes through the forest picking her way along the old trails. Her instincts honed in to detect any strange movement or scents around her. The forest thinned out at the top of the hill, leaving only a grassy top dotted with a few large boulders. She tried her communicator on her watch and this time, had luck. "Geoffrey!" She said happily. "Geoff... I mean Commander St. John," She corrected herself, such informalities were not appropriate when on duty." We were ambushed, the copter is down, I'm not sure the casualty count. I'm sending you my coordinates." She said relieved. |

The commander spent the next few minutes after the helicopters signal disappeared going over scenarios in his head. Their last spat had left him not wanting to appear to be over protective, but the last time Hershey had gone missing it had not ended so well. He wanted her to start listening to him. Finally the commander put aside his feelings and went with his instincts, "This is Commander St.John, request stand by alert aircraft be airborne within the next few minutes. GUN carrier fails to respond. Transfer coordinates for search area into flight computer once airborne." Some squeaky voiced recruit "Aye aye Captain," bled over the radio. "It's COMMANDAH yew bleeding moron! I'm no stupid captain!" He kept his eyes on the monitor. The feeling of impotence overcoming him. Finally her voice rang out. "Thank the gods, Hershey, are you okay?" He shook his head, of course she was. She would have said if she wasn't. "I'm getting a rescue ship underway right now." |

"I am now sir." She replied over the communicator. She kept her eye to the sky, and soon a small black dot grew larger in size to reveal a GUN chopper flying her way. They lowered a ladder, and she once more scrambled up. The chopper did not waste any time but flew swiftly back to base. Once there, she immediately went to the command station where she stood before the Commander to report, and wait for a debriefing. "Mission completed as ordered." The rebel military ammunition warehouse has been destroyed along with the factories surrounding the area. Unfortunately, they had some new smart missiles which took out our escape. As far as I know, I am the only survivor." She said cooly, staring ahead into the map pinned onto the wall, covered in various marks and location pins. She could not look him in the eye. If she did, she would betray the relief she felt to be back on familiar ground. She waited patiently to be excused to return to the barracks, and prepare for the next mission. |

Geoffrey nodded and shut the door to his office. "We failed to estimate their technology upgrades or if they found a new source of part or are outright stealing their weapons." He walked around and looked at the cat, "Now I'm not going to lie," he sighed, "I've never been comfortable with women in my outfit and under my command. Especially one I share a relationship with. It makes my decisions harder. The fact you are pregnant also complicates my matters more. For the time being I'm removing you from infantry status. We are still short staffed so," He couldn't help but chuckle, "You may have my place at the radar console until further notice. Dismissed." He was lost for words, He didn't like doing this to her and knew it'd land him in the dog house but it had to be done. Edited by St. John, Feb 24 2010, 10:10 PM.

She did not look at him. She would not look at him, instead she saluted, turned on her heel, and left the room. She punched every locker on the way back to the barracks. Her frustration being taken out on the inanimate objects, rather than on any unsuspecting new recruit. She slammed the door behind her, and flopped down onto the bed glaring at the ceiling. He grounded her! How DARE he! How DARE HE ACT LIKE SUCH A.. she fumed quietly to herself. Then reason returned to her. That little voice of responsibility which reminded her time and again, that she was not just thinking of herself now. She had someone else to consider. As he did too. "Guess this what they mean by sacrifice." She thought, her temper calming down dramatically as it had flared up. She rolled over onto her side and stared at the wall tossing around her options. |

He could hear the punches from down the hallway. He knew he'd be sleeping elsewhere tonight. she'd most likely hang him for taking her off of active duty. He returned to his paperwork. He hated filling out paperwork. He had given his Radar duties off to some overlander he had been forced to take into his command. He tried not to think of him disappointing her. It wasn't happening though. She lived to be on the go. She wasn't happy unless she was about to get her tail shot off. Why was she so reckless? Couldn't she see the benefits of knowing that there is a limit to how far one can go before its insane? She was carrying their child after all! When would she wake up and realize her limit may have been maxed out? |

