Yeah, we would have been blasted for that. Honestly, we get blasted for everything we do, because we're the Magic. I don't think it's fair.

But if they made that trade, the Sonics would have been able to field a team of entirely small forwards: Durant, Green, Ariza, Wilkens, and Gelabale.

 I'm really surprised Seattle isn't shopping Wilkins. He's a high-energy dude, like Ariza, but he isn't going to see as much of the court with Durant and Green there. And didn't he play high school ball in Orlando?

How many of you actually have a finances invested with the Orlando Magic where as a result you are going to be out money cuz of what they are paying Rashard Lewis? On that note while you are all crying over how much we payed a person who lead a team to 50 wins not to long ago in the west, J. J. Redick has scored 30 17 and 24 in his 3 summer league games.

But no, LEts talk about the financial situation of the orlando magic and things we have ZERO control over.

Um, it doesnt affect us personally but it affects the Magic. It severely limits our ability to sign other players now or in the future. That could all be worth while if it pans out the way everyone is hoping but we never know. In the long run Lewis' huge deal could affect everybody involved including the fans, who will go crazy and call for Otis' head if it doesnt work out the way we all want.

Regarding Rashard, I'd be willing to make a charitable donation to an organization of his choosing if he agreed to shave off his facial hair for the entire 2007/2008 season, including the playoffs.

That hair on his chin needs to go. :/

Setting The Record Straight on Rashard
Let’s set the record straight on Orlando’s acquisition of Rashard Lewis, a deal which gives the Magic a true scorer and Magic opponents’ a match-up nightmare.

The only way to get Lewis was to create enough salary cap room (by renouncing players) and using it, or through a sign-and-trade in which $12 million worth of salary needed to be sent out. For the record, rebuilding Seattle didn't want the salary going out so a third team was needed to accomplish that in order to attempt to also keep Darko Milicic in the fold. Despite an agent, who will remain nameless, telling the media that 20 teams were interested in Darko, only one other team inquired about a sign-and-trade and it didn't work for Seattle.

Thus, the Magic worked out a deal with Seattle which will keep Lewis and Dwight Howard together as Magic cornerstones for the next six years. The deal also helped counter a number of teams which were after Lewis up until his name was on the dotted line (There was one report of a team having a jersey made and leaving it on his front door while he was visiting Orlando). Also of note, there are performance-based incentives built into the contract so the true value of the contract will not be known until it is complete.

Although Glass Half Full doesn’t make it a practice to respond to critics, there were some against the deal because of the price tag. The bottom line is that if you want Denzel Washington in your movie, you have to pay the price.

The Magic’s commitment to Lewis, and subsequent five-year extension to Dwight Howard, also shows the fans that the team’s ownership is undeniably committed to winning. The Magic now have a young, energetic, flexible, inside-outside attack which is as head coach Stan Van Gundy calls, a “tried and true” method toward a championship.

GHF can only hear the critics if Lewis, the most desirable free agent this year, got away. The big question then would have been: Why didn’t the team do everything and anything necessary to get him?

That's absolutely right. It's a lose-lose situation for the Magic as far as criticism is concerned.

ORLANDO--When the Orlando Magic signed Rashard Lewis to a six-year, $118 million contract, many around the league felt they had lost their minds. But GM Otis Smith was quick to point out that Lewis is a quick, rangy scorer that will take pressure off Dwight Howard, and more importantly, his huge contract will provide much needed cap relief when it comes off the books in 2012.

“$23,790,000. How’s that for an expiring contract?” Smith smugly asked reporters yesterday. “That’s what we’re looking at in 2012. We’ll be able to do all kinds of stuff with that money. We’ll be able to sign one, maybe even two, high quality free agents. Hell, by then even Greg Oden might be available. Can you picture a front court of Greg Oden and Dwight Howard? Twin Towers, baby! Now who's laughing?”

The contract could also be used as a valuable trading chip, Smith noted.

Great post MME. I am with that article that we could not under any circumstances let Rashard sign elsewhere.
