Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith flew to Philadelphia over the weekend to meet with Steve Mountain, agent for point guard Jameer Nelson, to spark negotiations on a possible contract extension. Smith returned without a deal or the prospect of one anytime soon.

If an extension isn't signed by Oct. 31, Nelson will play next season as a restricted free agent.

I agree with efenell. I don't think we should be in a hurry to sign an extension for Jameer after last season's performance. We should go the Darko-path on this one.

Otis should not be blinded by his infatuation with Nelson.

I think the only reason you attempt to sign him this summer is that you can get him cheap since his stock is low right now.

I say if you cant get him cheap then just let his contract wait. We did the same thing with Darko and I am glad to say we didn't cave to his demands.

otis is scared from the darko situation so he probably wants to lock up nelson now even though we should make him prove himself this season

Otis needs to wait. Hopefully Jameer's game will elevate under VanGundy.

I think Otis is afraid that Nelson's game will elevate straight out of our price range.

If we can sign him now cheap I am all for doing it. I think Nelson had a down year and can flourish in the right system.

I completely agree. If Nelson doesn't get it done this year though, he's toast. But I think it's a chance we should take as long as the price is right. Maybe at worst he'll be a decent backup PG and at best he could be a great starter in the right system.

An excellent point. What is it that they teach you in economics? "Buy low, sell high." I think Otis might be trying to buy low, but I doubt he'll be looking to sell.

I predict Nelson will be gone in the 08-09 season unless he shapes up soon. And especially if he askes for alot of money, say goodbye.

I totally agree. Go ahead and sign him now for cheap if you can, because we're not going to have much money to sign players like him for awhile.
