The Timberwolves negotiated on Saturday to buy out the contract of veteran forward Juwan Howard, a move that once finalized will get them to their 15-player roster limit by Monday's 5 p.m. deadline.

The Wolves also are expected to release Wayne Simien -- acquired with Antoine Walker and Michael Doleac in Wednesday's trade with Miami -- by Monday. Simien is the only one of those three players who was told not to report to the team.

"We've finally gotten down to a number," said Wolves coach Randy Wittman, who added that another roster move always could happen but that he doesn't expect one. "We can move forward now."

Howard hugged teammates goodbye after Friday's exhibition finale at Target Center and did not attend the Wolves' public scrimmage there on Saturday evening.

Considering how thin we are up front, should the Magic be interested in Howard? I know he didn't work out so well last time he was here, but it was because of different reasons (logjam with Gooden).

I never expected to actually want Howard back, but with our current situation, I think the Magic should go for it.

I dont think so. We need a more physical backup off the bench, Juwan is too soft and not that good now anyways.

I'd rather have him than Augustine. I'm a true believer in getting one more big man. We are just way too thin in the front court.

Juwan actually is not too bad an option considering what is left out there. He is a veteran, can hit his outside jumpers from about 15 ft. I think we should at least take a look at him. He is essentially a softer more offensive type of player compared to Battie. He can add to our depth down low.

We should make him a reasonable offer, if for nothing else than to keep him away from the Heat. They need to stay thin in the frontcourt.

i agree, i think auggie is a bum personally who is only on the team because of battie's injury, seriously i would rather have garrity backing up the bigs b4 auggie, not to mention garrity outweighs him by 6 lbs despite being 6'8"

I say sign Juwan Howard. Now sure our memories of him here are bad, but he would come here now with a much different role and at a much lower price. Plus, he can sort of resurrect his career like Foyle seems to be doing.

Why would we have bad memories from when Juwan was here? He was a pro, rebounded, scored 17 ppg. He didnt do anything wrong. Just played.

for the amount of money we'll have, and for what we need him for, I think we should sign the guy. He put up 9 ppg 5rpg for houston as a third scoring option behind Tmac and yao, and has shot better than 80% from the line. I think it would be a great pick up. and where do you guys get this notion that he's soft? He has a post game and a mid range game, and is a good rebounder.

Wont happen anyway. The Cavs are most likely going to make a move, and if they do, it has to be done by 6 pm today.

The Plain Dealer -
Juwan Howard accepted a buyout from the Minnesota Timberwolves last weekend, which could lead to Howard joining the Cavaliers prior to Wednesday's season opener against the Dallas Mavericks .

The opening day roster of 15 players must be set by 6 p.m. today.

Howard, according to league sources, spoke with the Cavs over the weekend about joining the club. Howard is also considering Dallas and Boston.

So this is also news for the Magic who have to cut one player to reach the 15 allowed on the opening day roster.

I don't think the Magic have to cut anybody. They dumped Kruger over the weekend, which leaves them with 15 guys:

  • Ariza
  • Arroyo
  • Augustine
  • Battie
  • Bogans
  • Dooling
  • Foyle
  • Garrity
  • Gortat
  • Howard
  • Lewis
  • Nelson
  • Outlaw
  • Redick
  • Turkoglu

John Denton was saying they'd cut Augustine or Outlaw to get the roster to 14, but that's not totally necessary. Point being, we're already at 15.

But yes, if we want Juwan Howard or Chris Webber or P.J. Brown, somebody has to go.

Oh ok, i kept thinking we had to cut one more. Well maybe it was because Otis publicly stated that he wanted to have 14 instead of 15 guys on the roster for flexibility. So maybe Outlaw will go and we might sign or trade for another big??

The Minnesota Timberwolves [bought out] forward Juwan Howard's contract -- and that could pave the way for him to return to the Magic.

The Magic, in need of another big ... didn't want to trade for Howard and take on the last two years of his salary (at $6.8 million and $7.3 million).

The Magic could offer him the $1.2 veteran's minimum.
