What does it take to win? "The best deck obv."- answered 95% of the people at my locals. Well, during autumn/winter 2010/2011 the format changed, and so did the cards, so you could say that they were right. I play yugioh since 2003, and started MTG during summer 2010, so I know a little about the card games and high level tournaments. I watch alot of tournament videos (magic ofc), and have learned alot from them, for example: the blue/black control piloted by Wafo-Tapa and his friend Matignon, which got them into the finals of the world championship inspired me, and I haven't missed and FNM since then. I often compare magic with yugioh, yugioh takes knowledge of the format, money and partially skill to win, ut it mostly depends on the cards you own(then again, money), while magic has the same rules (skill, money, knowledge) ALL decks have a chance to win, for example Elves can beat Caw-Blade 38% of the time (that's 38 games out of 100). Luck is also a deciding factor for most games, the upcoming Pyro-Twin deck (that can kill on turn 4) is about to be born, and it really depends on your draws, since it needs 2 cards to kill you off before you can do anything. If you open with those 2 cards, there's a 90% chance that the game is yours. The deck is pretty solid, I ordered one myself yesterday, and 52 cards(the 8 new cards are from NPH) cost me 65.50. That's what I call a budget deck. Now everyone has a chance of playing with a good deck. Since I love MTG, even though I still consider myself a newbie, I went to GP Barcelona. The format was standart, and since I only play standart I had to go. The full trip was about 700+ euros(including tournament fees). I got there on friday, just in time for the lats GP trial series and entered one. I was piloting my won version of Caw-Blade. It was pretty much like all the other blue/white decks, but my "tech" was main deck condemn (which GOD saved me SOOO many times). My first game was a success - I was up against a russian player(I'm russian myself btw), and he played a blue/white soldier control version featuring unified will. The deck was quite strong(it looked horrible on paper though, then again, so did Caw-Blade). I only remember the second game, when I had a rachet bomb on the field with 2 counters. He has 2 soldiers with a mana cost of 2 and two lands untapped. It was turn 4, I tapped out to try to resolve a Jace TMS , he activated unified will and I chained rachet bomb. BANG! He scoops. The second match in the trial was a mirror. I lost the first game, won the second. We started the third game, and after a few turn time was called. I had 19 life and he had 20. in 5 turns the player which has the most life wins. turn 3 he resolves a sword. turn 4 I draw- Devine offering !!! While still at 19/20 , if I activate it now while hes tapped out, I win without doubt! I proceed to tap my mana, when suddenly he untaps and draws. I'm like wait a second - it's still my turn! Judge was called, he told that I said GO! and after 20 mins of argument the judges ruled in his favor. I was upset, because I clearly won that game. But oh well... on to the next trial... I spent the whole day trying to win myself 3 byes, but I never got passed my 4th opponent in any trial, but I played alot of interesting games and learned alot about the decks that I was going to play against tomorrow and my own deck. After a good night sleep it was time to play in the main event. My first game was a disaster, I played agains Naya(white-green aggro), and lost 0-2. I had a chance in the second game, but I misplayed, equipping a hawk over playing wrath, while he had an ornitopter(or w/e it's called), which I didn't see. Loosing the first round is awfull in these kinds of tourneys. I remember loosing the first 2 rounds of yugioh euros, and I got 65th, while the top 64 advanced and got a 200$ playmat. Dissapointed indeed. Game 2,3,4 and 5 (WOW) were all against RDW(Red Deck Wins) and in all of those games I lost game 1, winning 2-1 against all 4 of those decks. Baneslayer Angel was the defining card in both those games. Unlike all the other Caw-Blade's I kept 3 Baneslayers sided, and that was the correct decision. I remember a game against RDW when I had 2 life , he was full and had 5 creatures on the board. I had nothing on the field, 2 Gideon, 2 Sword , Baneslayer and Condemn in hand. It was turn 6 and I needed a land to play Bane and leave condemn mana up.I had to sacrifice 2 Gideons while I was looking for the 6th mana. Resolved Bane, played condemn, survived, played a sword , equip, fly, untap play hawks etc. I took complete control of the game back and won turn 5 of extra turns. So I'm 4-1 , I need 7-2 to advance to day 2. Round 6 was a mirror and a disaster, I got destroyed by a pro 2-0. Round 7 was also a mirror, but I won 2-0, he played wurms, I played condemns, no sweat. Then we Jace your Jace your Jace your Jace your Jace your Jace I win. I'm 5-2. I need 2 straight wins to get to day 2. My opponent? - Valakut. He wins the first game on turn 4 with 2 summoning traps into 2 Primeval Titans. GG. Game 2. Turn 2 summoning trap reveals Terastandon and he destroys my 2 lands, leaving me with 3/3 elefants. while he has a 9/9 beater, and I have NO MANA. I manage to stay alive long enough to play Wrath and come back with Jace TMS. I took early control of game 3, got him with swords and won easily. It was a very close game, but made it 2-1. Last deciding round was against Valakut aswell. I misplayed with equipping mystic, left him with 1 life and lost to burn. I gave the mystic a sword and a staff, when I should have just given him the staff, then I would have survided and killed him next turn. Game 2 was a disaster aswell. So I'm 6-3, and I don't make it. I had a great time, learned alot, played in the PTQ etc. Overall I should have brought more money with me, because my last hours in the airport were horrible and I was starving. I'm planning to visit GP Prague on May 22nd, so keep your heads up, I might win.) Amethyst P.S. I will post my deck later if you are interested. |
