ORLANDO – Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson believes now after days of lingering dizziness and nausea that he indeed suffered a concussion last week when he was accidentally whacked in the face by a Dwight Howard forearm.

Nelson also admitted Thursday that he had to leave Monday’s practice because of bouts of dizziness, and the decision to hold him out of Tuesday’s game against New Orleans was based on concerns regarding his third concussion in the past 17 months. Magic officials were concerned enough about Nelson’s well being that they sent him to have a CT scan on Monday. It was determined to be negative.

Nelson hasn’t played since last Tuesday when Howard accidentally turned and hit Nelson on the chin. He missed last Friday’s victory in Milwaukee and Tuesday’s home loss to the Hornets. He did return to practice on Thursday, reporting no effects from the latest concussion he sustained.

"Today was the first normal day for me. I didn’t know what to expect because the last time I practiced, it was not what I thought it was going to be,’’ Nelson said following Thursday’s workout. "I thought I was ready to go (on Monday) and I got a little dizzy. Today, fortunately everything was fine.’’

The Magic originally diagnosed Nelson’s injury as a bruised jaw, but after suffering through days of dizziness and nausea – similar to the symptoms he had with his two previous concussions – Nelson is convinced this was a third concussion.

"I’m leaning toward it being a concussion more than it not being one,’’ said the Magic point guard who is averaging 10.9 points and 5.7 assists this season. "It’s hard to tell when you’ve had one. It’s not really clear like it is with a break or a fracture. I got a CT scan and everything came back negative, which is great. That gave me some relief and the confidence to step back on the court.’’

Nelson said there is some concern about his long-term health, but not too much to keep him off the basketball court. He previously had been wearing a "homemade’’ mouthpiece, but he’s since gone to an orthodontist to be fitted for a specialized mouthpiece that can reduce some of the shock another hit might cause.

Nelson, who expects to start Saturday when the Magic play in Cleveland, said he can’t change his usual fearless style of play.

"I know I’m going to get hit. At the position I play I have to block out, I get hit with screens, take the charges and dive for loose balls,’’ Nelson said. "I can’t be out there thinking I might get hit or might get dizzy again. I just pray that nothing bad happens to me. If I was going to change the way I play I wouldn’t allow coach to play me.’’

"In this sport there’s contact, so I can’t go out there and avoid the hits and the contact. I’m going to get hit. I just leave everything else to (God). But I really can’t say what’s going to happen if I get another concussion.’’

Wow, that's really scary stuff. No wonder it's taking so long for him to return.

Jameer should retire...

Hahaha. Well, I don't know about that... especially after that contract extension.

Yeah, the Magic and Otis would go nuts if he did too.

Sheesh. This is a nightmare season for Nelson. A shame too since I'm sure he wanted to explode onto the scene after the death of his father.

I feel like Nelson's been having a pretty solid year, honestly.

Definitely better than last season. He gets more assists, and his turnovers are down. I'm part of a small group, but really I haven't had much of a problem with Nelson's play at all this season. I know there are some here and a lot over at RealGM who want him out of the starting lineup next season (as in bring in a new PG).

As for this latest news story; keep him out one more game, please. Make sure he's over the effects of this before we have to hear about it bothering him in the postseason.

Edit: Just took a quick glance at his stats, and he's up in rebounds, FG%, 3P%, and FT% as well. I have a feeling he'll only continue improving next season - I'm optimisic.

I agree, MM. I don't mind him that much either. I still believe he has the ability if he could eventually get going. He's more of a scoring PG, and at least he can rebound a little, and like you said he's been getting his assists up more than he did in the past.

Hopefully he's alright come playoff time.

He's certainly not the type of point guard who will ever be able to carry a mediocre team on his shoulders (Nash, Kidd, Paul, etc), but if he's on a talented team, he can help the team win ball games - as he's done this year. While I would love to see a top point guard here as the starter, and Nelson off the bench, I still think a true power forward should much more of a priority.

He needs to sit as long as neccessary to get rid of the side effects. There's no hurry to get back.

On a side note, I suffered a pretty horrible concussion a few months back (day after Thanksgiving). Taking my little cousins to Chuck E Cheeses (dangerous place, I know), I was struck in the temple by a hard, wooden "skee ball." Two hours later, I was in the emergency room. I was violently ill, couldn't see, and was so dizzy that I had no idea where I was. Within 3 hours, I was incoherent and almost unresponsive. They rushed me in for emergency CT scans to check for bleeding in my brain, but found nothing (thank God) except a very serious concussion. I was in the hospital for a few days and was checked on by every neurologist in the Tampa Bay area. Long story short, I feel Jameer's pain.

Honest to God truth, it was a 7 year old girl (I'm a badass, I know). On her wind up she accidentally let go of the ball and I was standing about 5 feet away, and the ball hit me square in the temple, where there is almost no protection for your brain.

It didn't hurt that bad, but I don't really remember much of the rest of the day. Serious concussions are pretty scary - I wouldn't reccomend it.

Wow man, glad you're alright now. That stuff isn't a joke, it's serious as hell. Go figure it would be at a place like Chuck E Cheeses too. When I was younger there was a similar place here, and I ended up hurting my tooth on one of these net things there.

Glad you're OK though.
