The Lakers are asking for a package built around Luol Deng, Ben Gordon, Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah, which is more than Chicago is willing to surrender. Also, Bryant would not want to play in Chicago if the Bulls surrendered all four of those players, believing there would not be enough talent left to compete for a championship, and he would veto that trade even if the Bulls and Lakers were both in favor of it.

Further complicating matters is the division within the upper echelon of the Lakers front office, a house divided between the competing desires of owner Jerry Buss, his son, Jim, daughter Jeanie (and her boyfriend, coach Phil Jackson) and general manager Mitch Kupchak. According to sources, one faction seems more determined than ever to part with Bryant, while others still are hanging onto the belief that Bryant can still be persuaded to stay in Los Angeles.

A source told ESPN.com that the likelihood of a Bryant trade before opening night seemed higher a few days ago than it does now, and a deal going down sometime before the end of November now seemed more likely.

Kobe for Arenas?

Chicago Tribune -
One general manager on the periphery of the Kobe Bryant talks says he believes the "dark horse" to make a deal with the Lakers is the Washington Wizards . The consensus is the Wizards have hit a plateau, but have the star power in Gilbert Arenas to make a deal.

Arenas is talking about opting out of his contract after this season. He's from Los Angeles and has become a star, one of the league's highest-scoring players and an engaging personality who would embrace the Hollywood scene. He would meet the Lakers' demands for an All-Star player if they trade Bryant.

"Watch out for them," the general manager said, meaning the Wizards.

I could see the Wizards trying to do something if they feel they can't resign Gilbert. But the Bulls are complete morons if they trade those 4 players for Bryant. They still might get Kobe, but there is no way they trade those 4. Maybe 2 of them and some picks or something like that.

Bulls won't trade that and Lakers don't expect them to. Lakers are just establishing a really high asking price so when they meet in the middle it is better for them.

As for the Wizards, no way would that happen and it's purely a "what if?" scenario. Wiz are really happy they have a far more marketable face (these days) in Arenas, and trading him for a malcontent just makes no sense.

And not being able to resign him next year and get nothing in return makes no sense either. If they are confident he'll resign, then I doubt they try and trade for Kobe, but if not, they've got to try.

Paxson: Kobe Deal Won't Get Done

Quote:

Chicago general manager John Paxson put an end to more than a week of feverish speculation, declaring, "There's not a deal to be done" in the Kobe Bryant sweepstakes following Thursday's practice.

"It's time to put it to rest," Paxson said.

Paxson acknowledged having several conversations with the Lakers regarding Bryant but refused to divulge specifics. It's known that the Bulls engaged in multiple talks trying to engineer three-team trades, but nothing ever got close, Paxson said.

Paxson refused to say his team was distracted by the daily rumors regarding the incident, saying merely that the Bulls "played poorly" in Wednesday's season-opening loss the Nets.

The Bulls would be the place that would make the most sense, but I doubt he gets moved now.
