Nelson's side would prefer a contract similar to the five-year, $42 million contract that Devin Harris got this summer from the Dallas Mavericks.

Smith said there's no reason for him to meet such a demand because few teams will have that much salary cap space next summer.

Interesting. Smith wants to take a gamble; we'll see if it pays off.

I think they will eventually come to a compromise. But, its smart for Otis not to back down, thats alot of money for a guy who hasnt proven himself yet.

I agree. Nelson is a good young player, but he's got a lot to prove before I consider him the future PG of the Magic. He's on the right track, but for the type of money his agent wants, Otis needs to be pretty darn sure that Nelson is the right man for the job now and in the foreseeable future.

Sucks that there's an October 31 deadline. He's looked great in the preseason, but I'd like to see what he does in the regular season before giving him an $8 million annual paycheck. Hrm.

I beg to differ, He looks like the same inconsistant Jameer thus far. But it is only Pre-Season. I'm going to have to wait until the season starts.

I liked what I saw out of him today. He probably would have had a double-double (points/assists) if Keith Bogans and J.J. Redick weren't so jetlagged/crappy. Stan Van Gundy is working wonders for him.

I agree with Otis. Jameer has looked good so far but let's see if he can keep doing it during the regular season.

One thing to consider is that he could command a big salary if he has a big season, and the Magic will need to use some of their money next summer to lock-up Ariza long-term.

I think $42 is already too much. Besides as Otis pointed out, there are few teams that can meet that demand.

Have You Hugged Your Van Gundy Today?

Hopefully Nelson doesn't take it personally and sign elsewhere like Darko (unlikely).

I loved what I saw out of Nelson today, and am warming to the idea of resigning him. Still, I think his demand could be lessened a bit and the they meet in the middle.
