The Magic are virtually locked into the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race, unable to go up or down in the final 10 games, barring bizarre happenstance.

And as much as Coach Stan Van Gundy wants to win and polish the club's record, he has to get J.J. Redick some playing time.

The club has to see what J.J. can do outside the practice floor.

If these are Redick's last 10 games in Orlando --- and who thinks he'll see the light of day in the postseason? --- then the Magic at least need to show other teams that he has value.

J.J. still has a timeless quality --- he can shoot lights out. And if Jason Kapono and Matt Carroll and Luther Head and Eddie House and Kyle Korver can make it, is there any reason to believe Redick can't carve a spot somewhere as a shooter? Are those aforementioned gentlemen known as good defenders? No.

We know what Mo Evans can do as the starting shooting guard. We know what his backup, Keith Bogans, can do as Mo's backup. We don't really know what Redick can do except sit on the bench and look peeved.

A frustrated Redick wants out. No surprise there. He requested a trade through his agent, Arn Tellem, early this season.

So unless Van Gundy suddenly falls in love with J.J., Redick doesn' t figure to be in the Magic's future plans.

Evans is a pending free agent. But if he's ahead of Redick now in the pecking order and returns, how is the view going to change for Redick, especially with Bogans coming back?

It doesn't. Redick knows this. He even believes the Magic might go after another shooting guard this offseason, looking to upgrade over "Mo-gans."

The Magic need to get some games under Redick's belt because they also need to show they are draft-smart --- something they haven't been accused of lately.

I'd love to see JJ get Bogans spot in the rotation for awhile here. I don't know if Bogans is still banged up but if so than that would at least allow him to heal fully for the playoffs. His explosion, while never great, has seemed to be on the decline around the basket, and an abdominal strain would explain that. So playing JJ 20 min a game here on out would serve two fold; we'd see JJ paired with Howard, which is why we drafted him, and Bogans could get back to 100%. It's a win/win situation.

I think J.J. will just have to wait it out and get traded over the offseason - hopefully with our pick along for a higher pick (or upgrade at SG). I really dont think JJ has a chance to beat out Bogans. KB can shoot and defend, and SVG is not going to take out one of our good defenders for JJ who, just jacks up shots.

I want to see at least Redick start at least 3+ games until the playoffs start. Let him get a lot of minutes so his trade value can come up.

I really agree with Schmitz on this one. Like, a lot. What do we have to lose by playing Redick? Okay, "games." So? Our seed is essentially assured. Let's see if Junior has some lead in his pencil.

I agree with the article too. It would give Bogans a chance to heal if he is injured, and if he's not, then at the very least builds jj's confidence, and gives him valued experience in case (god forbid) Bogans or Evans get's hurt.

Pleeeeese!!!! Yeah thats a good idea, lets ruin all continuity in preparation for the post season and give JJ a solid rotation players minutes. Hell, why not just start him, better yet lets just dismiss all pretext and name JJ captain, MVP, and get Otis to extend him. Lets give him one of them “salute to the past” banners, it can be a place holder until we retire his number.

Or better yet…why not just understand JJ is a deep bench player on a winning team with post season aspirations? A shooter on a team full of shooters. Why not give this JJ stuff a rest. JJ is right where he should be, safely on the bench where he should support his teammates, and stay outta the way.

"Give him" zero....none...nada. Until JJ shows a compelling reason that he deserves minutes over the curent roster, that he has earned a spot he is perfectly cast as bench fodder.

When your former head coach...current head coach and GM seem to be in agreement...well there probably is a reason your in the situation your in

I agree.

The kid hasn't proven anything. And, everytime he comes in (like tonight), he sucks! He doesn't deserve minutes over any of the players ahead of him. Tough luck JJ.
