The battle for shooting guard should also be interesting. J.J.Redick, Keith Bogans, Torrell Martin and Trevor Ariza are the teams guards (Keyon Dooling is still a possiblilty).

The assumption is Redick will get the starting nod, but Keith Bogans might have something to say about that. A close team source mentioned that Bogans routinely killed Redick during practice last season.

So we see the tough time Redick is having and its not any easier now with the broken hand. How much could he have really improved this offseason is what im wondering.

I think Bogans should start until Redick gets some consistent productive minutes. Bogans is a good defender and better at penetrating and can hit some 3's. Even if he's not as good as Redick hitting the 3's. Just bring Redick of the bench, no need for 3's when Rashard and Bogans are in there.

Maybe Bogans should start. I mean, if Keith Bogans is making J.J. look bad on defense, then how will the Hamiltons and Wades and Allens of the East make him look? Yikes.

Have You Hugged Your Van Gundy Today?

I still think Ariza should end up starting so long as his shot has been improved (he maintains it's what he's been working on every day this offseason). Stan Van Gundy's preseason quotes have all revolved around defense, so it will be surprising if he goes with Redick to start out with considering how he did last year.

Yes when you say either of The Van Gundy Brother Name the first think to your mind is "D" and that is what Keith Bogans brings to the Orlando Magic.Remeber that SG Starting problem in the first part or middle of 2000 between Bogans vs. DeShahun Stevenson.Look who won that Battle :) Sometime Orlando should think about because if Bogans leaves Orlando again he may not come back.

Honestly, I'm not too impressed when the guys vying for our starting SG spot would all probably be coming off the bench for better teams in the league.

However, right now I would go with Bogans.

But how hard is it to make JJ look bad on defense? The guy tries really hard to play d he's just not good at it. I still don't know why Turks name isnt in there unless he's strictly going to back up Lewis,. It would be a mistake not to start him along side Lewis.

Whomever is doing best at the position after camp should get the nod. Whatever happened last year is irrelevant. Just win, baby!

From all accounts, Rashard Lewis wowed teammates during a scrimmage in the first day of training camp, and J.J. Redick started with the first group and hit some jumpers.

"I was more impressed with Rashard's defense," General Manager Otis Smith said. "I know what he can do on offense."

Lewis, the Magic's $118 free-agent find, nailed shots all over the floor and posted up.

Redick, who received little run last season as a prize rookie out of Duke, played down his playing with the first group. "I'd just love to be in the rotation," he said.

New Coach Stan Van Gundy was animated throughout the morning practice at RDV, yelling, cajoling and stopping the work to instruct.

At one point, Van Gundy halted sloppy play and said, "Does anybody know where we ranked in turnovers last season? 25th? 27th? Let's go!"

Forward Hedo Turkoglu sustained a bruised wrist but was fine.

Looks like they are considering JJ at this early point.

Bogans didn't get much PT under Hill. I have however seen what he can do given significant minutes with the Bobcats. He's a good SG and we need to use him.

I don't want you guys to think that I hate JJ, He impressed me with his defensive efforts, and proved me wrong. I just think he needs to be consistant at something and contribute and that would be hitting those three's.

ORLANDO –- Magic guard Keith Bogans says that a disappointing year last season drove him to work harder than he ever has this past summer.

Bogans stayed in Orlando all summer and said he worked out several times a week with the Magic coaching staff. He dropped 15 pounds, slimming down to 200 pounds. He also worked tirelessly on his outside shooting, working to make himself more of a weapon from the 3-point line.

Van Gundy said Bogans has made 57 percent of his 3-pointers in the intrasquad scrimmages.

"Keith Bogans has been absolutely lighting it up out here,’’ Van Gundy said. "He’s been the best shooter out here right now.’’

Bogans solid play has come at a time when Keyon Dooling, one of the other candidates to start at shooting guard, is out with a mysterious injury. Dooling is having problems with a hip and that in turn is causing pain in his groin. Van Gundy said Dooling likely won’t practice the rest of the week.

Rocks blocking shots on guys with dreadlocks
hopefully bogans improved shooting will translate into the real games considering he has a good chance of being our starting SG, i like him because of his defensive presence and size and I know the stats say he was a decent 3 pt shooter last year but i cant count how many times last year when he started for us he would miss WIDE OPEN 3's when dwight got doubled like it was nobody's business

As much as I like seeing JJ on the starting lineup, it appears that Bogans is outworking him. Bogans is also better defensively. If both of them keep up this pace, we will have a solid SG rotation.

Again, it remains to be seen if that translates into real games as icevein333 mentioned.
