We had a long, enjoyable run, and I would like to thank every Orlando Magic fan who contributed to our small community on the web. This message board will be left online as an archive into the thoughts and minds of a group of Magic fanatics who lived through a 21-win season, the drafting of Dwight Howard, and an eventual NBA Finals appearance. As Carmelo Anthony(notes) demands the New Jersey Nets surround him with veteran talent as a condition for him to commit to a contract extension, his agent has been the driving force behind bringing Detroit Pistons guard Richard Hamilton(notes) into multiteam trade talks, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Anthony’s agent, Leon Rose, also represents Hamilton, and sources said he pushed Nets general manager Billy King to bring the Pistons into trade talks with New Jersey and the Denver Nuggets. Anthony has wanted the Nets to upgrade their roster upon his arrival for him to sign a three-year, $64 million contract extension.
“Leon is driving this one,” one front-office executive told Yahoo! Sports on Friday night. More From Adrian Wojnarowski
With Anthony’s agent so heavily involved in brokering particular players in the deal, the Nets are working under a belief that a proposed package to bring them Hamilton and Denver’s Chauncey Billups(notes) would be sufficient to sell Anthony on joining them over his preferred destination, the New York Knicks.
Rose and William Wesley of CAA have long wanted to get Anthony and another of their clients, New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul(notes), to the Nets as the franchise prepares for a move to Brooklyn, N.Y. Whichever franchise gets Anthony – the Nets or Knicks – will find itself a frontrunner to eventually acquire Paul. For now, Rose is pushing hard to get a suitable package together for Denver to get his client off a team he longer wants to play for.
As part of a package that would bring them Anthony and Billups for Derrick Favors(notes), Devin Harris(notes) and multiple first-round picks, New Jersey proposed sending the Pistons Troy Murphy(notes) and Johan Petro(notes) for Hamilton and Detroit’s 2011 first-round draft pick.
Detroit rejected the overture, and New Jersey has yet to counter with a revised offer, sources said. The availability of Hamilton has been known for months, and yet the Nets only now finally reached out about including him in the Anthony deal. This could suggest that Rose is more enthusiastic about adding Hamilton than King and Nets coach Avery Johnson.
The Pistons are determined to trade Hamilton and the $25 million left on his contract, but they refuse to part with the draft pick, sources said. Murphy has a $12 million expiring contract and Petro is in the first season of a three-year, $10 million deal.
The Record of Hackensack, N.J., first reported that New Jersey had engaged Detroit in the talks on Friday.
Most league executives are dubious that Anthony would believe Billups and Hamilton, ages 34 and 32, respectively, would be tantalizing. Nevertheless, Denver has shown little interest in negotiating a trade with New York, and it believes Anthony doesn’t want to risk free agency this offseason when a new labor agreement could cost him tens of millions of dollars in guaranteed money. The Nuggets have until the Feb. 24 trade deadline to move Anthony, but team executives and the player would like to do a deal sooner.
As Yahoo! Sports first reported on Dec. 14, the Nets want the chance to use Russian billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov to personally sell Anthony on signing a contract extension. First, the teams must agree on terms of a trade. There are several scenarios still in play, including a straight-up package that includes Favors, Murphy and draft picks going to Denver for combinations of Anthony, Al Harrington(notes) and Renaldo Balkman(notes).

Man what a tough trade this seems to be. So many players, variations and variable at stake. I sure hope he doesn't get traded... I don't want another superstar in the East. But at least he wouldn't be in our division.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP)—A person with knowledge of the proposed Carmelo Anthony(notes) trade says the holdup is over the framework of the deal, not the All-Star forward’s willingness to commit to New Jersey.
Though they appeared close to a deal 11 days ago, the teams are still negotiating what the Nets would send to Denver, the person told The Associated Press on Tuesday on condition of anyonymity because he was not authorized to speak publiclly about the trade.
New Jersey has offered to ship six players and at least two first-round draft picks to Denver in the deal that would send Anthony to the Nets along with former Pistons teammates Chauncey Billups(notes) and Richard Hamilton(notes).
But the teams haven’t been able to agree on the exact price that will persuade the Nuggets to finally part with their franchise player
The person added that the Nets are not concerned about Anthony’s commitment to the franchise for the long term should the trade be completed, saying they are convinced the 26-year-old will sign a $65 million, three-year contract extension if New Jersey, Denver and Detroit can agree on the others parts of the deal.
The teams continued their negotiations on Tuesday, but little was happening, the person said.
