Dwight came out with a dunk preview:

I'm pretty sure he does most of those in practice anyway.
That last one he may use early rounds.

Hate to say it, but none of those really impressed me. They're creative and athletic, sure, but part of what makes some dunks spectacular is how high the people get off the ground. Dwight's so big -- and he illustrated this point well when he hung on the rim -- that his dunks don't look as impressive as they would if he were, say, 6 inches shorter.

Damn...he needs to do that last dunk in the contest. I hope it doesn't hurt him though that people have now seen some of the things he might do.

Yeah that last dunk was sick as hell. That should be a 10.

For the second succesive year, Dwight Howard's proposal to have the rim raised to 12 feet during the annual dunk contest at All-Star Weekend in New Orleans has been rejected by the NBA.

The league office confirmed to ESPN.com on Tuesday that the Orlando Magic's All-Star center has again formally requested to have the rim hiked from the regulation 10 feet to 12 feet for at least one of his dunks, as Howard continues to seek ways to prove that his leaping ability is no less impressive that the hops possessed by shorter rivals.

Yet as with last February in Las Vegas -- when Howard was planning to wow judges with a 360 dunk at 12 feet and an attempt at 11½ feet which called for him to shift the ball between his legs in mid-air -- league officials balked.

They've ruled that changing the height of the rim, while easily done mid-contest with the help of hydraulics, clashes with their intent to apply as many standard NBA rules to All-Star Weekend contests as possible.

The decision also potentially affects Memphis' Rudy Gay. The 6-9 swingman recently issued a challenge in an NBA.com blog entry in which he vowed to match whatever the 6-11 Howard did on a 12-foot rim.

Lame.

They should just let him (and Gay?) do an unofficial dunk on a twelve-footer. I want to see it, whether it counts or not!

What a bunch of kill joys.

Just let the boys dunk on 12 feet - it should be fun and new. All this rules on an exhibition event is really sucking up all the fun.

Rocks blocking shots on guys with dreadlocks
seriously its stupid, they want to apply all these "standard rules" to the contests but you can have guys dunking over cardboard cutouts of nate robinson or nate robinson himself and you can have guys sitting on a chair and dudes fly over their head while the guy sitting throws the ball up for a dunk but oh no we cant raise the rim, that is against NBA RULES!!

SON OF A F**KING B**CH!!!!!

You know those stories about how some Disney costumed characters grope people? And some of those people sued?

One of those people had to have been related to David Stern. Why else would he want to f--- Orlando over like this? It's absolutely absurd for Allen to make the team. It has nothing to do with him and everything to do with the idea that the Celtics are so good they "deserve" three All-Stars.

Well, Ray Allen is not a bad selection. If anything, it's Rasheed Wallace who shouldn't have made it.

Wallace makes more sense than Allen because he at least plays the same position as the player he's replacing. Allen is a two-guard, and has been his whole career; Butler is a small forward, and has been his whole career. The East's depth chart -- presuming that Doc starts Antawn Jamison in Garnett's place -- now looks like this:

  • Kidd, Billups
  • Wade, Hamilton, Johnson, Allen
  • James, Pierce
  • Jamison, Wallace
  • Howard, Bosh

And it's not like those twos can play the three. Hamilton could do it, but it's pretty dumb.

Whatever, I just hope that if/when Kidd gets traded that Stern is smart enough to recognize Jose Calderon's brilliance and to put him on the team. He should have been starting in the first place.

If the Kidd trade pushes through, will he play for the West team? Then there will be another open spot in the East in that case, right?

The league doesn't have a rule in place for this situation yet because it hasn't happened before. I assume Kidd would be added to the Western team, which would then have 13 players. That'd free-up a roster spot in the East, which Stern would most certainly fill with a point guard, since Kidd's trade would leave Billups as the only one on the roster. Calderon is, without question, the only point guard for that spot.
