Magic SF Hedo Turkoglu traces his success this season to playing for the Turkish National Team last summer. He said Saturday that he plans on playing for his native country again this summer in the EuroBasket 2009 qualifier -- and hopes he can bring the NBA's most improved player award back home.

"Maybe I can get most improved player. . . . that would be good for everybody to be proud of," Turkoglu said.

Turkoglu, who turns 29 on March 19, said he hears from Turkish people who want to congratulate him for his breakout season. "I hear it all the time. I get a lot of phone calls when I go back, they're going to be like, proud. They're proud what I did so far. Even if I don't get all-star, they still call me all-star in Turkey," he said.

Turk deserves MIP. Without him and his versatility, who knows where we would be now. We need to lock him up so he can stay around a while. He has 2 years left on his contract after this one.

Yessir, lock up the Turk! I think keeping him locked up for the duration of Nelson/Lewis/Howard's contract makes a lot of sense. I say do it even if it means we don't use the MLE because of cap concerns. That way even works for those Redick fans who want to see him have a future with this team as without the MLE the Magic don't upgrade the 2 much and he will have a legit shot at filling that role.

You know, I was looking at the teams salaries for next year and can't help but notice Battie's salary staring me in the face. The man is making starter money! I don't think Otis pays him that much to come off the bench. That limits Otis's flexibility this summer, most noticeably in forcing his hand to move Hedo to the 2. That’s not exactly the direction I want to see this team go.

It also makes resigning Hedo in two summers complicated (when he has a player option), especially if we spend 4-5 mil resigning your boy Dooling this summer. This summer is going to be interesting to watch. Otis will really earn his money if he plays this right. I could go on and on about FA, especially after reading your article at Bold n' Blue, but I'll save it.

We have 2 more years with Turkoglu so I don't think we should pull the trigger just yet. We've given Rashard Lewis and Jameer outrageous salaries, imagine what Turkoglu will be earning with Otis Smith. 10yr/350million. Let's see if next season he proves it wasn't a fluke year for him and he does play consistent.

Yeah, good point. No need to rush. Heck, his last year is a player option and he may just decide to take it and not declare, though I think he'd be worth much more than what he is slotted to make.

Turk is said to be an Otis favorite much like Jameer is - so expect Otis to try and extend his contract the first possible opportunity. I wouldn't disagree with it though since compared to Jameer, Turk has at least proven it for one season. We have to see whether the owners are willing to exceed the cap.
