Came across this today, I would LOVE to get magette but dont know if we could pull it off dollars-wise.

Point guard Jason Williams of the Miami Heat isn't the only one who will go into free agency this summer hoping the Orlando Magic will give him a call. With the Magic having so many guards in the final year of their contracts -- and with center Dwight Howard locked in for many years -- there are players all over the league hoping for a ride to Orlando.

Shooting guard Corey Maggette of the Los Angeles Clippers will be another one looking to see what the Magic will do, which is why he smiled last week when he was asked about opting out of the final year of his contract to become a free agent this summer.

Maggette will be a good pickup, only if he understand his role here would be different than in LA. We also expect defense from our shooting guards, which I think is not one of Maggette's strong area. Maybe he can bring some offense punch off the bench for us.

Off the bench? You think he'd back-up Bogans?
If Maggette signed with us, our depth chart would look something like this:

  • Nelson/Dooling
  • Maggette/Bogans/Redick
  • Turkoglu
  • Lewis/Cook/Garrity
  • Howard/Battie/Foyle
With Gortat and two scrubs as the inactives.

That is assuming, of course, that Dooling re-signs and that Bogans doesn't use his opt-out clause.

EDIT: There's also this possibility:

  • Nelson/Dooling
  • Maggette/Bogans/Redick
  • Lewis/Turkoglu
  • Battie/Cook/Garrity
  • Howard/Foyle

No mention of Evans? Id much rather him than Bogans or Dooling or Arroyo or Redick.

Evans might be back, but I think it has a lot to do with what Bogans does. If he opts-out, then Evans stays. If Bogans doesn't opt-out, then I think Evans is gone. I'd love to keep him, too. But Dooling is more valuable to this team, and if it comes down to only having room for one or the other, I'll take Keyon.

Dooling is great. But hes no way more valuable than Evans. Dooling is barely even playing now. Evans is our starter, and not a bad one at that. He does the exact things we need. Im not saying hes perfect and there is no one better... but Dooling is just a guy off the bench. And if Evans and Dooling were the choices off the bench... I just might go with Evans. But it is tough because I love Keyon. Id rather see Bogans go and keep Mo.

Rocks blocking shots on guys with dreadlocks
idk how maggette would fit in with us now though, he seems like a guy who needs the ball in his hands to be effective which is an issue since hedo is that kind of player too (rashard has been pretty effective w/out the ball which is why he fits well) and if we add another one of those guys its gonna limit dwights opportunities some more and screw up the chemistry i feel

i would welcome maggette if he knew coming in that he isnt gonna be a 20ppg guy and realistically should look at 12-14 ppg (not having the ball alot) and busting his a** on defense, otherwise i would probably rather have evans stay than bring in maggette

if we get magette we are faced with a huge problem one that would mean turk would have to come off the bench, and with the year he is having he is not gonna do that. Second, they want to move lewis back to his normal postion 3 and if we get magette he will have to play the 4. If magette wants to come off the bench it will work if not orlando will not do this deal because turk is to valuable to the team. I hope he is willing to though because he would make us alot more dangerous especially are bench

Maggette would definitely be the starting SG here, and would be a NICE upgrade over either Bogans or Evans.

The site you read this from, Odin, declined to add this important part from the Sentinel article:

The Magic probably could get him for the mid-level exception ($5.5 million) if they extend it out for five years. Maggette started his career in Orlando, but he was traded after one year during the salary cap purge of 2000.

I think the big question is will Battie start and Stan go back to the better rebounding lineup? Or will he stick with whats working now and keep Rashard at the 4?

We have to know those answers before we can talk about adding anyone.

Yeah, I read that too and can't help but think how nice that would be. He can be offered the full MLE and still allow the Magic to resign Dooling and Evans, as long as it is for what they are worth, meaning no more than 3-4 mil each. If it comes down to being a choice between keeping Dooling or Evans (which I don't think it will, even if Bogans stays) than I would say keep Evans. Then re-sign Augie (or just re-sign him regardless) and bring in a vet for the back up pg spot like Williams, someone who will play for cheap and still contribute, and then draft a pg in the 1st round. But hopefully we can just resign them both. If Evans leaves than I'd like to see Gerald Green get signed or at least get a work out. He is as athletic a swingman as there is, with still a ton of potential.

As for Maggette fitting in, I don’t see a problem. His ability to slash to the hoop and get to the foul line is second to none, and if he would develop a passer mentality every now and then imagine the alley-opps to D12 or the open corner threes for Lewis and Turk that would present themselves. His defense is questionable, but it is just as good as what Evans or Bogans bring to the table. It would finally give us the advantage at that position most nights, instead of it being one of our weaker spots. I think getting a talent on his level for just the MLE would be a steal, and we’d be dumb not to do it. Unless of course we can get Artest instead…

Oh, and since I like hearing my self talk this is the line up I'd like to see;

Nelson; Dooling; Rookie
Maggette; Reddick; Bogans
Turk; Evans
Lewis; Cook; Augie
Howard; Battie; Gortat; Foyle

New post on the Maggette thing up at 3QC /shamelessplug.

Is anyone interested in Jason Williams? I didn't think he was worth discussing because, I mean, he's Jason Williams.

I'll pass on Williams, but Maggette might be an interesting plug at the shooting guard spot.

We have to know those answers before we can talk about adding anyone.

I think Stan will continue to keep Lewis at the PF spot and bring Battie off the bench for two reasons:

1. Why fix it if it ain't broke? The Lewis/Turkoglu combination at the Forward positions have worked well this year and we have seen that though Rashard has to guard people that are bigger than him, they are also people that can't keep up with him on defense.

2. I think Tonie Battie is already at the area in his career where he no longer thinks of himself as a solidified starter, but a veteran who will do what it takes to win...including coming off the bench.
