Orlando Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy said three starting jobs are up for grabs, leaving two 2006-07 incumbents -- point guard Jameer Nelson and small forward Hedo Turkoglu -- fighting for spots.

Van Gundy said Dwight Howard will start at center, and Rashard Lewis will start at one of the forward spots.

While Turkgolu figures to get the forward spot opposite Lewis, the most surprising development is that Nelson apparently needs to beat out Carlos Arroyo and Keyon Dooling. Nelson is counting on playing a lot of minutes in this, his contract season.

Lineup tinkering

Van Gundy said he will experiment with different lineups during the preseason, which begins Monday against the Atlanta Hawks at Amway Arena.

"Next week . . . I'm trying to put together five or six lineups we want to look at. . . ," he said. "Who do we want to see play together?"

"We're trying to move guys around," Van Gundy said.

Well done, SVG. :)
Jameer says he wants $42 million, make him earn it.

As far as the 'other' forward spot. Hedo may not be a lock if our big men show great strides.

Ok, I hate to sound negative about this, but it can't be too good that we still have 3 open starting spots to fill. I have a feeling we're going to be struggling out of the gate as Van Gundy tries to figure out a winning lineup.

On the other hand, I think SVG might be trying to motivate some of his players to play harder and not just expect starting jobs to be handed to them. Because honestly, I don't see Dooling or Arroyo (please no) starting ahead of Nelson at the PG spot, for example.

I think it's more of a motivational tool, myself. I can't imagine Jameer coming off the bench, even though that might actually suit him better.

I saw this so called "Motivational Tool" with Hill. At least thats what some called it. Like it or not, Maybe it could be that Jameer isn't playing up to his potential. It seems like his starting role has been in danger for a couple of years. Doesn't that seem odd that it's happening again with a different coach.

I guess it makes people feel better to call it a "motivational tool" instead of Jameer isnt as good as some people think. I love it!!

Keep "motivating" Jameer SVG!!!

I think it's more motivation for Carlos than it is for Jameer. Carlos really fell out of favor with Hill last season, so maybe Van Gundy is trying to boost his confidence and assure him that he has a chance to carve out an important role.

Those are good points to consider. I'm sure SVG is trying to motivate the non-starters as well as the likely starters.

Very good point Ben Q. I think that Carlos, as much as anyone, needs to feel like he can step in and be the leader if the Magic decide that Jameer isn't the answer. Finding out earlier rather than later is a smart move.
