We had a long, enjoyable run, and I would like to thank every Orlando Magic fan who contributed to our small community on the web. This message board will be left online as an archive into the thoughts and minds of a group of Magic fanatics who lived through a 21-win season, the drafting of Dwight Howard, and an eventual NBA Finals appearance. I know many of you don't know me yet, but I'm just too excited and I'm telling anyone that will listen what happened to me yesterday. I work for a major wireless phone company and we have a weekly NFL Pick-em contest (straight up, no spread) where the weekly winner (amongst tens of thousands of participants) with the highest score (3 points for a win, 0 points for a loss, 1 lock pick per week - +/- 7 points depending on whether you pick the game right or wrong) wins two tickets to Super Bowl XLIII! Well, I was tied for the lead with one other person, only missing the Pats/Fins game, they did a random drawing and I won. Weekly Winner Prize: 5-day/4-night trip for two (2) persons (winner and adult guest) to Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Florida. Prize includes round trip coach air transportation from major airport nearest winner’s residence to/from Tampa, FL; ground transportation to/from airport, group functions and Super Bowl game; four (4) nights standard hotel accommodations (single room, double occupancy), a gift bag; and two (2) tickets to the Super Bowl pre-game tailgate party; and two (2) tickets to the Super Bowl. Now, since I live in Orlando, they will substitute a rental car for the airfare, but HOT DAMN! I'm excited!

Btw, my second best sports moment happened this year as well, when a friend and I were at a local sports bar watching Game 4 of the first round of the playoffs between the Magic and Raptors when a guy sitting a few tables away from me gave me free tickets to the clinching Game 5 at Amway! It's been a good year and a long time coming... |

They finally provided some early details on the agenda for my trip (no ticket info yet unfortunately), and they keeping us at the Marriot on I-Drive in Orlando and bussing us over. Bummer. I wanted to stay in Tampa for the weekend and get away from my hometown for a bit.

Damn, that's like a 2 hour bus ride (something like that, right?). Well, I-Drive is always a fun area - but of course, nothing new to you. |

Near I-drive. It's closer to Disney than I-Drive. I was giving a generality to give an idea of where I was staying for those not in the know. Specifically, it's this one! |

Nice, I was just curious because I worked for Marriott for 6 years at both the Marriott World Center (2000 room monster off i4 close to disney) and the Ritz Carlton (right next door to the JW you are staying at) The Ritz and even the JW are the two best hotels Orlando has to offer. I actually met, and got to drive the cars of a bunch of Magic players during the Doc Rivers era when Darrell Armstrong had his annual Charity Golf Tournament. Coolest player by far was Big Bo Outlaw I am jealous as hell you got tickets. I took a look on ebay for prices just in case my Steelers make it. It was like $2000 PER TICKET, and that was for crappy corner upper bowl seats. |

Just got back from my trip. What a fun time had at a great game (not a fan of either team, just a great 4th quarter by both teams). During the entire trip, I spent a total of $55 and that was only once I got into the stadium ($38 for a hat...$38 f'n dollars, but oh well, $10 for a beer...$10...for a single Bud Light, and $7 for a hotdog). They had a dinner for us on Thursday night with lobster, steak, and a bunch of other types of food, free drinks, faux casino, and Bruce Smith signing autographs. After the dinner was over, next door, they had a hospitality suite (that I spent most of my time at) with more free drinks, two pool tables, an air hockey table, a huge flat screen TV (probably more than 100") with Rock Band 2 set up, and two other flat screens (probably around 55" or so) with Wii's setup with all sorts of games. I missed the dinner they had on Saturday night, but they took everyone to Bongo's at Pleasure Island and apparently Reggie Wayne and Mario Williams were there signing autographs. We had brunch on Sunday morning and Deacon Jones and Jack Youngblood were there signing autographs. We left around 1pm on one of 4 buses with police escort all the way from the hotel in Orlando to the stadium in Tampa. Once there, we went to an event called the Super Bowl Tailgate party that was by invitation only. There were all kinds of celebrities there. I personally met Alonzo Mourning, Usane Bolt, Paul Walker, Greg Anthony, and Anthony Anderson (you'll probably have to look that last one up on imdb). Some others from our group said they met Adam Sandler and Lawrence Fishburne as well. I missed out on meeting them. All the food and drinks were free there as well. The halftime show was awesome, even for someone that isn't really a fan of The Boss. Anyway, a good time was had by all and I'll always remember this past weekend... |

In case you weren't already aware, you are one lucky SOB. I'm glad you had a good time. My super bowl experience was quite the opposite, albeit still interesting. In fact, it began raining in my living room. Before you get too excited, I must inform you that my living room is on the bottom of a two story house. The rain, as it turns out, was not coming from the heavens, but from a busted pipe leading to the shower in the upstairs bathroom. As the rain began to fall during Harrison's 100 yd interception return, I closed my eyes and silently prayed that the water dripping on my forehead was a sign from God that the Steelers were on their way to victory, and not that my home was drowning. Needless to say, I missed halftime and a considerable chunk of the second half. There was no Usane Bolt, no Adam Sandler. In fact, there was not even a plumber. Apparently, plumbers like watching the Super Bowl as well. When one finally arrived, the damage had been done. There was no free food and no free drinks, and my only consolation - a bag of chips and some salsa - was eaten off the table by my golden retriever while I was frantically running upstairs. He even managed to get the salsa all over the carpet - but don't worry, the stain didn't set on account of the torrent of water flowing through the room. But it turned out alright in the end, as I had five bucks riding on the Steelers against a coworker. And while that five dollars won't cover the cost of the plumber, the damaged flooring, the new pipework, two lamps, a clock radio, a considerable amount of drywall, or the new tiling in the shower, it will most certainly cover the cost of the salsa. |