She waited for him. Strange, but her anger had melted away. She got up, made herself a cup of hot cocoa, and sat down in front of the TV. She turned it on, and started to channel surf. It would take some getting used to, domestic life. She looked around and started picking up laundry and throwing it in the hamper. "Guess will have to make a trip to the GUN laundry room." She thought. Then she began to clean. It was weird how when she was nervous, upset, or worried about something, cleaning took her mind off of it. It was a distraction that provided a moment for her to relax, then readdress the issue at hand in a calmer state of mind. She dusted, she vacuumed, she cleaned the small kitchen until the countertops shone, and the chrome sparkled. She scrubbed down the bathroom, and finally mopped the floor in the kitchen area and bath. Satisfied with her work, she stripped the bed, turned off the television, and hauled the laundry down to the GUN laundromat along with a bag of quarters. Once more, she flipped on the TV in the relatively quiet room. She was alone, which didn't bother her at all. She channel surfed and stopped on some Overlander daytime talk show. "The Miki Rake Show... Overlander, Mobian love triangle!" The television blared out over annoying music. She was thankful the washing machine was obnoxiously loud. |

The commander stayed in his office. He still had too much paper work to do for his overlander overseers. It had been hours since he debriefed Hershey when he walked through the door to his apartment. He had almost forgotten they were living together now, but he could smell her sweet scent when he walked through the door. He was unsure of if he should say anything. They had both agreed to leave work at the door but that didn't always happen. He could recall the numerous times work hadn't been left at the door and had become the topic of their dinner conversations and a few arguements. Maybe he was too traditional and she was loo liberal. The commander in him felt women didn't have a place in the infantry. Females were better in the war as medical personel or in the safer jobs they had; like Radar operations. However he didn't dare argue that they were short staffed. Regardless of his feelings about the Hedgehog Geoffrey knew they needed good soldiers on the front lines fighting the good fight. However he wanted desperately for those good soldiers NOT to be his wife. "I'm home," he said rather timidly. |

Hershey finished up the laundry, and piled it into a clean hamper. She opened the door, and came in, laundry piled high up over her head. She put the hamper onto the floor. "Hi there," she said cheerfully. |

The commander had kicked his boots off and left them under the bed. He was knee deep in nothing and almost relieved that the missus wasn't home when he got there. He full expected her to decapitate him for busting her down to doing mundane work. He would have done it to anyone else that had a biological issue that would put them or anyone else (not yet born or otherwise) off active field duty. He knew deep down she would make this personal. It wasn't like her NOT to make it not personal. She was a very free and very liberal minded free spirit. She had cleaned the whole apartment from top to bottom. It wasn't a good sign when Hershey "found" things to do. He knew he'd be sleeping in his office tonight. "Uh, Hi there, yourself," he said quite nervously. He'd make the most of it and deal with the fall out. |

Hershey watched the skunk visibly jump a bit when she said hello. He seemed unusually nervous around her. She set the washing down and started sorting through it, remade the bed, fluffed the pillows and began putting the clean laundry away. "What's a matter with you? Cat got your tongue?" She asked presently, when she heard the skunk's nervous reply to her greeting. She walked over to him and stroked his cheek. "Look, I had some time to think about it, and frankly, I really do appreciate what you are doing for me, no, for us. I mean, this is part of being a parent right? There comes a time when we have to make sacrifices. You know, for the future." She leaned in and gave him a quick kiss on his cheek. |

Geoffrey nodded. "Sacrifices yes. I was afraid I'd be walking into my own sacrifice- as in my own execution." He smiled weakly when she kissed him. "I know how important your work is, Hersh. Anna to let you know I'm not just bustin' you for that but any woman who be with child under my command. We can't win this war and take back our lands without numbers and I do desperatly want our children to have a future. We can't do that without making sure that there are children to have a future with." He sighed, "I donna like being you're superior, Luv." He got up and began helping Hershey with the laundry. "An I don't like you doin' this either. Go sit, stay off your feet. You've had a long day, what with gettin' shot down. Now you come back an clean the whole place?" He picked up the cat and placed her gently on her side of the bed. "There, my princess. Just rest there." He leaned down and kissed her forehead. "Can i get yew somethin'? A food or a drink? A book? Perhaps a story?" |

