Even though Nelson was the returning starter, Van Gundy had opened competition for the point-guard spot in training camp.

Van Gundy left Saturday with his team for China, knowing that Nelson had proven he was the man for the job.

Carlos Arroyo will back up Nelson -- just like he did last season.

But Nelson has been determined that the end results this season will be different.

COMMENT FROM "MITCHELL UK".........................................................................
Firstly, what the hell is Schmitz talking about? Nelson's averages through 3 games - 6.7apg, 1topg. Seriously, where hell did the 15.5apg and 2.3topg averages come from? He hasn't even had 15 assists, or more than 2 turnovers, in ANY of the three games, so it is IMPOSSIBLE that he could have averaged them. A child could have worked that out.

Also, assuming the Sentinel is correct on their report, why exactly has a decision been made on the starting pg position already? A few things to consider -

1) Nelson has played 62 minutes total this pre-season, Arroyo 77. Keyon Dooling has yet to step on the floor. I know Van Gundy also has the benefit of witnessing practices, but limited minutes in 3 pre-season games is hardly a good yardstick for decision. A decision has to be made, yes, but why not wait until all 7 pre-season games are over, and all the combinations have been tried? For all we know, Nelson and Arroyo may work well together in a small ball line-up - I certainly remember them doing well together during the last few games of the 05-06 season.

2) Last season, Nelson and Arroyo were both woefully inconsistent. So there is no guarantee that Nelson's new found focus on distributing is going to carry on. And averaging 6.7 from efforts of 6, 12, and 2 suggests that there is going to be no guarantee of what level of production you are going to get each night. Similarly Arroyo is averaging 3.7 with a 4, 0 and 7. If these guys are going to follow big nights with near anonymous ones, how is the team going to find any kind of rhythm? I would rather have a guy who would definitely bring between 5 and 8 assists every night, than a guy spread between 2 and 12. At least you know where you stand.

Now following my own point, I have to admit it is only pre-season, so varied production will occur. But I don't see how 3 games of 20ish minutes can provide an answer to the Magic's PG questions, when 82 games last year left no-one any the wiser. Hopefully, the starters could all end up being irrelevant, anyway - van Gundy seems like the sort of guy who will give minutes to the guys who play well, so we could (for example) see Nelson start a game, but Dooling or Arroyo play the bulk of the minutes based on matchups

^^^We know Jameer has a more polished offensive game. Plus he's a better outside shooter than Carlos, and with SVG's "spread the floor with three point threats" offense in effect. It makes sense to start Jameer. I agree however that jameer hasn't proven that he's a better PG than Carlos. Just a better scorer.

The ability to run the team worries me too. From going to both games I noticed that Jameer still tries to score first before he decides to pass. Or pass when his attempt to score is stopped by the defense. Carlos isn't doing much better overall. But he is making better decisions when he starts the break than Jameer you can tell the difference in they're styles of play.

I think overall Jameer should start because if we keep playing like we are (more than one person scoring) Jameer's lack of PG skills can be overshadowed by his ability to put the ball in the hoop. The only issue I have with that is actually consistantly scoring all year. In other words, if your not going to be a PG at least score for us. That goes for both our PG's

I was also wondering where in the world Brian Schmitz came up with those phantom numbers. That is just weird. Schmitz isn't the best columnist ever, but I think he should be enough of a professional to put real numbers in his articles.

15.5 is half of 31, which is how many assists Arroyo and Nelson have combined for, but even that's in three games. I have no idea where Schmitz is getting that.

Jameer would have to implode the rest of the preseason to lose his starting spot.
Carlos has done pretty decent overall, but he needs to keep an eye on a hungry Keyon.

Oh please this guy doesnt know what hes talking about. He had 2 assists last game because he didnt start and he came off the bench. Hes the normal starter and SVG put Arroyo in the SL for one game to see how he does. So you cant count Nelsons stats when he didnt start or get the regular minutes last game but the other two he did. Hes the better choice to start anyway, there doesnt need to be a huge arguement.

I doubt Nelson's spot was really ever in jeopardy. No one was expecting Arroyo to start this year.

(Though obviously some were hoping...)
