Have You Hugged Your Van Gundy Today?

SVG commenting on Ariza's rebounding makes me even more hopeful he will win the SG spot. It would really help to have a guard who can play like a forward out there.

ESPN has us 6 in the east in that power ranking. We're actually getting some love!

DAY-5 "Fatigue becoming a factor"
Keyon Injured [/b]
Keyon Dooling did not participate in Wednesday's scrimmage due to a groin injury. Dooling is expected to miss 4-5 days. He has been dealing with the injury for most of camp and has decided to give it some rest. Dooling has been playing significant time at the point guard position but will be used at shooting guard as well.

Doubling Dwight
After leading the league in turnovers last season, another emphasis on Dwight Howard's game will be his decision making out of the double team. Coach Van Gundy said that in their scrimmage there was a two minute span where they double teamed Dwight every time down the floor and he made three great passes.

Bogans Balling
According to Van Gundy, Keith Bogans has been absolutely lights out. Bogans has been the best shooter from the perimeter at camp thus far shooting a ridiculous 57 percent from beyond the arch. The double teams drawn by Dwight and Rashard has provided many open looks for Bogans mainly from the corners. Similar to that of Bruce Bowen with the San Antonio Spurs. Much like Bowen, Bogans is a solid perimeter defender which benefits him as he fights for the starting shooting guard position.

It's great that they are doubling Dwight and getting him the feel of the type of defense he will be facing game in and game out.

Nice to see Bogans giving everyone a run for their money on the SG battle.

Howard's working on passing game

"His passing has been one of the most impressive things I've seen from him [in camp], getting the ball out to other people," Coach Stan Van Gundy said. "He really has focused on that, getting better in that area. He understands the necessity of improving there. In one two-minute span [during a scrimmage], I saw three good passes from him."

Scrimmage features fast pace, plenty 3s

With C Dwight Howard leading one team and F Rashard Lewis the other, the Orlando Magic pushed the ball, got into their offense fast and fired up 3-pointers in an entertaining 36-minute split-squad scrimmage Friday at RDV Sportsplex. Howard's squad defeated Lewis' team 76-70 as Coach Stan Van Gundy gave the media a glimpse at what his up-tempo team will look like this season.

The White team was made up of Lewis, Trevor Ariza, J.J. Redick, Carlos Arroyo, Adonal Foyle, James Augustine and Marcin Gortat. Howard, Jameer Nelson, Hedo Turkoglu, Keith Bogans, Pat Garrity, Bo Outlaw, Torrell Martin and Kevin Kruger comprised the Black team.

Howard, who has been working on his shooting, nailed a 17-foot jump shot and hit four consecutive free throws. Hoping Van Gundy's style will gain him playing time, Garrity also rained in 3-pointers.

Ariza key to Magic's success

It's hard to tell exactly where Trevor Ariza will fit -- or what role he will fill -- with this new-look Orlando Magic. But don't question his importance to winning. The Magic won't make that mistake twice.

After playing a key role in the early success of the Magic last season, he mostly watched the playoff disaster as if he were seeing a ship sink in front of him. It was disheartening.

The Magic last season were eight games above .500 when Ariza left the rotation with a badly sprained right knee Jan. 10. When he returned Feb. 25, they were three games under .500. They lost 15 of the 20 games he missed. It's tough not to notice the difference.

"Trevor is going to play," said first-year Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy. "He does things that we don't have anywhere else. He's unique on this team. He's a runner, a cutter, more than anyone else we have."

Wow! PAT is still alive!

They better use Trevor. Brian Hill made a mistake last playoffs, I know Stan Van Gundy won't make the same mistake. And Otis will be there to remind him if he does.
