The Orlando Magic will sign Jason Williams in the coming days, according to a source that spoke with RealGM's Alex Kennedy.

Williams, who worked out for the Magic on Tuesday, resides in Orlando with his family and will return after retiring shortly before the 08-09 season.

The Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks have also expressed interest in Williams.

Williams has averaged 11.4 points and 6.3 assists over the course of his ten-year career.

I like the move. Put him in at the backup. If he isn't any good, put AJ back in the backup slot.

The Magic have signed free agent guard Jason Williams, General Manager Otis Smith announced on Wednesday.

RealGM's Alex Kennedy reported earlier on Wednesday that Orlando would sign Williams. "Jason (Williams) provides depth and leadership to our backcourt," said Smith. "He is a veteran point guard that knows what it takes to help us reach our ultimate goal. We are excited to add him to our team." Williams did not play during the 2008-09 season after announcing his retirement last September.

Ugh. I thought Otis said he looked "okay... for a guy who sat out a year." I'm not crazy about this move.

Not really too siked about this move. IMO AJ is still gonna be the backup PG for this team. I dont think white chocolate has enough in the tank to pass him by.

Why even sign him? His flashy passes were good in Sacramento but he was never a good shooter and had a lot of TOs. Not to mention he hasn't played in basically a year.

Well, hes not going to jump up and down and hype him up before they had him signed, (so another team looking for a backup would sign him for more $$, for example).

Plus, there's not too many options left so he can't be choosy now. Its better to have an experienced backup to go to than a young guy who can't necessarily be relied on if worst comes to worst.

So So move, gives us more options behind Jameer instead of say signing a guy like Wilks.

Yes.

Alex Kennedy is the source that broke the Jason Williams signing; he says that Otis might still be pursuing Watson.

I completely forgot Stan coached him before..

RealGM - Magic coach Stan Van Gundy sees similarities between Jason Williams and Rafer Alston.

Orlando signed Williams on Wednesday, and rode Alston all the way to the NBA Finals last season after starting point guard Jameer Nelson went down with an injury.

"I think there's some real similarities between he and Rafer in that I think you have guys that are in their 30s, veteran guys who are a little bit older, but have the type of bodies that are a little bit younger than their age," Van Gundy told the Orlando Sentinel.

"The thing that Jason's got that we really like he can play big minutes if needed, and that's what ended up happening with Jameer last year when he went down. Jason, as he puts in the work, gets back in shape, has the type of body and the type of energy that will allow him to play big minutes if we need that. We hope we won't."

Van Gundy is familiar with Williams from when they were both in Miami, and said that the point guard "still looked like Jason Williams" even after sitting out last season.

I think we're still pursuing Watson hard. I like the Williams signing a lot actually, especially if he is used in spurts. IMO Anthony Johnson should be packing his bags. Otis doesn't like that his play forced him to scramble to sign Rafer.
