Orlando Magic shooting guard J.J. Redick has a broken bone in his right hand, but the club expects him to be ready when it begins training camp Sept. 29.

Magic General Manager Otis Smith said Friday he did not know when Redick injured his hand but the 6-foot-5 former Duke All-American has been wearing a soft cast for the last week.

"We're not sure when it happened," Smith said. "It could have happened when he was working out, playing pickup or when he was playing with USA Basketball.

"I don't expect J.J. to miss any time at all. I'd be surprised if he's not ready for camp."

Smith said Redick did not require surgery.

Redick, 23, averaged 6 points in 42 games as a rookie last season. Last summer, he was plagued by a back injury that hampered his preparation for the season. With the loss of Grant Hill to the Phoenix Suns via free agency, Redick is one of the candidate to start at shooting guard. He led the Magic's summer league team in scoring in July.

Luckily it doesn't sound too serious if he's going to be back in two weeks. I just hope SVG forces him to take it easy for a little while to make sure Redick doesn't have lingering problems as the preseason gets under way.

I'd think, if anything, this kind of forces SVG to look at making the 2 more of a defensive player. I think it will be Dooling or Ariza at the 2 to start the season, and then Redick, if fully healed, will take over at the midseason.

Again? ...

The article makes it seem like Redick breaking his hand is no big deal. But of course it will set him back because he cant do his normal daily routine/practice. I didnt expect him to have any huge impact yet anyways.

If Dooling or Ariza start Redick isnt just going to "Take over" He isnt that good. He's going to have to earn a starting spot. Why does everyone think this guys deserves to start? He hasnt done anything.

I concur. Nothing is given to you in the NBA. He either needs to earn a starting position or take it from someone.

Exactamente. Hes not even close to starting material. Hes got a long ways to go. There are many guys who would be starting in the 2 spot over him anyways: Turk, Ariza, Bogans, and Dooling.

JJ probably will have a Steve Kerr type role, while Bogans, Dooling, or Ariza probably will be placed in the lineup for defensive purposes.

Its not just our team. Every team goes through injuries. Great teams are teams who can get through the injuries and find a way to win anyways.

Exactly. Every team goes through injuries, but the best teams are the ones that have enough talent, experience, etc. to overcome them.