Hershey looked up into his clear blue eyes. When he admitted he did not like being her superior. Her heart melted when he praised her on her ability. She could not help but smile when he shared with her the truth behind his decision, and she respected him for it. She let him take her to the bed, wrapping her arms around his neck as he did so. Her fingers ran through his soft fur, as she clung to him. She nuzzled the nape of his neck as she purred with satisfaction. "No, all I want, is right here." She replied, as she cupped his head in her hands and pulled him into a passionate kiss. |

The skunk smiled when she kissed him. "I can go an get yew somethin' if you need it. Just say the word and I can bring you the world." He got up and began to wrap Hershey into a blanket tucking the edges around her legs taking a time to feel the limbs to see if she was injured. Once satisifed that she was going to stay warm and in bed he gently lay himself down on his side of the bed. "Ye did a wonderful job cleanin, heh." He didn't want to talk about work. |

She curled up next to him, pulling the blanket over both of them. The hour had gone quite late, and she was very tired. All she wanted, was for him to hold her through the night. To listen to his heartbeat, and know that he was there. It was a simple desire, and one that she knew he'd gladly fulfill. She felt the softness of his chest, and the steady rise and fall as he breathed. She giggled softly as his whiskers tickled her cheek, and purred deeply rubbing her head against his, her cheek against the soft fur of his throat, and her head under his chin. "Just stay with me." she said softly, "that is what I want." What she really wanted would have to wait, as exhaustion both physically and mentally took over and she fell into a deep sleep. |

He wrapped his arms around her and held her close to his chest. "Aye. I will be here." He rubbed her hair and patted her back. She soon was snoozing. He spent the next hour just watching her sleep before he too fell into sleep. |

Hershey woke up and nuzzled against Geoffrey's cheek. He had been with her all night. "Good Morning," she whispered. She got out of the bed, showered, and dressed. She wrapped a towel around her hair and started making breakfast. It was a novel idea, making breakfast. They had a canteen that provided the meals courtesy of GUN, but she did not feel like going down and having to deal with semi warm scrambled eggs, dry toast, and bacon that was more fat than meat. So, it was ....frozen waffles, fake maple flavored syrup, and a toaster. The coffee was fresh, and she started the machine which hummed as it heated up to percolate the coffee. She found some plates and plastic cutlery, paper towels would have to suffice for napkins. |

Hershey grinned when she saw Geoffrey roll over and bury himself under the blankets. She walked over and crawled under the covers with him tickling him in the side before kissing his nose gently. "Are you hungry love?" She asked sweetly. She ducked down pulling the covers over her head and curled up so that she was looking eye to eye with him, and nose to nose. Her tail flicking thoughtfully behind her, as she felt more like a kitten than a full grown cat. She playfully batted at his fluffy ear, murring softly. The aroma of freshly brewing coffee filled the room, along with toasting waffles. Even if he wasn't hungry, she sure was. Still, she felt reluctant to leave him when he was looking so cute. Then something mischievous came to mind. She grabbed her phone and ducked back under the covers. He was still asleep to her relief, and she snapped a few pics of him. "Keep these for later." she mused with a wicked grin. |

The skunk snoozed. Winter had been setting in lightly but the cold outside always made him want to sleep more. Primal instincts one could guess. The smell of coffee tickled at his nose. He liked the smell, didn't like the taste. He could feel the cat playing with him. "Do we have any tea?" came from the lump under the covers. "I'll take a tea an a bready thing to eat if'n we have one." |

"I think so." she said softly. She climbed out of the bed stashing the phone away, before rooting through the cupboards for tea. No luck, with a sigh she would venture down to the canteen and get a large cup of tea, an assortment of biscuits, and a danish or two then returned to the room. She set the tea on the small table beside their bed, along with the small plate of biscuits. Then, she poured a cup of coffee for herself, ate a waffle, as she flicked on the tv and watched some Overlander talk about the weather, general Overlander news, and to her surprise no mention about the previous attack. She frowned at the tv deciding she did not care for Overlander news. So she flipped the channel and watched Overlanders talk about bizarre Overlander traditions, and sell things. |
