One of the most excited people in Poland right now is a 6-foot-11 center who plays for the Orlando Magic.

Marcin Gortat is preparing to play in EuroBasket 2009, which is being held in Poland for the first time since 1963. Gortat arguably is the most indispensable player for Poland’s national team, which will play its first tournament game on Monday against Bulgaria.

"The group of people that we have right now is probably the strongest team we’ve ever had in the basketball history of our country," Gortat told the Orlando Sentinel in a phone interview. "That’s going to be a huge, huge chance for most of us to win something in our life. We had a discussion with our coach, and he told us that there’s going to be only one chance — one life chance — when we’re going to have an opportunity to play in front of our own crowd."

Magic swingman Mickael Pietrus will not be playing for France in EuroBasket 2009. Pietrus’ agent, Bill McCandless, said Pietrus played with microfractures in his right wrist at the end of last season and during the playoffs and that Pietrus is missing the tournament to give the wrist time to heal. Pietrus’ wrist is expected to be completely healed by the time the Magic begin training camp on Sept. 29.

Gortat said he has recovered completely after pulling a muscle in his back during an exhibition between Poland and Great Britain on Aug. 14.

"My back is great," Gortat said. "I pulled my muscle a little bit, and right now I feel great. I don’t have any problem with my back. I’m in great shape."

Gortat added he's looking forward to returning to the Magic. He said he was surprised -- not disappointed -- that the team matched the five-year, $34 million offer sheet he signed with the Dallas Mavericks.

"I was really surprised," Gortat said. "It wasn’t any disappointment. It just isn’t normal for the team to match the offer for a backup center who is playing 10 minutes a game. It was just a huge surprise for me. But I’m really happy that I’m going to have this opportunity to play for this team again.

"Obviously, we’ve going to have a good team, and our goal is going to be to win the championship. Those fans helped me. They were helping out over the last five years, since I was playing in the first summer league. So, I’m really happy that I’m going to be playing for this team again, and I’m looking forward to coming back and working on my game and obviously help my team to win the games. We’ve got great fans in Orlando. We’re trying to bring them the best basketball this season."

Poland entertain home crowd with EuroBasket opening win - Sep 7, 2009 (by Eurobasket News)
Poland - Bulgaria 90:78
David Logan  (184-G-82, college: Indianapolis) scored 23 points to pace Poland to the starting win at the EuroBasket 2009. The hosts of the tournament enjoyed the home fans with a 12-point win over Bulgaria in Group D.
Michal Ignerski  (205-F-80, agency: Stanley International, college: Mississippi St.) stepped up for Poland in the opening frame to give the hosts a necessary boost. His two triples gave the home team a 26:16 lead midway through the first quarter. Then Koszarek and once again Michal Ignerski fired from downtown and Poland led by 11 points at the first break. Poland soon opened a 17-point lead and continued to dominate. David Logan capped the half with a trey as the home team gained a 52:37 advantage. Videnov and Evtimov sparked the intrigue early in the third quarter scoring five in a row for the visitors. But Bulgaria never seriously threatened the margin as Poland rolled to a 75:58 lead with ten minutes to go. The game was not over though as Earl Rowland (188-G-83, college: St.Mary's, CA) accounted for 7 points early in the fourth stanza to fuel a comeback effort from Bulgaria. They cut the deficit to only 7 points before Koszarek and Maciej Lampe (210-C-85, agency: Edge Sports) came up with timely buckets. Michal Ignerski and David Logan added five more points and Poland ran away for good in this one.
Michal Ignerski finished with 22 points for Poland. Maciej Lampe added 17 points, while Marcin Gortat (213-C-84) had 16 points and 10 boards in the win. Earl Rowland answered with 20 points for Bulgaria. Dejan Ivanov  (205-F/C-86) contributed 18 points in defeat.

Poland: David Logan 23, Michal Ignerski 22, Maciej Lampe 17
Bulgaria: Earl Rowland 20, Dejan Ivanov 18
