Magic Close to Signing C.J. Watson; Update: Watson off the table...

Good move, an alternative to A.J. and definitely an upgrade over what we went into last year with which was Wilks who eventually got hurt. Also he's an upgrade over Lue at this stage of his career.

The Orlando Magic are close to signing free agent point guard C.J. Watson, giving them an alternative to veteran Anthony Johnson as a backup to often-injured Jameer Nelson.

Watson, 6-2, 180 pounds, played the last two years at Golden State after spending one year in Greece and another year in the NBA Development League.

According to NBA sources, Watson could be signed as early as this weekend. Watson last season averaged 9.5 points and 2.7 assists, mostly as a backup for the Warriors. Golden State would have seven days to match any offer, since Watson is a restricted free agent.

The Magic have been looking for a low-budget point guard since they traded veteran Rafer Alston last month to New Jersey as part of the deal that brought Vince Carter to Orlando.

Alston was the Magic starter through the second half of last season and through their playoff run. Despite helping the Magic reach the NBA Finals, he became expendable because the Magic already were committed to Nelson as their starter for next season.

Nelson, though, has struggled with durability through his career. He played 42 games last season and 69 games the previous year. His size and willingness to throw around his 6-0, 190-pound frame has led to several injuries in his five years with the Magic.

The Magic already have Johnson under contract, but they decided not to re-sign free agent point guard Tyronn Lue.

You know what, if we get Watson he could end up being the backup Point Guard. He's younger, shoots better and probably would get minutes over A.J. I love A.J and what he did for us last year, but Watson at this stage is probably the better option.

aj shot the ball VERY well last season, so thats a big statement on watson...if ur right, its definetly an upgrade.... two things that bothered me about aj last season was his defense[even tho he did put a valiant effort] and some dumb a$$ mistakes he tends to make at critical points in the game. other than that he's good with me

Rocks blocking shots on guys with dreadlocks
when i first heard this signing I thought it was pretty good but after hearing warrior fans opinions on other boards I'm not as sold now. He has good height but they said he gets bullied because he has a slight frame. I thought he was one of those super athletic young guys on the warriors but apparently he isnt too athletic and doesnt have great lateral quickness. Hopefully he isnt that bad on defense though. One of the great positives was that he is supposedly a really good shooter and has a nice looking stroke. I guess i need to see more of his game to get sold on this move but at worst I think he would be a nice 3rd PG

Would be a solid signing. 25 mins a game and just 1 turnover/per. Good stuff.

How could this be bad, he's our 3rd point guard? This is a good thing!

Solid pickup, hopefully GSW doesn't match.

I like this; would be glad if the Magic can sign him.

That was something I was worrying about, us needing more depth at PG.

I would be very excited about this. One of the two former Vols currently in the NBA :)

I've posted it before and I'll probably post it again, but this is my favorite memory of CJ

If we sign him, he's our second string PG, IMO. He is defenitely better than AJ.

He is restricted, so there is a chance Golden State will match.

They're not going to match. They are too stacked at the PG position.
