NOTE FROM THE FORUM OWNER:

We had a long, enjoyable run, and I would like to thank every Orlando Magic fan who contributed to our small community on the web. This message board will be left online as an archive into the thoughts and minds of a group of Magic fanatics who lived through a 21-win season, the drafting of Dwight Howard, and an eventual NBA Finals appearance. You can also visit the original MagicMadness Forum at http://orlandomagic.proboards.com.

The start of training camp is still more than a week away, but judging by the turnout at the Magic’s practice facility recently, that camp already has begun.

Except for centers Dwight Howard(notes) and Marcin Gortat(notes), almost everyone else has been there working on their games, getting in shape, making sure they are ready when camp begins.

Gortat has been in his native Poland, playing for his national team at Eurobasket Championships. After six games, Poland was eliminated from the tournament recently.

Howard, who spent the summer traveling the world doing promotional appearances for both the league and his marketing partners, has been in Los Angeles this week, first filming another cameo movie appearance and then doing a promotional spot for TNT.

Vince Carter(notes), Jameer Nelson(notes), Brandon Bass(notes), Mickael Pietrus(notes) and Rashard Lewis(notes) are in Orlando, playing together with hopes of another good season.

The Magic, who lost to the Lakers in the NBA Finals last season, have changed the team chemistry with some risky moves this summer. They said goodbye to key player Hedo Turkoglu(notes) and replaced him with Carter, two players with dramatically different styles.

Nelson, the starting point guard and one of the team captains, has shown no signs of a problem stemming from shoulder surgery, which caused him to miss the second half of last season. He returned at the Finals, but looked rusty.

NOTES, QUOTES

• Stan Van Gundy held a day-long coaching clinic earlier this month for an estimated 75 high school and college coaches at the private school that his children attend in Central Florida. Money raised benefited both the school and the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches.

• The Magic are anticipating their most-watched season in team history. For the first time since Shaquille O’Neal(notes) left the franchise in 1996 to sign with the Lakers, the Magic stopped selling season tickets. They capped the number at 13,000, even though Amway Arena can seat more than 15,000. They wanted to make sure they had some single-game tickets available. The Magic season ticket base, earlier this decade, had slipped to 6,000.

Quote To Note: “He looks great.”—Magic coach Stan Van Gundy, when asked about G Jameer Nelson’s workouts.

ROSTER REPORT

Player News:

• F Matt Barnes(notes) may not even know it yet, but he has being tabbed to replace Hedo Turkoglu, not necessarily as a starter, but as the guy who will be inbounding the ball in key, late-game situations. Barnes was signed as a free agent from Phoenix. Van Gundy loved Turkoglu in that role because of his size and decision-making ability. Barnes is three inches shorter, but he is known as a heady player.

• C Marcin Gortat had a successful stint on the Polish National Team that just finished at the EuroBasket Tournament. Although Poland was eliminated with a 2-4 record, Gortat averaged 34.5 minutes per game and had three double-doubles, including a final game of 12 points and 12 rebounds.

• G Vince Carter may be new to the Magic this season, but he already had a home in Orlando, where he has lived the past few years when he was playing in New Jersey. Carter still has family in Daytona Beach, where he grew up, and he expects to be seeing many of his friends at the games this season.

Medical Watch:

• G Jameer Nelson (right labrum surgery) continued his rehab this summer from the surgery that kept him out through the second half of the season. He has looked 100 percent recovered in recent workouts.

Draft Picks: None. The Magic showed very little interest in getting involved in the 2009 Draft, believing it was one of the weakest in years.

Thats great that he looks back at 100% because he really struggled in the playoffs when he first came back. Good thing preseason is just around the corner so he can sharpen his skills before the regular season.

Jameer is going to roll up and smoke opposing point guards this season.
