Hello once again, I promised to bring you coverage of my national championship a while back, and now here it is: The event structure was 6 rounds(3 rounds of standart & 3 rounds of draft), then a cut to the top 8. My first round was against white weenie, I easily overcame it 2 games in a row, since I play maindeck comdemns & day o' j's, it was a player from France who knows & playtests with Wafo-Tapa personally, so it was an interesting game. In game 2 I got short on mana, and he started to build his army, the I finally top deck a land, and play wrath, followed up with Jace TMS. Round 2 was against Splinter Twin Combo + turn 3 overkill, let me explain, the creature he played costs 2 mana, is red, has 1/2 and when you cast a sorcery or an instant spell, it gets+3/0 until the end of turn. Why am I explaining this? Because I dont remember it's name( so he casts probes, preodrains, bolt and double strike for 1 red on turn 3, I had nothing. Game 2 was won by playing 2 batterskulls, and having a full hand of counterspells. I lost game 3 to splinter twin combo on turn 4. Round 3 was against Vampires. You all know that Vampires have risen, and became one of the best meta decks, but I still can't lose to them, caw blade is just much stronger, plus I have main deck comdemns and wraths, 2 batterskulls and alot of card advantage. So game 1 was 2 batterskulls, game 2 was gideon, jace, 2 mystics etc. Then we moved to draft: I started picking white & artifacts in the first pack, and some flying creatures for phyrexian mana + my first pick was dismember over everything else. When I opened pack 2 I saw Mirran Crusader. Pack 2 was kind of meeeh overall, but still I got some good fliers, artifacts and more white cards. I really like white in this format, I won 3 drafts in a row by drafting white this season, + used alot of different card combos that no one else would play, and managed to succeed, but that's another story, back to pack 3: I got some origin spellbombs, oh and btw I played choking fumes, it's a great underated card. So I decided to splash blue in my mono white, and I went 3-0. I really didn't see any threats from my opponents, I saw a tezzeret, which found nothing, and I killed it. I played against mono black infect, and used mirran crusader. So overall the draft was easy. I also played vivisection, since I had alot of creatures, and 3 cards for 4 and a token or a infected creature ? Yes please ! Back to top 8: format - Standart. The top 8 decks were: 2 Caw Blade 2 Vampires 1 Elf deck 1 Mono red 1 4 CC 1 UB Infect I got paired up against vampires, and I was pretty shocked when I lost game 1, I needed a basic land to keep the tempo, and I got none in that game. I won game 2 & 3 easily though. Next was Mono Red Burn, which was a really hard match-up, game 1 was 3 mystics in a row, game 2 was: 4 againt 7 life with an empty field and an empty hand, I drew 2 flashfreeze in a row, and he drew 2 lands. the game was pretty much over then. I went to finals for a mirror match against a player who held caw blade for the first time in his life, ttrying to convince me that caw blade is really simple, and takes no skill to play. I lost 2-0, he had turn 2 mystic in both games, while I had nothing except for lands and jaces, which I could play until he was tapped out, but that didn't help. The other players told me that he top-decked like god the whole tournament, he made really big misplays and mistakes during the tournament, but his top-decks kept him ingame. Still, 2nd place is not that bad for someone who plays magic less than a year. After the banlist becomes active in 10 days, I will play Bant-control with Cultivates, birds, explore, mirran crusaders and turn 4 sun titans. I will post my new decklist later, until then, Amethyst. |
