NOTE FROM THE FORUM OWNER:

We had a long, enjoyable run, and I would like to thank every Orlando Magic fan who contributed to our small community on the web. This message board will be left online as an archive into the thoughts and minds of a group of Magic fanatics who lived through a 21-win season, the drafting of Dwight Howard, and an eventual NBA Finals appearance. Van Gundy went into a long rant about accountability and suggested each individual take responsibility for themselves. "It's not the players [separate from] the coach. I can't separate myself. It's my job to maximize the performance of the players we have. It's my job to find a way to make that happen. At the same time, individuals need to take responsibility for their own performance. If I want to blame the players or they want to blame me, or their teammates, or whatever then nobody takes responsibility and nobody gets anything done," he said.

"I look at it as I was hired to coach this team, we're not playing well, that's my fault and my responsibility, and I better find some solutions to get it turned around. That's the way I look at it. I think every guy in there needs to look at it as, how am I going to get my play turned around? That's where we all need to be and not trying to find excuses and explanations or what everybody else is doing. I need to take care of my coaching and they need to take care of their playing and hopefully we get back on the right track."

He also added the players can't single anyone out and stressed everyone needs to be accountable. These comments suggest players are steering the blame towards Van Gundy rather than looking in the mirror.

Later, he added the team has lacked a vocal leader outside of himself. "Whether we need that or not, I don't know but that's something that you can't contrive. You can't make that up. People are who they are. It's never been a real vocal group of people. That's pretty much been me."

I am surprised the franchise actually thought Carter was a vocal leader. I've been to a zillion Nets games and he is always the one yukking it up during the whole game, not taking anything seriously.

If there was a vocal leader candidate, my choice would be Nelson. The rest are mutes, led by king mute himself Rashard.

I am surprised as well. I never would have pegged VC as that guy, and even then, all summer long he talked about how he just wanted to fit in with the flow of the team instead of being a focal point.

Nelson should be that guy. And I'm even going to say at this point I think Redick can be as well.

What I am going to say is open and honest, if the Orlando Magic wants to win it all this year, the time to seek the leader to speak up is now. Otherwise, what's the point?

At this point, how are we benefiting from Carter being in the starting lineup? If he won't drive the ball and act like he gives a crap, then why is he in there?

If we are going to seak out a viable leader, it sounds crazy, but JJ is our guy. Why?

- Carter has never been the guy to control a team.
- Rashard Lewis doesn't talk.
- Dwight doesn't control the ball enough to lead..not to mention he's a complainer.
- Nelson is the only other guy out there I would think of, but who knows if or when he is going to get hurt next. I hate to have that outlook..but it is the truth.
