Source: Webber "Strongly Interested" in Magic If He Is Starter

November 15, 2007 - 7:07 pm

Florida Today -
The Orlando Magic could be strong contenders for the services of free agent forward Chris Webber if they can satisfy his need for playing major minutes. This is according to a source close to the talks.

"The source said interest from other teams in Webber has been strong. He added that, contrary to published reports, Webber would consider playing for teams other than the Detroit Pistons . The Magic are high on that list, the source said."

"He's turned down offers from five teams already," said the source, who asked to remain anonymous. "He's just waiting for the right opportunity to come along, but he would definitely consider playing for the Magic."

Orlando has a $2.6 million Disabled Player Exception that they got for Tony Battie, who is out for the reason with a torn rotator cuff. The exception has to be used by December 10.

While there is interest from both sides, a question of whether he would fit in with Orlando's uptempo style would be a big question.

I'm not huge on Webber, but he could fit in decently here. I don't know about starting though....it could get Hedo to the bench (where I think he belongs), but he might not take too kind to that considering his play as of late. It will be interesting to see if anything comes of this.

If he would accept the 2.6 million exception then i dont see why not except... should we fix something that isnt broken? We need another big man, but he needs major minutes... So someone has to go to the bench then. I guess it would be Bogans, but hes been awesome so far this season, or hedo. But Bogans has been amazing on defense. But then we would be able to move Hedo and Lewis back to the 2 and 3. But i guess we would drop out Hedo, because he still produced well off the bench in the past.

I like this move if we can sign him for that injury exception. Our lineup would be:

PG: Jameer
SG: Bogans
SF: Lewis
PF: Webber
C: Howard

6th: Turk

I know we are winning, but I am wondering how long we can keep it up with Lewis being thrown against PF's. He has struggled playing against team with decent PF's so this could actually be a good move to have him back at his original SF position.

Besides, if Battie was healthy Lewis would have been SF anyway.

Ya, I wasn't a fan of the idea a few years back, or ever a fan of webber in my life. Over the past few years the Magic were missing alot of pieces. Now that they have found some of these pieces, I think Webber maybe just what they are still missing. He will draw guys away from howard, and is an exceptional passing big man. To simply put it, he will complement howard almost perfectly. He does the things howard doesn't, and that is what orlando is looking for.

Bring him in.

Definitely sign him. I don't know if we should start him right away. But he would definitely get a lot of minutes. It would send a bad signal to the rest of the players to have Webber start right away. He brings us some offense to our second unit and some rebounding. I think he should start over time, so Lewis can play his natural position and not have to guard power forwards on defense. By moving Turk to the bench, I think we would be much more successful. He would be playing against other teams' bench players and Turk can be a starter for almost any team.

I agree with that completely, I only worry about chemistry and whatnot. If there would be no locker room problems/jealousy, then I think he's a no brainier to sign.

I like the idea of moving Turk to the bench (we need a sixth man) but I'm not sure if Webber is the right guy. He isn't much of a rebounder anymore. That said, he's better than Abdur-Rahim because he does the same things and would only be here for one season as opposed to three.

I'm still a fan of bringing in Dale Davis, but I know I'm in the minority there.

That would be weird if we signed him. He would be back on the team that originally drafted him.

I used to say sign him, but I'm not so sure now given his current demands.

What if it doesn't work out, and him playing major minutes is actually detrimental to the team? Then what? We've got a disgruntled, visible vet who would be affecting team chemistry and causing a riff in the locker room if we limited his playing time.

Basically, he only wants to play if he can get major minutes. And if he isn't working well in our system, then we've got a problem on our hands. I just don't know if he is worth the risk right now. Remember how he didn't want to play for us earlier, before the season? Now we've gotten off to a fast start and all of a sudden he's like "yeah I'll play for them if they meet my demands".

Still, I'm not completely against the idea. I just have some worries about it.

Your definitley right about that. We are playing so well, and the only reason we would add a big is because of the injury exception that expired December 10. So even if he ended up causing problems we could just cut him and not really lose much, we would just be back with the team that got us to 7-2. I think hes worth the risk if Otis and SVG think he can get back to his form of 2 seasons ago.

We are playing well RIGHT NOW. But we still need to address our need for a 4. Lewis shouldn't be playing the 4 every night. He is really a 3. I really don't expect to win 7 out of every 9 games. At some point, we need to get another big and I think Webber would be a good fit.

If we can sign Webber, then have the choice of releasing him before the year is over if he isn't working out, then yes, I'd say sign him.

I say don't sign this a**hole. developed augustine and gortat. this guy is cancer waiting to explode. the only reason he interesting the magic is because we got more money. this guy is past his prime. If he was good Detriot would have sign him in training camp.
