City Council approves $1.1 billion venues plan
posted by Mark Skoneki on Jul 23, 2007 5:17:34 PM

The Orlando City Council voted 6-1 today to approve a $1.1 billion project to transform downtown Orlando with a new arena and performing arts center and a renovated Citrus Bowl.

The vote came after a briefing public hearing at City Hall that drew a standing-room-only crowd of about 200 people.

The City Council’s approval of the plan championed by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer was expected. The Orange County Commission now must vote on the proposal, and its fate there is in much greater doubt.

The county commission meets Thursday at the County Administration Building on South Rosalind Ave, with a public hearing that begins at 2 p.m. (Earlier, the meeting had been scheduled to start at 11 a.m.)

Good news for sure that they passed the venues plan. Now we have two hard votes on Wednesday and Thursday. The main concern is the amount of money the Magic will put towards the Arena. The city would love to "give" the arena to the Magic, but some are continuously against the new arena until the Magic offer more money. Alex Martins, chief operating officer, said the Magic are putting together a good showing for thursday and will most likely be adding more money if thats what it takes to get a new arena in downtown. (I saw that on Fox news yesterday if any body was wondering.)

That doesn't jive with what Black and Blue said earlier today. I'm not calling you a liar, but I'm just saying.

But Martins turned away speculation that the NBA team might increase its
contribution of $50 million in upfront cash at the last minute to win
commissioners' support. The commission is expected to take up the issue at 2 p.m.
Thursday."We feel like we've conducted negotiations in good faith. . . . To say
we fully intended to get to the eleventh hour and make an additional
contribution is not a fair statement," Martins said. "Our goal this week is to
answer all the questions that commissioners have."

I wish it were true. :(

There still is a chance the Magic will contribute more money at the last second, but Martins' words earlier did indeed hint that that would not be the case.

I just really hope this doesn't come down to our team dropping the ball. Even if they turn us down despite our best efforts it would be better than it being because of a gaffe by our execs.

Anxious Magic sweeten pot
Team agrees to fund community gyms, be eco-friendly

The Orlando Magic, increasingly anxious to win the support of more county leaders for a new home court, agreed Tuesday to help pay for five new community gymnasiums around Orange County and to build the nation's first eco-friendly NBA arena.

It wasn't clear how much either pledge would cost the team. But the concessions could be enough to woo undecided commissioners who want to vote yes on the $1.1 billion plan while also appearing to be tough taxpayer advocates.

County commissioners are expected to vote on the plan for a new arena, performing-arts center and upgraded Florida Citrus Bowl after a 2 p.m. public hearing Thursday. A news conference on the gymnasium deal could come today.

No one, including the Magic, would talk about the gym agreement publicly, but five people familiar with the proposal confirmed it.

"The details need to be worked out," Orange Commissioner Mildred Fernandez said.

As expected, the Orlando City Council on Monday approved the plan to build the venues with a mix of tourist taxes, downtown property taxes and private funds. County leaders, who control the tourist taxes that would pay for about half the plan, are less certain about the proposal.

Sounds like instead of pledging more money, they are funding gyms and pledging to make the arena eco-friendly. They're trying to appeal to the specific council members without giving too much directly to the stadium. Might be smart.

I will be doing a live online diary of the meeting at 2pm for those interested, going over the details of the proceedings:

This could be the biggest day in Orlando Magic history, for better or worse.

My uncle will be speaking today at the voting to try to convince them to vote yes for the projects. He will be representing the Hispanic community. I hope he does a good job.

Any other links for the hearing today? I just posted on B&B's blog to see if anyone not from this board might see it and know. A radio link that isn't choppy would be great, but the video on the Sentinel page is horrible.
