With Cleveland's LeBron James in Orlando tonight to face the Magic, I asked Dwight Howard Monday morning who would earn his top vote in the race for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award.

His answer might surprise you a little bit.

``There’s this guy down in Orlando, who wears No. 12, I think I’d vote for him,’’ Howard said while trying to keep a straight face. ``Vote for me … votes are needed.’’

The field for the MVP will assuredly be a crowded one, but Howard has undoubtedly played his way into the picture. He’s helped the Magic become an Eastern Conference power while becoming the NBA’s most dominant center.

Howard has boosted his scoring average from 17.6 points per game to 21.6 and he’s raised his rebounding total from 12.3 to a NBA-best 14.4 a game. Also, he’s averaging a career high in blocks (2.3) and he leads the NBA in double-doubles (59) and dunks (237). Incredibly, he has 77 more dunks than his next closest competitor (Phoenix’s Amare Stoudemire).

``He should be in the running with the year that he’s had,’’ Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said. ``With the improvement that he’s made and the improvement the team has made, he’d have to be considered. I don’t see how he wouldn’t be in the discussion.’’

Personally, my MVP ballot would look like this: 1. Kobe Bryant, Lakers; 2. Kevin Garnett, Celtics; 3. Chris Paul, Hornets; 4. Howard; 5. James, Cavaliers.

Kobe can almost smell another championship and he’s taken his game to another level now. He struggled with Pau Gasol out Sunday, but he’s been the best player in the world all season. Garnett’s numbers are down, but he’s changed the whole culture in Boston and has gotten the Celtics to defend like no other team in the NBA. Paul has been a one-man wrecking crew and deserves the honor, but will likely have to settle for the Most Improved Player award.

As for Howard, he says he has bigger goals in mind.

``I don’t think about it,’’ he said when asked if he was flattered by fans’ M-V-P chants. ``I’m just trying to help my team win games. It would be great to win MVP, but it would be even better for my team to make it to the championship.’’
Good job Dwight.

I would probably have Howard 4th as well.

Garnett shouldn't be ahead of LeBron, IMO. LeBron is having one of the best individual seasons of at least the past 2-3 decades.

If he shot above 65% free throws and cut the turnovers down I think he'd be running away with this thing (and the Magic would be getting more respect), but as it is he is definitely in the top 4.

The scary thing is that he is capable of shooting better and being less careless...The league should be afraid, very afraid! :O

Yup. Dwight is still 10% FT improvement away and a couple of TOs away from being a serious MVP contender.

He needs to work on a few more offensive moves. A reliable 15-foot jumper would really make him unstoppable.

I think LeBron is having a great season, but his team is 4th place in the EAST. With that being said, I think Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, and even McGrady are possible MVP contenders. Don't rule out Kevin Garnett either.

For me, right now, it's a tie between Chris Paul and Kobe Bryant. As good as Dwight, LeBron, and Garnett are, they haven't done nearly as much as Paul and Bryant to carry their teams to an elite level.
