Nelson and the Magic have to reach an agreement before Wednesday or he will play out this season under his rookie contract and then become a restricted free agent next summer.

Nelson was hoping for a deal similar to the five-year, $42 million contract extension that Dallas gave point guard Devin Harris. He responded sharply to the Magic’s claims that Nelson doesn’t compare favorably to Harris.

"I think I’m a better player and I mean more to my team,’’ Nelson said when comparing himself to Harris. "My numbers are better. He’s bigger, but he’s not a legit 6-3. I’m a legit 6-1.’’

Nelson said he’s tried to prepare himself mentally for a scenario in which he and the Magic don’t reach a deal. He said he would have no problem signing with another team next summer if a contract can’t be agreed upon by Wednesday or even next summer.

"I’m prepared to leave. I’m prepared to go outside of my comfort zone,’’ he said boldly. "I can name all of the teams who have (salary cap) money. Philly and Atlanta and others, they have money to spend.

"I’m a starting point guard. I need starting point guard money.’’

Wow. Strong words by Jameer. Saying he is prepared to leave is probably just a tactic to get more money from Otis.

The article also says the Magic offered Jameer 30 mil over the next 5 seasons and hes deciding whether or not to accept. He wanted 45 mil over the next 5.

"I’m a legit 6-1." ?? Hes not even 6-1

The Magic can match any offer, however, but would gamble on Nelson increasing his value with a good season.

Those close to the situation told the Sentinel that a short-term deal has been discussed. If the parties decide on that, Nelson perhaps would sign for $21 million to $24-million over three seasons.

The Magic are believed to be somewhere in the $30-million range, and it is clear they'd like to see if he can continue his stellar preseason play and adapt to new coach Stan Van Gundy's system.

Like I wrote earlier today, the offer confuses me. The money indicates the Magic aren't sold on Nelson's abilities, yet the length indicates that they are. It's contradictory.

I like Jameer and I hope he accepts the offer. He's a team leader and a good young talent and I'd hate for him to leave. I just wish the team made him an offer with fewer years and a higher average salary.

Jameer is 5'11" in shoes (6-foot if he wears more extra foot padding).

Players usually play through the roof in contract years. While it would be reassuring to lock him up, if we fail to meet his demands at least we will have a guard playing with the fire of money signs in his eyes for a season.

If the Magic and Nelson cannot reach an agreement on an extension by Wednesday -- the opening night of the season -- he would become a restricted free agent this summer.

They have shown in their dealings with DeShawn Stevenson and Darko Milicic -- both of whom became restricted -- that they are willing to gamble on a player increasing his value and heading into the open market.

"He's bigger [6-3], but he's not a legit 6-3. I'm a legit 6-1." The 5-10 Nelson laughed, although some in his camp believe his lack of height is a factor in the Magic not wholly committing to him.

I say wait it out. I'm not completely sold on Nelson as our starting PG of the future.

Either way, if we keep him for a few more seasons or let him go. I think the 1st player drafted or signed should be a PG. There are just too many question marks with that spot, and thats the most important spot that you must be sure about.
