Orlando Sentinel -
Jameer Nelson is at a critical juncture as a player, angling for a new contract with the Magic after turning in a so-so 2006-07 season.

Nelson can become a restricted free agent after season's end if an extension isn't reached by the Oct. 31 deadline. GM Otis Smith doesn't rule out getting a contract done by then. Mountain would be in favor of striking a deal sooner than later, but for now says, "Just say it isn't soup yet."

Nelson shrugs off the contract talk other than to say, "Of course, I want to stay here, but I know it's a business." He prefers to focus on his team -- and the memory of a father whom he says will be a driving force behind a breakout season for him.

i'm a fan of Nelson as a person. i think he's a stand up, class act guy. as a player he ticks me off sometimes. he's streaky. if he get 10 plus points a game i'm ok with him. i say sign him. give the kid a chance. he has alot of potential still. remember he's only 3 seasons in.

I think Jameer deserves a shot to stay with the team. I like him; he's easy to root for. I'd like to see him score 15 points, hand out 8 assists, and shoot 40% from downtown. I can live with his poor defense if it means he's getting his team going offensively.

I would be all for locking up Nelson long term. I am a big Nelson fan. He has come up with some big shots over the last couple seasons.

I'd prefer to wait a bit on extending him unless his demands are on the lower side. He had a bad year last year and we still have yet to see if he will fit into a run and gun style that we want to draw up. I think the negotiations will probably go into the beginning of the season as a result.

I like Nelson, but with the fast pace offense that they want to run I see a lot of turnovers in his future.

I'm with some of you guys, lets take a wait-and-see approach.

I think Nelson will thrive better in this offense, but I'm not sold on him long-term yet.

I would have to agree with most of your comments. He's extremely likable and I'm sure everyone would like to see him have a "breakout season" in light of what has transpired with his father. Hopefully he does well and we'll have no choice but to sign him for the long haul.

I'm with the majority here. I don't think we should be in a rush to sign Jameer. Let's see what he can do this season and then decide how much he is worth.
